I already broke the new profile page!
-
whoops. That's what I get for putting an RTL into my location ...
-
Yep. Mine, too.
-
Well, you don't have your website weaved into your location like I do.
(That's because of RTL markering!)
-
and mine! I think it must be ebbaryone.
-
Yes, I first noticed this when I went to my profile on meta.d. I don't have a background over there but everything looked...different. So I came back to see if that change had hit this place yet.
-
I guess it solves some readability issues - just not in a good way.
-
looks okay to me.....
-
No background image is cheating
-
i do have a background image!
wait... you didn't mean desktop background did you? :-P

Paging @ Captain_Obvious

-
sorry, i was having fun. although.....
nope. still doesn't look broken to me.
seems sensible not to allow the image to flow into where the text is.
-
-
Well, TRBT is the way my website and location look like.
-
Yes - it does improve readability but it's completely messed up when you have a lot of text.
And it screwed the cropping on already uploaded versions. See boomzillas.
Oooh I was wondering why it tried to @Luhmann me each time I typed it in.
-
That hurts my eyes and my brain as they try to make sense of it all.
-

lot of text = doing it wrong?
-
Wow, what a great and innovative new way to scale images.
Who wants to see the top sixth of the full-size of my avatar? There you go! The top sixth in glorious full resolution detail!
-
They have no concept of edge cases, at all. Sure, most people are not going to have an avatar that is the size of yours, but what if they do? You get what we have here.
-
It's reasonable to ask for images that are basically banners. Except that's a change to what we've always had. What's the big deal? Pre 1.0 software always does stuff like this.
-
-
@accalia, You seem malnourished. Are you suffering from internal parasites?
-
Yes master Accalia Fairyfox, I shall appear as summoned.
-
Your rat ears are just sexy, @blakeyrat love <3
-
took the words right out of my mouth. those ears are absolutely nibbleable.
-
I imagine they are all Ferengi-like.
-
EVEN BETTER!
:-)
<descriptive text here>
-
so, I might be stupid here but what is wrong with your profile pages exactly?
Is it the background? Not sure what you guys even did. If I read @blakeyrat correctly it put the avatar as his banner without his consent? Because it didn't do that for me, afaict. Is it the Location Link? Because thats a text-field. Not sure how that is broken?!
Filed Under: Confused... | Also: What the hell are User Card Badges and how can I get one, @PJH
-
Because it didn't do that for me, afaict.
didn't for me either, see my first screenshot. i uploaded an image for the second and have since removed it because i like the plain background.
-

Well I didn't take a "before" screenshot because 1) it worked correctly before, and 2) I didn't anticipate Discourse fucking that up.
The point is, you have a space on the screen that's, say, 800 by 300 pixels or so. You need to fill it with an image provided by the user that can be any size at any aspect ratio, how do you do it?
There are smart (ish) ways to do it, one of which Discourse did previously. (I can't remember exactly, but I think it scaled the horizontal to match destination and centered the vertical.) Then there's what it does now, which is fucking bullshit.
Now, fucking bullshit is fine, if you say, "upload a profile picture exactly X by Y pixels", but previously Discourse didn't do that-- it accepted any resolution. So now everybody who previously uploaded an image and were happy with how it was presented are in shitsville, and their profiles now look like ass.
EDIT: there's also the issue Boomzilla alluded to, the whole, "why the fuck are they fucking with shit like this when they have so many ACTUAL bugs to fix???" thing.

Yeah, I could see that. That still doesn't explain the brokenness, though. The point is, you have a space on the screen that's, say, 800 by 300 pixels or so. You need to fill it with an image provided by the user that can be any size at any aspect ratio, how do you do it?
But I am understanding, that you yourself took your avatar in HD glory and uploaded it as a background, correct?
I mean, yeah it's a bit silly to show the top of your image and all. But I would hardly call that "broke the new profile page".

At least they are not just renaming things that should be an admin-setting in the first place, I guess?
Gotta enjoy those small victories ;DLike the "3." becomes "1." regression:

If you put your List in a quote it stays as a three (according to preview) so I propose everybody to write all lists inside random quote-blocks!Filed Under: Let's find out if it stays that way

Right but it worked before, it looked non-broken. Now it looks broken, through no fault of my own.
I mean, yeah it's a bit silly to show the top of your image and all. But I would hardly call that "broke the new profile page".
Well, we already know that I'm about a hundred times more sensitive to bugs than most people, who happily use the buggiest shit imaginable and go, "I don't see anything wrong with it!" because they're all idiots.

Yeah but now you have two 3. and not 3., 4.

Goddamned, I know, I post that link more than anybody.

okay, that makes sense. I was unsure of how it looked before, tbh.

3. testWTF? How this this "logic" work? If you just quote the list it changes the values if there is anything before that it doesn't!
Filed Under: I put logic in ""!
-
The logic is perfectly Discoursistent.
-
I was unsure of how it looked before, tbh.
Me too. There are a dozen sensible ways to fit an image of one aspect ratio into a space for another aspect ratio without it looking like ass. It was one of those. If it hadn't looked ok, I wouldn't have kept the image there.
-
Is it the Location Link? Because thats a text-field. Not sure how that is broken?!
Compare:
My Location is "<-", with an RTL thingie inside. You can verify that by looking at my user card, which is the thing that opens when you click my avatar.
My website is "http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/netflix-is-smarter-than-you-are/2774/2?u=aliceif" which gets shown as "what.thedailywtf.com" but still links to the intended target.
However, the RTL tag jumbles the location and the website together.
-
okay, but that is hard to see from a screenshot:
But now I get what you were doing.
Though, are you "complaining" that the RTL Unicode once again has not been sanitized?
Because while this seems "slightly" abusable I still don't see the "broken" in it. Can't you at least crash my browser with your profile like other people?
Filed Under: Maybe I am expecting too much here ;P
-
Before the change, inserting an RTL only broke the field you put it into. Not any of the other ones~

Why would anyone put an @mention in their profile text.
I'm semi-motivated to go look for the comments about updating this stuff.
-
Why would anyone put an @mention in their profile text.
Well to be honest I stuck that there back in May long before I got more involved with the admin and back-end side of things than I eventually did. I rather suspect it's redundant (certainly in that particular case...)
-
Yeah, but since they're adding styling to that stuff, they should have taken their styles into account.
-
Why would anyone put an @mention in their profile text.
i have it in @zoidberg's text because he's a bot and if he causes trouble with someone who's not in in the joke i want them to know where to send the complaint.

Tired of Discourse? Why not @Zoidberg?
