Even back in the 1950s when this was all first set up?
Yes. In the 50ties it was about coal and steel. Two areas where the UK felt confident in. Then followed the peacefull use of atomic energy another area where the UK was ahead. So no in the early stages there was little interest from the UK to join. Even worse after WOII the UK didn't wanted to be involved in Europe because it feared that this would damage it's position with its colonies and that future European instability was a serious issues. That is why they did accept NATO and UN. The involvement of the USA and others was seen as a stabilised factor opposed to the insecurity of other European countries.
-
You realise we pay more into the EU than we receive out of it, right?
Yes. As do a lot of other countries. All by rules agreed upon beforehand. It is no different then regions in a country. One region might pay more taxes then an other region.

I've never seen anybody refer to anybody as "Welsh".
Say that to a Welsh person and you better be prepared to be Educated ...Prime Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYxWY1r7BiM

This reminds me of a liberal friend, who used to gripe about how people need to be willing to pay more in taxes to let the government run ever-increasing portions of our lives.
Then one day he pissed and moaned about how New York pays more than it gets back from the Fed. I told him, "but this is what you keep saying you want!"
He didn't think that was funny.
-
I understand why this is a thing; I was stating it to combat the 'using the EU as a wallet' shtick.

I am not going to carry this debate very far, but:I consider myself a liberal on most issues, and along with that comes often favoring higher taxes. And at least personally, it's not the fact that, broadly speaking, red states tend to receive more than they pay in federal taxes and blue states tend to give... it's the fact that that happens, then the red states complain about big government, and then yell at you if you say "fine let's drop the farm bill."

I just felt like telling that story.

Right--but this was a blue-stater who was saying "we should pay more" and then complaining that he was, in fact, paying more, not what you're talking about.
It's like that woman down in Austin earlier this year, who said "I vote for every city improvement project that comes down the pike: more parks, light rail, free champagne at the public libraries, but the city has to do something about those high taxes! I can barely afford them!"
You can't ask for more taxes and then whine when you get them.

Sorry, but credit where credit is due. It was @blakeyrat.

I want to say that it's Pidgin English, but Google can't find anything like it. I could have sworn that I picked it up from a then co-worker who married a woman that speaks Pidgin English.
-
It's not Pidgin English. Pidgin Murikan maybe.
-
I put it in the same class as "mebbe" and "meah", words that few people outside of myself use, and I have no idea where they came from.
-
Whatevs, obvs.
-
I put it in the same class as "mebbe" and "meah",
"mebbe" isn't all that rare. Is "meah" the same as "meh"? I've probably heard it before, but then again maybe those are both Bostonisms?

Mebbe is definitely less rare than the other examples, I picked it up from someone in Vancouver.
Meah is the same as meh, not sure where I picked up the a, but no, it's not a Boston thing. I don't even have a Boston accent, although I do have a slight Rhode Island accent.

And then we would need to miss you again in this wonderful place ...
I also had to do a fair amount of getting over myself, which was also part of the problem, but I did some of that and I got my laptop repaired and the world seems marginally less cruel now.
-
marginally less cruel
Marginal improvements are unfortunately the reality, no short cuts
-
I'll take that, improving one step at a time works for me.

The Daily Mail would be something like "THE FIVE YEAR OLDS ARE STEALING OUR JOBS!"

I have no idea how funny that is in the context of the aforementioned paper. But I chuckled.

The Daily Wail (aka Daily Fail) is prime target for OUTRAGE. Everything is SCANDAL and OUTRAGE. But only because it affects other people. The core demographic of the DM would never actually be affected by the things they read about.

Not racist enough. Needs to be something like "IMMIGRANT CHILDREN STEALING JOBS FROM TAXPAYERS".
