@RaceProUK At this point I'm pretty sure the only claim to fame Humans have is that Humans are the only animal that lies to itself about being the only animal to do things in order to feel special or unique.

@Yamikuronue And use a myriad complex spoken and written languages

That's our One Good Trick.
It's a ripper.

IIRC, whales have multiple different languages.
-
@aliceif But none of them are written ;)
-
@aliceif From what I can tell, any species that has a language and also has pockets of geographically separated groups develops dialects, if not separate languages altogether. Whales use different calls within tribes, each of which has a well-defined territory and rarely meet other tribes. We basically did the same thing: dispersed geographically, and developed different calls and dialects based on location.
-
@RaceProUK Written is... probably unique. It's possible we just don't know how to read it, but it's also possible we're the only ones with writing. However, we don't have a pee-based language, so it's kind of a trade-off.

I'm thankful we don't have a pee-based language
-
-
@RaceProUK Ants are also known to brutally massacre and annex other colonies.
And (individual) fights over mating, territories or group dominance happen in most animal species.
So really, there's nothing peaceful about nature, it's just that humans tend to act on a much bigger scale.

Why would I do that when I have a perfectly functional lavatory in the flat?
-
@anonymous234 said in TIL (about the Dark Arts of HTML):
Ants are also known to brutally massacre and annex other colonies.
Ants don't really have any capacity to feel empathy, that we can tell. Their behavior is mostly ruled by instinct.
(individual) fights over mating, territories or group dominance happen in most animal species.
Those behaviors can't usually be boiled down to the "bad" motivations that we associate with human behavior, like "hate" or "revenge".

I'm pretty sure she lacks some of the necessary equipment to do that very easily.
Not that it can't be done, mind you...

Humans were the first to, huh, send other animals to space.
-
@anonymous234 More to the point, things that approach inter-group warfare have been observed in chimpanzees. It seems that the majority of differences between people and other animals are just matters of scale rather than categorical differences. That's comforting on one level…

TIL that the "first video game console" literally could only draw 3 dots on screen, 2 of which were directly controlled by the player. The "game logic" was explained with the manual and left entirely to the player to handle.
...and people paid the equivalent of $578 for that!

@anonymous234 You forgot the overlays!
The graphics were transparent plastic foils you put on your TV!

And if your mother was under 30 when she had you and you were born male in a poor family or female in a wealthy family during times of economic hardship, or weighing less than 8 pounds, or at a time when your mother thought that her own chances of survival would improve if you didn't survive so (for example) she could get pregnant by her new husband more quickly or so she could return to work more quickly, you very nearly didn't make it.
Reality check: is that really so horrifying to people?

To me it is.
By which I mean the getting killed after birth part.
-
Huh. I've been long aware that mothers can be abusive to their children, so to me the idea that they can hurt their babies is pretty normal, and killing is just an extreme form of hurting. Sucks, but that's life I guess.

On-topic: TI(started)L how to riffle cards. Eventually I'll be able to do a in-hand riffle shuffle with a bridge finish :D

hmm... you know i've know the riffle shuffle long enough i'm not sure what the other methods of shuffling there could be.
i mean there's 52 card pickup, and "smooshing" but they never seemed really effective yanoo?
-
@accalia I want to learn a second false shuffle, because the first one I learned doesn't look very nice. A false riffle is a pretty standard one, so learning to do a real riffle shuffle is step one.
But you have your faro shuffle, a variant of which I usually use:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbfJ7oTh5qA
And your Dynamo shuffle:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIVP-jCMYow
and your one-handed faro:

Oh yeah, that's another good one:

Are playing card sizes standardised? I never thought of it, but I'm pretty sure most of the decks I've seen (from different sources) have the same size cards.
-
@PleegWat said in TIL (about the Dark Arts of HTML):

No, but most are pretty similar in size because most people's hands are similar in size. Travel patience decks are often smaller as they let you do a complicated layout in less space.
-
@dkf I have a couple of decks somewhere that are scaled to about a third normal size (with the same thickness), and I think I still have my deck of circular cards too
-
I also own a 'novelty' deck of very narrow cards with rounded top and bottom ends, which is very uncomfortable to play with.
My grandmother had a set of rummikub stones which were inscribed with playing card symbols, though that was otherwise a rummikub set (so extra numbers instead of faces, and in 4 colors).
-
Recently I've heard someone pronounce the word "trough".
See, I had seen it written many times before, but I hadn't really bothered checking how it's pronounced.
So my first impression was that it might be pronounced somewhat like the word "through".
Or "though" / "thorough".
Or "thought".
Or "tough".
God dammit English.
-
@Zecc You know, English is composed of the peepl using it. If they started spelling things differently then things would be spelled differently.

Bingo!
-

trough
/trôf/
but there's a lot of regional variation, most of those alternate pronunciations you write could be recongised as correct depending on the context.
-
-
@PleegWat Whenever I see that thing (it's been posted here a couple times before) I wonder if there's an English equivalent to the 'Groot Dictee der Nederlandse Taal'.
-
@Zecc said in TIL (about the Dark Arts of HTML):

I hate to break it to you but the 'ough's in those aren't pronounced the same.
