Question: Is our @codinghorror *the* codinghorror? Featuring Darkmatter trolling.
-
'cause if he is then i am very confused at this like:
http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/vote-of-no-confidence/270/543
here's the post in context:
wait... what's that in the bottom there?
.....? cue confusion.
-
Clearly, @codinghorror needs to give out some likes so he doesn't lose his adminpowers.
I also don't understand your confusion with the queue.
I ALSO don't understand why this is in Programmers' Testing.
Filed Under: Clearly, binding the admin-positions to likes is a brillant idea and should be done immediatly
-
He will probably like any post here where it's spelled right, instead of Dicsourse.
-
Clearly, @codinghorror needs to give out some likes so he doesn't lose his adminpowers.
I hadn't thought of that
@Kuro said:I also don't understand your confusion with the queue.
"queue" is also a stage direction to commence a certain behavior at a certain point in the screen play. This was the meaning i intended here, but i see that i was ambiguous in my phrasing. My apologies.I have been corrected. see post by @antiquarian below.

Is General better?
Filed Under: Clearly, binding the admin-positions to likes is a brillant idea and should be done immediatly
why haven't we done this yet?

thank you oh sage of the gramatical and spellar pendantry. ;-)
-

You think he uses a bot for liking posts. And the bot just searches for "Discourse"?
This should totally be a feature of the bots (instead of changing avatars, btw.I hadn't thought of that
Nah, it was a joke.
I once asked him why he liked a post (one of the "I hate Discourse"-posts of @Lorne_Kates) and he says if he thinks they are well thought out it doesn't matter if he doesn't agree with them or something.I still assume he is using likes as bookmarks... but Discourse is having bookmarks, so whatever.
Filed Under: Are you ever not confused about decisions @codinghorror makes?
-
He likes that you like that Discourse has nice even if undocumented JSON APIs. Were you trying to say that if has information leaks?
-
and he says if he thinks they are well thought out it doesn't matter if he doesn't agree with them or something.
that actually makes a remarkable amount of sense. it's certainly how i use my likes outside of that thread. (unless i'm using them to ammoy blakeyrat with notifications, but i've only ever done that once, i swear!
-
but i've only ever done that
onceeverytime I see a post of (and especially by) him, i swear!FTFY
Filed Under: Be honest, you are addicted to liking blakeyrats posts!
Addendum: I added "(and especially by)" later on after it was pointed out by @darkmatter later on in the topic. Now that it was added his post doesn't even make sense anymore, so he complained. Just to be a jerk, I am now putting this into this post so his complaint also doesn't make sense anymore!
Addendum2: This paragraph is added because I want to see how big @darkmatter will make his font whenever he is editing his post. He would look pretty foolish to not add another paragraph, now that I edited this again!
-
of him or by him?
you son of a bitch, your edit makes my post look retarded!
dicsourse you flaming pile of shit, i hold you softwarily responsible for making me look foolish due to posting on mobile with your limited shoddy support for such devices preventing me from quoting @Kuro properly to save myself from ninja-edit hell.
#@KURO I DON'T THINK IT CAN GET ANY BIGGER
-
He likes that you like that Discourse has nice even if undocumented JSON APIs.
it really does have excellent APIs and with some documentation it could be used to do awesome things. Think of it... turn that spam/likes thread into an IRC chatroom for TDWTF members! it could be done! it probably shouldn't be done, but it could!
Were you trying to say that if has information leaks?
In that the APIs have information and that if ytou are allowed to view that information it leaks.... so no not at all. ;-P
-
of him or by him?
i'm more curious why he fixed that (if inaccurately) but left my misspeeling of annoy alone...
-
Both, obviously. Once you are addicted to liking, you don't stop ever.
Filed Under: I am going to fix it in the post for clarity
-
the json outputs make it possible to skip the page scraping part and go straight to the content consuming.
-
exactly! that's why @sockbot, works as well as he does!
-
@accalia has summoned me, and so I appear.
-
you son of a bitch, your edit makes my post look retarded!
this is why you should always quote the post you are replying to. that way edits become obvious!
-
im on a mobile and it was a nested quote..
so basically, i was fucked by dicsourse, i had no chance
-
you son of a bitch, your edit makes my post look retarded!
