Control-P doing stuff other than Print
-
WHAT'S THE DEAL!?
A co-worker showed this off to me both in SublimeText and in Chrome's developer tools window. He's like, "how did you not know about control-P?" and I'm like "I do know about it, it's for printing shit."
-
But what does it do instead?!?!
-
In both it's like "goto autocompleted file". In Sublime it lists files in the open folder, or open files and in Chrome it searches downloaded JS files.
It's certainly a handy function, but WHY THE FUCK DOESN'T CONTROL-P PRINT ANYTHING!
-
Use Firefox instead?
-
Same in IntelliJ IDEA:
The first thing I did after installing it was configuring a sensible keymap so that Ctrl+O actually opens files.
-
Use Eclipse instead?
-
In Windows Media Player, Ctrl+P will play the opened movie. Co-worker thought it might send every frame of the movie to the company printer...
-
Use Eclipse instead?
QFWTF
Seriously: No. IDEA is about a zillion times better than Eclipse.
-
Eclipse opens a print dialog when you hit Ctrlp.
-
I have to admit that I like Eclipse's default keymap, though.
-
-
You mean like M-x ps-print-buffer-with-faces
?Nah. That would be too easy.
-
Use Firefox instead?
Even I am not that petty.
Since neither Sublime nor the Chrome debugger tools actually allow printing, it's not as if Control-P would be useful anyway. I'm just pointing out the stupidness of overloading people's brains with multiple functions on a single letter.
-
Remember when the letter key used in a shortcut stood for what the operation did? >.>
-
Where is the "V" in paste?
-
It's invisible, like the X in cut
-
Where is the "V" in paste?
Polyvinyl acetate. EDIT Just once I wish the built-in Markdown formatting buttons actually worked.
-
Remember when the letter key used in a shortcut stood for what the operation did?
That's what I hate most about IDEA's standard keymap. No single shortcut uses a letter key that has anything to do with the operation being performed. I spent 4 hours creating a keymap which sane people¹ could actually remember. The whole company now uses it.
¹ people who wouldn't even think about using VIM as an IDE

y = yank
p = paste
d = delete
v = visual
a = append
i = insert
:wq = write, quit

WHY THE FUCK DOESN'T CONTROL-P PRINT ANYTHING!
It's 2015 - printing is so passé. Might was well free up that shortcut.
Fun fact - I don't even have own a printer. Every couple of years, when I need to print something, I drop by staples and sprint it for ~50 cents.
-
d = designations
b = build
p = stockpiles
i = zones
l = artifacts
n = administrators
a = announcements
r = reports
; = movies
v = view unit
q = view building
t = view items in building
D = trade depot access
u = units
j = jobs

Why doesn't sublime allow printing? Even notepad allows printing and sending text to a printer seems like an expected feature of a text editor.
-
; = movies
I found some of these confusing, but this one is truly the most intuitive thing ever.

I print a lot of stuff these days. Going to print some this afternoon. It's pretty much all Cub Scouts stuff. Mostly meeting plan sort of things so I know WTF I'm doing.
-

I bought my printer circa 2002 for printing uni assignments. It still works (mostly: feeding from the tray does not but manual feed does) even if it needed some cajoling with drivers to work on latest Mac/Windows.
If I need something colour I do it at work :)

Why doesn't sublime allow printing?
Re: Printing from sublime
Postby jps on Wed Sep 23, 2009 2:11 amThis isn't supported yet, and while it's on the todo list, it's currently a low priority.

i know what you meant to type here, and i make worse spellar mistakes on a regular basis but the thought of making documents sprint at staples made me crack up something fierce!
-
Why doesn't sublime allow printing?
Why ask me? I didn't write it.
I will say in the years I've been using it, I've never missed the lack of printing.

Ah, the superior commercial software.
-
I have no idea what that is, but I want it!
-
do want one of those.....
but at 4k$ (i last looked several years ago i'd be shocked if they weren't cheaper now) is a bit steep for a keyboard

It's a failed product from 2008.

I must have been sprinting too much at work. In fact, all we do is sprint. One sprint ends, another immediately begins. Sprint sprint sprint sprint sprint.

At least you don't sprintf.

Maybe the idiot has the developer window open.
Yup.
Modal controls are beyond the idiot.
-
But yeah, the Chrome thing bothers me.

It's a nice lottery-list item, but I would guess the target market doesn't look at the keyboard while typing.
