@boomzilla The answer is, of course, "it depends".
-
@Zecc specifically, it depends on whether you can drive or not.
One of the things I miss from my home country after moving to America is the ability to effectively use engine brake.
-
@boomzilla It looks like they misspelled emergency brake.

Driving automatic is just a different style. Engine braking only works if you have a setting to limit the gear range. (My current car has that, but I find I don't really use it.)

@loopback0 If that bus was not operating local bus lines, it may not have been allowed to use the bus lane. And the ticket is indeed for the bus, not for the car in the next lane over.

It was, ticket issued in error.

Duh. Wouldn't have posted it otherwise.

@Luhmann Hope you brought plenty, as diesel isn't very flammable. (It's more of an environmental hazard.)

I have used it while towing a trailer.

I can see the owner is a tool without looking at the state.
Which is just as well, 'coz after only three hours of sleep tonight, I'm having trouble reading most anything.

I checked first. None of the competitors could throw far enough.

Engine braking can still be done here, if you can find a manual. However, the effect is somewhat modified, as some highways restrict the practice, and literally no-one is expecting it to happen, and it does not generally activate any rear lights. It acts to tell the driver behind you to get fucked - while risking a rear collision. Totally worth it, 9/10, would recommend. Best with a towing hitch.

BEst done with a W123 mercedes with a very solid european hitch. You'll not even need to get the paint touched up, and you'll take the other cars front with you when you leave.
No, I don't have any personal experience, why do you ask?

Alright - this post is ex-EULA so no stealies.
A professional wrestler name of "The City Bus". He's "authorized to use the shoulder" under "congested traffic conditions".
-
@Gribnit said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

A pipe's capacity is higher with smooth flow than with turbulent flow. One car's brake lights going on is enough to cause turbulent flow. A highway in rush hour is above its turbulent-flow capacity, even if it is still below its smooth-flow capacity limit and running fine. That one car's brake lights going on causes a traffic jam which will persist until after rush hour is over.
-
@PleegWat eh, they'll brake, eventually, so best of both worlds.

I don't know American law but this looks like at least 5 years, maybe 10. The guy played way too many video games. On the other hand, looking at the attempts to stop him, the police officers didn't play nearly enough video games.
-
@Gustav I watched that almost live a couple of days ago.
Spoilers:
The perp committed several acts of assault with a deadly weapon on police officers. The news helicopter couldn't really see what the officers on the ground saw that prompted it, but the suspect did something that caused the police to open fire on the suspect in the vehicle. There were at least a dozen bullet holes in the driver's side of the truck, as well as at least 3 larger diameter holes (the news commentator talked about both shotgun and pepper ball rounds) in the driver's side window. Police eventually approached the truck and removed the driver. He was alive and not too injured to walk under his own power.
Police also arrested the driver of the white car at the top of the picture. I never heard why.

Watching police car chases from news helicopters is one of the most decidedly American things out there. Guess there's a market, and a high supply.
-
@topspin I prefer dashcam videos, but those are rarely live.
-
@Gustav said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

Yeah, if they had, they could spawn continuously nearby him.
-
@Applied-Mediocrity that's how it was in the 90s! A police car after police car after police car and a roadblock every few miles. Seriously, go find some heli cam from 20 years ago. Over here it's like they're not even trying. If he didn't randomly break his wheels and crash into that gas station, they'd never catch him.
-
@Gustav Tbh, I blame California.
-
@Gustav said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

It depends on the jurisdiction. This gets into -adjacent territory, but some agencies have policies that prohibit aggressive interaction, unless (maybe) the person is known to have a serious outstanding felony warrant, and sometimes not even then. Others will PIT for nothing more than speeding.
-
@HardwareGeek yeah I heard of that. And I kinda understand that. What I don't understand, however, is that they had him cornered in a dead end street TWICE and they just let him drive past!
Also:
Grove Street, home.
-
@Gustav said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

Policy basically doesn't allow them to intentionally cause a head-on collision to stop a fleeing suspect, which is what they would have had to do to stop him at that point.
-
@HardwareGeek or they could use a pinstripe. There was enough time to setup a pinstripe or two. There are 2 squads there - one could stay a little behind to give more time for preparation.
-
@Gustav At that point, they are at gunpoint with a violent, armed felon. They are more concerned with their own safety than preventing escape. They're watching to see what he's going to do. He's already shown a willingness to ram their vehicles and run them over, and they're prepared to open fire to defend themselves if he attacks them.
Depending on the type of spike strips they're equipped with, they can take 10-30 seconds, maybe more, to deploy. They have to unlock and open the back of their vehicle, find the spike strips among the other equipment, decide where to deploy them (there are potential escape routes on both sides of their vehicles, including across the lawns and bushes, which IIRC is exactly what he did), possibly remove them from a canvas or nylon bag, and deploy them in a way that blocks the paths. All this while facing a guy who may simply decide the way out is through the officer attempting to do this. Nope.
-
@HardwareGeek it's 20 fucking 22. And you're saying the US police, the best funded police force on Earth, with all they fancy high-tech toys, in one of the biggest metropolis in the country, are STILL incapable of safely stopping one car? I want a refund on the future based on false advertising.

@Gustav said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

Yeah, they promised us flying cars. I want my flying car!
incapable of safely stopping one car
Again, that depends on the agency. Some put such high value on the safety of the fleeing suspect that they'll barely intervene at all. Others take the view that if you're fleeing at high speed, you're putting the public in so much danger that we'll do whatever it takes to stop you as soon as possible; if you get hurt as a result, it's your own fault.
-
@HardwareGeek and I understand the first approach, I really do. Up until the guy broke into a random house, ransacked it for keys, stole yet another car, almost ran over the owner, drove to another township, almost ran over a pedestrian, and moments later he missed T-boning cross traffic by a fraction of second. At this point it should be pretty clear that letting him keep going is NOT the safer option.
Edit: okay, okay, not break in. Merely trespassed. And I know he was trespassing because the resident pointed a knife at him. Even without audio the meaning is pretty clear.