How about now?
Filed Under: You don't get notifications if posts directed at you are being changed.
Addendum: Editing this to add @darkmatter so he gets notified again. Making use of knowledge that his next reply provides, thereby also making that one look foolish!
-
im on a mobile and it was a nested quote..so basically, i was fucked by dicsourse, i had no chance
Hmm... JSON API.... Mobile Phone.... Mobile Discourse app sucks donkey gentalia...
Who wants to build a discourse app? relevant link is relevant
-
but i do if you use an @mention to do it.
-
but i do if you use an @mention to do it.
but only the first time. or rather every other tiome because you have to remove the @mention to trigger a new notification.
-
-
I have even been known to get a like from Jeff Himself before now, and yes, he does wander around here, stumbling into threads and occasionally likes things, but I have NFI what his brain is trying to do.
-
Step 1: Get some money
Step 2: Buy a cannon
Step 3: Load said cannon up with blakeyrat
Step 4: Notice how blakeyrat is essencially ammunition now
Step 5: Fire cannon (optional but good for humorous effect)
Step 6: ???????
Step 7: Think about what you have done (also profit)There, with these 7 easy steps you have ammoyed Blakeyrat.
Filed Under: Don't try this at home, kids!
-
turn that spam/likes thread into an IRC chatroom for TDWTF members! it could be done! it probably shouldn't be done, but it could!
You wouldn't be the first to think of it.
The project got a bit stalled due to the fact that what you call "nice simple JSON APIs" is actually a total clusterfuck of "oh, we need it in the front end, so let's just stick it in here". Also, work and stuff.
AFAICT, there's no support for a basic "get all posts in the thread" operation.. Even less for getting raw in bigger amounts.
-
i'll be documenting what i found with sockbot soon.
just as soon as i reach jool and get a stable orbit.
-
-
He probably only read up to the first comma.
-
cue confusion
Yes, that is Jeff.
Clearly, @codinghorror needs to give out some likes so he doesn't lose his adminpowers.
No - it doesn't work like that....
Filed Under: Clearly, binding the admin-positions to likes is a brillant idea and should be done immediatly
I'm still waiting to see what they come up with for TL4.
but Discourse is having bookmarks, so whatever.
And stars. Don't forget the stars.
-
And stars. Don't forget the stars.
How do you star something then? Bookmarks and flags have little buttons, but I don't see anything for star (or is that some special kind of flag/bookmark?
-
you click the greyed out star next to the topic name. it turns a blood orange color and you have stared the topic.
-
But, of course, there's a daily limit.
-
Oh, it's a topic thing instead of a post thing. OK.
-
How could making too many bookmarks possibly be abused such that it should be rate-limited?
-
Denial of service attack?
-
How could making too many bookmarks possibly be abused such that it should be rate-limited?
Fuck knows.
-
I guess if I wanted to DoS my own bookmarks page?
-
obviously wnating bookmarks is doing it wrong butthe community insisted so it was implemented in a shockingly limited way.
also..... is it possible to set a fractional limit? </evil_idea>
-
I guess if I wanted to DoS my own bookmarks page?
After I wrote that, I realized it was incompatible with the orthodoxy on bots. So maybe it's really just that Jeff thinks too many bookmarks is stupid. It probably is, though why they rate limited them...
-
doing it wrong butthe community
Only here would I have tried to parse "butthe" as "asshe" before "but the".
-

So I guess maybe it's just an "in general" and better safe than sorry approach.
-
So I guess maybe it's just an "in general" and better safe than sorry approach.
Just wait until he rate-limits reading posts, to break that thread.
-
I get it, so instead of using the -100 points rule like Microsoft, they use the +100 points rule. Everything is automatically on the the table until someone can come up with enough bad points to rule it out.
...Sadly, while I meant to be snarky, things make more sense in that light.
-
From that post:
@codinghorror said:Where have you seen confused Discourse users?
-
How do you star something then?
-
Heh...of course, that was from January 2nd. So before our time. Seems like few users in the wild actually do much with discourse or pay enough attention to get confused and notice that the problem is the software.

-
There's also a STAR button at the bottom of the topic, in the row of buttons above the suggested topics. You can additionally use the keyboard shortcut, F. Just be careful, because that unstars, too.
-
Once you are addicted to liking, you don't stop ever.
Explains why Blakey avoids it like the plague.
