i watch that movie for the fight scenes, not the story
Avatar has a story? I thought it was just a bunch of blue guys flying around on dragon-things, and then there's a really big battle, and then you go home (or turn the DVD/Blu-Ray player off).
-
A lot of people used that as a genuine criticism of the movie, because apparently they are retards who have never heard of the concept of "metaphor".
-
or even "suspension of disbelief"
so they chose a stupid name for a thing. whoopdie-do. it's not like you couldn't make that same argument for Tatooine or the death star (seriously, the death star? you couldn't be more original than that?)
-
seriously, the death star? you couldn't be more original than that?
More imaginative than 'The Force' ;)

unobtanium...

All this talk of unobtainium is reminding me I still haven't watched The Core...

Great connoisseurs of crappy movies... Already linked that in the Lounge
On topic: TIL another way to break lists in Discourse

who cares if it really is called that or not? i watch that movie for the fight scenes, not the story.
I only watch it for the articles.

Avatar has a story?
Sure it does. Here's the three-word summary: Dances With Smurfs.
-
Alternatively: Pocahontas in Blue.
Though I like yours better since Dances with wolves is also a Cameron flick.
-
Dances with wolves is also a Cameron flick
Why do you think I picked it?
(Well, it's more like “remembered what it was characterised as being at the time, and accurately so since I've seen both Avatar and Dances with Wolves in their original theatrical releases” but that's a bit long-winded and I perhaps should have stopped typing out stream of consciousness-like and let this sentence finish long ago.)

Ok, that smiley is really starting to creep me out.
Dunno what it is, but something in those eyes...

Besides, dickstars work better anyway. ;P
Yeah, f*ck those dickstars in their little star holes!

In context of this:
Yeah, f*ck those dickstars in their little star holes!
I am now compelled to 'fess up to my nerdiness and admit I understood the original reference. So, @tarunik, your reference was not completely lost.
Now I'm going to slink back to my corner and play quietly with my spreadsheets.

Pretty sure that for the stereotypical programmer, getting spanked would be a positive incentive.
Since they aren't getting any from the "real world"
TIL that I am not a stereotypical programmer.

TIL every year (except on leap years) the weekdays of February coincide with the weekdays of March.
This is because the 28 days of February correspond to four exact weeks.
It took me over three decades to realize this!
-
I didn't know that either.
It took me over three decades to realize this!
Not like this would have changed anything actually, so what are you freaking out about?
-
So 3 times per 28 years, except around years divisible by 100 but not by 400, we have a Friday the 13th two months in a row!

Yes, it's what made me notice it this time.what are you freaking out about?
Think of all the missed opportunities of condescendingly telling other people "what, you didn't know that?"..

Every year, the weekday of my birthday coincides with the weekday of Christmas

Not to mention, the first 28 days of November will always line up with February as well (except leap years). So when February has a Friday the 13th and the year isn't a leap year, we'll always have 3 Friday the 13ths (which is the maximum number in a single calendar year)
Or, I suppose more accurate/pedantically, the 30 days of November always line up with the first 30 days of March.

Hmm, not unlike someone here.

TIL Android's "swipe" dictionary does not include the word "suck". So you can't tell people to go duck themselves or to sick a dock.

that word is also not in the dictionary. :-P

Not surprising. The bit I'm trying to figure out is if it was an intentional joke.
Hence, frystare.
-
Obviously that's meant to be s
u
ck a d
i
ck.
You made me kill the joke, I hope you're happy.

TIL you can check if a number is prime with a regular expression, and not even a very complex one.
-
it is however one that has a very high order run time (i'm tempted to say you could probably craft an input that has an O(N!) runtime but i havent crunched the numbers to show that)
-
Took me a few tries to grok it… that's just a bit brilliant!
And I'll never have a reason to use it!
-
I wonder how the complexity compares to sieves and other standard IsPrime() type algorithms
-
well given that the sieve is hands down the best for "find all primes less than N" in terms of run time.....
probably pretty poorly
-
"Find all primes less than N" is a much bigger problem than "Is N prime" though.
I don't really know much about prime finding algorithms, so this may be completely obvious stuff I just haven't thought about.
-
"Find all primes less than N" is a much bigger problem than "Is N prime" though.
not for the Sieve of Eratosthenes. they are in fact the same problem there. with a time complexity of
O(n(log(n))(log(log(n))))
it's pretty damn time efficient (at the expense of being very space inefficient)
-
at the expense of being very space inefficient
Not really an issue with modern machines ;)

Not really an issue with modern machines
for reasonably small values of N, yes. but since you need at least N bits (more commonly N bytes) you do have an upper bound of how big you can check with the sieve.... ;-P
