Poll: targeted advertisements
-
- I prefer ads unrelated to my interests.
- I prefer ads about what I look up on the internet.
- I use adblock.
- I do not use a graphical web browser. I use a combination of cat, wget, and ssh to read my news websites.
-
I guess we'll know later on whether RMS took the Poll...
-
I assume the content of the webpage has some relevance to my interests and advertisements can be displayed based upon the page which I am currently viewing.
-
I assume the content of the webpage has some relevance to my interests
I have a very strict policy of arriving at new websites by searching Google for unique freshly-generated GUIDs only, and selecting a link from the search results according to the whims of /dev/urandom. I have absolutely no idea if any given page I am looking at is relevent to me.
Who's having the last laugh now, Big Content?
-
It's amazing how you keep arriving here then. /dev/urandom must be in the pockets of Big Discourse
-
It's amazing that I ever visit the same page twice!

I would prefer ads related to my interests if the algorithms worked properly, but:
Also, I've been followed around by the hideous blue and pink banner of Hudson Moody (estate agents) for weeks now because I'm buying a house through them and have visited their website.
This sort of thing happens all the time and will probably cause me to disable tracking eventually. In general, I like to give these things a chance, because I know that web services aren't free and people deserve a chance to recoup their costs.
-
I clicked on the "I prefer targeted adds" options.
You can either pay for things or watch adds. And since I'm not paying, I can at least get adds that appeal to me. So, why not?
-
Ugh! I prefer not targeted. I feel followed when the adds start showing me things I could need. I don't like that some algorithm can predict my behavior.
It also makes me feel icky when clicking on an add because I know that all adds later will be about it. For example, the stupid cup that knows what you're drinking. I clicked on an add for it and now every single page on the Internet is shoving it down my throat.
For reference:
-
I'm now being followed around on the internet by ads for Buildmaster
It's really disconcerting on a non-tech site..."Why are they advertising here??? Oh, yea.
Which is cool, Alex. I'm down. We're good.
-
If we're going to have ads, can we have ones that don't suck down vast amounts of CPU and network bandwidth to display? KTHXBYE.
-
i run adblock with unobtrusive ads allowed. (and have some complicated whitelist rules)
text ad in a corner of the site? whatever it doesn't distract me
a static image ad? we're cool.
a gif ad?
a video ad? BLOCKED
Flash ad? BLOCKED
ad javascript? BLOCKED
-
I do not use a graphical web browser. I use a combination of cat, wget, and ssh to read my news websites.
AFAIK
wget
doesn’t actually allow sending PUT queries, so I guess the 4 people who chose this option actually usedcurl
to do it.
-
I believe a world without ads is possible.
-
So, you like those Flash minigame ads?
-
no, but they're blocked by the same rule that blocks video ads (SWF and FLV are blocked via flashblock on all sites)
-
You know what's even better than flash ads? Those malicious ads on mobile sites that redirect you to malware/scams! Seriously I find those all the time, how do ad networks allow this kind of thing?
Also android keeps autocorrecting "ads" to "ass" so I guess it agrees.
-
Those malicious ads on mobile sites that redirect you to malware/scams!
the ones that lose the page you were on with a "Your Android device has been HAXXORED!!!!!eleven"? Any site I get that from is never getting a second visit from me
-
Or the ones that redirect you to a "Whatsapp Premium". The fuck are those annoying and no comeback either.
-
so.... that includes CNN, MSNBC, and FOXNews? (i've gotten that add from all three of them at one time or another.)
-
Fine by me. I've never seen it on BBC news
-
yet
no i'm serious. 99% of the time the sites that serve those ads don't know they are serving them. they just signed up to an ad network and dropped a bit of javascript on their site to load the ads.
the ad network will in turn sell ads to just about anyone who asks for ads.... which includes the scammers.
-

