What favorite UI element will we lose next? Everything?

I honestly can't tell.
It's a font-awesome glyph. It's named "fa-random" but that's obviously not very descriptive.

...what does that mean? Is it part of the title itself? If yes, why doesn't it show up when I click the link? If no, what does it indicate and why's it there?Ah ha, after seeing http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/new-occasional-different-topic-backgrounds-in-topic-list/6951/70 I see that it corresponds to the highlighted threads, which indicates the special, super-long threads.
-
Super long is part of it, but it's mainly about the fact that the title keeps changing on those topics thanks to Dicsourse's "every level 3 user can make title changes" rule, which makes it harder for people to avoid topics by their name.
-
Right. I've hit that problem with the likes thread a couple of times. (I actually starred that thread so I know not to click on it.) I mostly loosely follow the status thread so no problem there.
-
(I actually starred that thread so I know not to click on it.)
Between the 2 of us, we make 1 complete forum user! I starred that thread so that it is the ONLY one I click on. I'm only in these topics because they're talking about that topic.
-

What I did was mute it. That way it never shows an unread count, so I know to avoid it. Same end result.
-
-
Since the only difference between mute and regular is that you don't get mention notifications, and since I'm small fry enough that I never get mentioned, I have it on regular for the exact same outcome
-

Stars will be disappearing on the next update - get used to the glyph...

In other news, Jeff and I decided we should get started on a full page search page, so this will be on my plate for next month.

the bookmark glyph is there for any topic with bookmarks, stars are converted to bookmarks, not much is lost except for the subtle semantic diff of bookmarking the first post vs starring a topic.
-
the bookmark glyph is there for any topic with bookmarks
So not just the ones that have the first post bookmarked?...
-
correct, on all of them, when I get back I will add a class (for post #1 vs any other post) so you can do custom styling there if you want.
clicking the bookmark icon takes you to the first bookmarked post.
-
not much is lost except for the subtle semantic diff of bookmarking the first post vs starring a topic.
... ... I won't rehash this discussion.clicking the bookmark icon takes you to the first bookmarked post.
As long as clicking the title still goes to the first unread post, that's fine by me.You know, that's actually rather nice, because it means I can bookmark at what post I want to resume reading next time I visit the thread. As long as I don't feel the need to bookmark any prior post, that is.
-

yes, I am violently against attaching magic semantics there.
-
I've edited my post, by the way.

Its actually a bit better than that, clicking on bookmark glyph takes you to the first bookmarked post.
-
Which is why " I can bookmark at what post I want to resume reading next time I visit the thread".
Go get some sleep!

FTFY

The more I think about it though, the more I realize that starring is just the poor man's labeling and prioritizing. Maybe we should simply make a new feature request for labels.

-
Labeling sounds more complicated. I'm not sure it would be worth it.
Starring was just a specific kind of bookmark, where it didn't point to a particular post, but just to a topic. But instead of taking you to the top of the topic, it takes you to where you left off (like clicking on a topic normally does).

Oh, I started typing before you added this. Disregard previous post, I'm convinced!

I frequently bookmark posts with videos for viewing at a more convenient time. It's the third time I open a fully-read bookmarked topic thinking it's a post I haven't given attention to yet, because there is no visual distinction in the bookmarks page.
You can consider me officially pissed off at this.
-
it's a subtle difference, stars vs. bookmarks, but an important one.
i am still not happy that they were conflated, less so because of the checkin comments that were made to remove them.
-
We really need a "goto first unread" function.

I objected at the time about the whole thing, as I did actually use stars, but I've missed being able to star a topic approximately 0 times.

I trust you don't use http://what.thedailywtf.com/bookmarks .Which is understandable considering there is no direct link to there from the UI.
-
No - I use Bookmarks from the menu in the corner.
Which is understandable considering there is no direct link to there from the UI.
Isn't that something we just haven't enabled? I can't remember.What? It's right there?
-
I must have missed those…
the word "starhole" was used....
but I've missed being able to star a topic approximately 0 times.
i have. i don't care so much about the name, but i really miss being able to distinguish between a topic that i starred/bookmarked and a post that i bookmarked. that was useful information for my workflow!

there's no anger. but i still am deeply disappointed in the developer for being so blatantly unprofessional. theres a time and a place for that kind of language, and the commit log is neither the time not the place.
-
It's right there if you're in a topics list.
It's not there if in you're in a thread, like
you areI am (I don't know your workflow) 95% of the time.Hence why "there is no direct link".
-
Sooo... are numerical indicators here to stay or not? Are more CSS hacks on the way?
Find out within next couple of posts. I hope. Because I really don't feel like reading it over on meta.

That's it? I don't see how that's such a bad thing…
@accalia said:theres a time and a place for that kind of language, and the commit log is neither the time not the place.
I'm not so sure 'starhole' can be considered bad language.

Oh.
Yeah, that's deeply unprofessional; if I put language like that in a commit log, I'd expect to be hauled up for disciplinary.
-
I use tabs too. Most of the time I open new tabs from the notifications menu or from the suggestions at the end of a thread, but it's unusual for me to leave topics lists open.
This is partly because the unread counts don't update in stale lists, so I might be tempted to open already-seen threads again1; partly because the number of "new or updated topics" changing in the title of background tabs annoyingly catches my attention.
1 Not that the unread counts are much better in fresh pages, mind you.

That's why I like the visited URL highlighting, and why I added it back when it got Jeffed.
-
I objected at the time about the whole thing, as I did actually use stars, but I've missed being able to star a topic approximately 0 times.
I resorted to a bookmark that what.points to: thedailywtf.com/?filter=bookmarked
It's less convenient than the old GF shortcut but better than click around to get to the front page and than to the bookmarks top level filter.
I'm still annoyed that my bookmarked topics are mixed in with my bookmarked posts without any indication of which is which.

that's my annoyance with it myself.
-

That ought to help somewhat, but not with threads which have new posts since I've last visited.
-
In your case its totally legit, when you click on the bookmark icon from the topic list it takes you to the first bookmark on the topic, we should have an extra couple of shortcuts to
- collapse a topic to bookmarks only
- navigate to next bookmark
That said it is really really rare for someone to be using bookmarks heavily, in the vast majority of cases people only bookmark 1 post in a topic.

True, but implementing
@sam said:collapse a topic to bookmarks only

could mean people use it more heavily ;)

What's the metric here? Are you looking at how many people have any bookmarks? I can believe that most people are just too casual in their use to care enough to bookmark stuff. That said, it's common for me to use my Starred topics list several times per day.
I use bookmarks as bookmarks much less frequently, though they are very useful for getting back to something for a specific reason. I'd have been happier to lose bookmarks and keep starred topics.
