Imports (Was: {brace yourselves} the import is coming {Spoiler Alert: Not all of it} [i.e. blakeyrat was not utterly wrong for the first time ever] Filed under: append-only titles.)

is the parser doing? I mean Discourse this time:
[test]: see raw
[test]: see raw
-
test: see raw
It probably treats the line as a link definition.
-
test: see raw
Damn it!
It probably treats the line as a link definition.
Only the first word, actually. And only if there's a newline before it. And... DiscoDownBBHTLMark!

CS liked it some

Enough joking about this, some straight-talk:
So are we just keeping emails (and thus new registrations) turned off forever while we're in the middle of this ongoing disaster?
Who's doing the decision-making here? Because this is stupid as shit.
Even if it does work (and it sounds like it's even more fucked-up than normal Discourse-related technical operations), we're going to end up in a nightmare world where it's impossible to search for anything... not only is the Google ranking from the old site (which is excellent) going to go to shit, but the new site is going to have its awful search interface crammed-full of ancient irrelevant results.
Meanwhile, the forum is effectively "closed" for weeks while Discourse slowly chugs away at this shit.
What, again, was so objectionable about putting the existing site in read-only mode and just leaving it sit? Jesus, I'll just pay for the AWS "micro" server required to host the thing. That's like, what, $14 a month?
I'm sorry, Ben L., but this should have been kiboshed months ago.
-
Because this is stupid as shit.
As usual, you have no clue. New users are still signing up as normal. Some email is still going out. Possibly digests. Only a few people get these and they happened about 13-11 hours ago.

Just because you want to be right.
-

Is it definitely going out from this instance?
-

So Discourse is just lying to me? Because Discourse explicitly tells me it's not, even time I scroll to the top of a page.
Some email is still going out. Possibly digests.
Well what a high quality software product. Good thing we're putting all our eggs in this one basket.
Just because you want to be right.
I am right; keeping the old forum online in read-only mode was the right thing to do last July, and it's the right thing to do now.
The only thing this import is going to do is make it impossible to find any content. Google won't help us, nor will Discourse. What's the point of archived content you can't search?
The number of man-hours we've wasted on this dumb idea, if converted to dollars, could have paid for hosting the old site on AWS for like 10 years at this point.
-
Is it definitely going out from this instance?
That's based on the admin panel on this instance.
So Discourse is just lying to me?
Hard to say. What do you think it told you?

I have no idea what you're talking about.
-

So when Dischorse says all outgoing email has been disabled, it doesn't mean all outgoing mail?
-
Hard to say. What do you think it told you?
I'm not talking about what I "think" it told me, I'm talking about what it LITERALLY IS TELLING ME EVERY TIME I SCROLL TO THE TOP OF A PAGE:
I have no idea what you're talking about.
You know very well what I'm talking about, you piece of shit. Just in case you really are that stupid and not just pretending, I've pasted it above.
Look: the offer's made. If you idiots want to stop doing this stupid import and host the old forum in read-only mode on an AWS Micro instance, I'll pay the bills. EDIT: Hell I'll even do the setup and monitoring, if Alex provides me the files and does the DNS directing.
-
So when Dischorse says all outgoing email has been disabled, it doesn't mean all outgoing mail?
Hard to say. It might be that it got temporarily restored for a bit (the short windows of sending kind of support this). Or the email blocking is happening at some other level and it's not actually sending stuff it's actually sending.
-
New users are still signing up as normal. Some email is still going out.
Which kinda contradicts the Discobanner:All outgoing email has been globally disabled by an administrator
If registration confirmations and digests are going out, then it's not all e-mail, is it?
@blakeyrat said:So Discourse is just lying to me?
That does appear to be the case.
@blakeyrat said:What, again, was so objectionable about putting the existing site in read-only mode and just leaving it sit?
The square root of jack shit multiplied by fuck all.
@blakeyrat said:The only thing this import is going to do is make it impossible to find any content.
Discosearch does a good enough job of that already ;)
-
I'm not talking about what I "think" it told me, I'm talking about what it LITERALLY IS TELLING ME EVERY TIME I SCROLL TO THE TOP OF A PAGE:
The problem is that the second sentence implies something different than the first. And new users are definitely getting emails. I have no clue if that's bad copy or bad logging or someone doing other things behind the scenes or what.
You know very well what I'm talking about, you piece of shit. Just in case you really are that stupid and not just pretending, I've pasted it above.
I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, since I search and find stuff on here all the time, but now that you've confirmed the opposite, I'll agree that you're just an idiot who is incapable of searching for things.
-
Discosearch does a good enough job of that already
Right; and we're multiplying the content by 10 times. So you'll be an order of magnitude less likely to find the shit you're actually looking for. When the search success rate is already something like maybe 20%, if you're lucky.
-
It might be that it got temporarily restored for a bit (the short windows of sending kind of support this).
That would make sense.
-
I'm with @blakeyrat. And I also got an email this weekend; based on the contents I strongly suspect it's a digest from the old droplet, as it references posts that were made just before the old droplet was put in (permanent) read-only.
This import is a nightmare destined to fail eventually.

This import is a nightmare destined to fail eventually.
It's already failed at least twice.
Maybe someone could write a front page article about it?
-
A Dwarf Fortress themed front page article?
-
Put in a submission :) I'd be happy to work magic on it once it's in
-
DO NOT WANT!
Body is invalid; try to be a little more descriptive
-
Oh! Oh! Maybe Erik Gern could do one of his legendary character pieces. But with dwarves!
-

Congratulations, you have just volunteered.

-
This topic is no longer a banner. It will no longer appear at the top of every page.
-
This topic is no longer a toaster. It will no longer appear in front of the topic you are trying to read.
-
Oh thank heavens, no more sky-bronze!
-
Looks like I got the details for the banner related bugs that I've filed just in time.
-
I guess Discourse wasn't designed to handle normal use, much less a sudden large influx of 5-10 year old posts.
Not empty.
-
If you bannerfy a Lounge or Turn Left topic, who gets notified about it?
-
-
If you bannerfy two topics, do they both show up in the same screen position?
-
bugs
When we're done with this, how about we make a browser so we can go through this all over again.
-
-
-
If you bannerfy two topics, do they both show up in the same screen position?
You can't. It's a one at a time thing.
Or at least it claims to be.
-
I closed my eyes and heard the "The Star-Spangled Banner"
Damn synesthesia

The Ancient Greeks called the sky 'bronze'
They must have thought it was reflecting something, because bronze can reflect.
Otherwise, I see no reason a rational person would make something bronze and say, "That looks blue to me."
-
So, is this episode finally over with? Are we going back to business as usual?
-
-
I think it was more they didn't really describe anything as 'blue', so they never had a word for it.
-
Until the next round, presumably.
-
bronze flames?
-
didn't really describe anything as 'blue',
I can't remember them having much blue.
I mean, we say the sea is blue, but if you live inland you don't get to see it.
If you don't have just the right kind of marble or precious stone you wont' see it.
And if you don't have the right kind of flower, altogether you may never see the color blue. But, I would hardly think it was similar to the color of bronze material, so I would think, rationally, that they were describing it as reflective or some other bronze property.
Which makes sense if you see the sea, then you just say the sky is reflecting the sea, and be done with it. Especially if it's your only source of blue, and especially since it changes color during the 24h day period of time.
And the sea also changes color with the sky.
So maybe they thought the sky was reflecting the sea.
-
Maybe; no idea myself really. But I do know that the language of colour is as much cultural as it is physical, so it may well be that their concept of colour was very different to ours.

Or, maybe the sky was bronze back then?