Occasionally I learn about something I wasn't aware of before.
My wife sends me a link to a dress that she likes, so I click it and then get followed around by dresses on every site that I visit for the next three weeks.
Meh...go look at something at Amazon or something and the advertisers start chasing new squirrels.
-
Something very tangentially related, but this morning Amazon sent me a personalized email offering a flight stick, which is kind of nice since I'd been looking at flight sticks in the past few days. They kind of missed the boat, though, since I had already bought a flight stick from Amazon that had already shipped out.
-
Ugh!
Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not going to post here because you already know what I think. UGHG!!@!@!@!#
-
flight stick
I fear to goole... what, pray tell, is a "flight stick"
Small deoderant that passes TSA?
-
A video game controller that mimics the flight controls on an airplane or spacecraft.

A joystick then?
Actually, that seems like it would be more dangerous to google.
So flight stick it is.
;)
-
A joystick then
usually with a separate throttle controll and more buttons than your standard joystick..... usually

No, what you really want if you're serious about it is not just a stick, but a full throttle quadrant and pedals as well -- otherwise you have nothing to map important things, like your prop or mixture controls, to; never mind trying to do a sideslip or crosswind crab without pedals.
Sidenote: the Airbus sidestick has a trigger switch on it. (It's the push-to-talk button ;) )

THIS! What makes marketoids and site owners think that clogging folks' pipes and infecting their computers is going to get them any better results than just serving up a static banner image?
(Also, RMT ads need to be covered in napalm and white phosphorous mixed together.)

I'm guessing the dynamic crap takes more effort, so it's pretty reasonable to assume they have something to back that up. I'm sure moving stuff does grab attention better. That's why I kill that stuff, personally, but most people won't / can't.
-
Amazon is incredibly aggressive with their ads. I think 50% of the ads I get are from them.
Oh man, this ad and "Slim your wallet!" ads were all I got for like a week. They were literally just selling slim wallets. And a thing that tracks what you drink? I'm sure someone out there could use that, but for $120 I think 99% of the people have no reason to even consider buying it.
-

Every person in Sales wants to slim your wallet…
-
I prefer ads about what I look up on the internet
Ads about what I look up on the internet tend to focus on things I already have, or things I looked at to consider buying and decided not to.
-

This. Sometimes it feels like they're embedding bitcoin miners in those ads.
-
who knows, they might be...
-
The good ideas thread is over there
-
-
I hate you
-

Wish I could do that, but one of them is TvTropes. They even sometimes manage to run an SMS URL, dumping you into Hangouts with a text message prepared to be sent to a premium number.
I've even had (probably) one of those hijack the DNS on either the router, or the device (methinks the router, as it started to spread on the laptop too), and serve redirects this way.
-
who knows, they might be...
The performance on those is pathetic, though. Probably won't even pay you back for the ads.
-
true.... but it is an evil thing to do.....
-
I Adblock when I can.
Ads stand out quite a bit when I'm browsing as I'll be reading an English site and a page into it a huge Japanese banner shows up.
Geo-based ads FTW, eh?For many years I couldn't even see the flash ads as I didn't have a built in player, but eventually I broke down to watch YouTube.
But yeah, back to the first sentence.
-

I would have no qualms adblocking the merry hell out of anyone or anything pulling scummy shit like that. Tvtropes need to go find better advertisers...
-

I believe "that" was referring to
never getting a second visit from me
not ad blocking.
-
My point being—if TvTropes is serving advertising malware, then blocking that malware seems fine to me. Other solutions such as never visiting TvTropes, or writing them a letter of complaint are probably fine too.
But I'd be all about blocking the malware...
-
Evil ad idea: target Blakey with nothing but malvertising. That's right, every last ad he sees is an attempt to infect his machine.
Filed under: maybe that'd make him reach for an adblocker...
-
For many years I couldn't even see the flash ads as I didn't have a built in player, but eventually I broke down to watch YouTube.
There's the like of flashblock, now even built in. And youtube works without flash now. Both of these are good things.
-
Other solutions such as never visiting TvTropes
That's a good idea anyway, assuming you want to do anything in the next 3 days.
