Well, I guess it's harder to write a goodprofitable story about a human ship that finds a planet filled with lizards banging rocks together...
The best sci-fi stories are about people who use an experimental warp engine which, when activated, allows them to exist "in every place in the universe at once", but when deactivated slowly mutates them into lizard people who then kidnap their Captain, steal a shuttlecraft, and jet off to some swamp planet where they have little lizard babies.

Not a movie/show, but Timothy Zahn's Conquerors trilogy is freaking awesome. It's about a war between humans and aliens, and as the book transitions through points of view you see both sides think they're losing, both sides think the other side is stronger, and both sides think the other side started the war.

It kind of is but then sometimes it isn't. Like the super-cheesy sci-fi show is clearly American, or basically a British person's conception of an American sci-fi series from the 1980s (probably Buck Rogers.)
Then there's the episode where their British-built ship is better-built than the alien's, so they can hide from them in a gas giant, it was played straight there, unless I missed something.
Well, yeah, because you can't have funny bits without the contrast of straight bits, as it were. That's why so many of the great comedy duos are a straight man and a funny man.

Actually, he only encountered one race that had even heard of humans before he got there. That's part of why he was able to pass as a sebacean so easily.

I liked the bit about how humans evolved-away the ability to regulate their body temperatures because the Peacekeepers spent thousands of generations on climate-controlled spaceships and there was no longer any selective pressure for it.

There aren't any aliens in Red Dwarf. All life came from Earth. GELFs etc. A lot can happen in 3 million years!

I remember no such data. It did recognize the language and adapted, but everything else indicated aliens. Not sure if it was ever confirmed. Should check the extras / commentaries.

True, but part of the backstory is that the sebaceans are descended from humans kidnapped from Earth by aliens in the distant past — it’s just that hardly anybody in the show’s universe knows this. So Farscape is both “Aliens found us” and “We find aliens” at the same time.
