I am in this post, and I do not like it.
When I was in college, the room occupied by my roommate and I was once cited as unsafe by a fire inspector. (Mostly his clutter, but mine wasn't a lot better.)

Why is she paying before work starts?
Down payment to ensure she gets serviced before her neighbors.

It's called "jumping to the front of the queue". Standard bribery practice.

It doesn't surprise me that a fire inspector would cite it if he saw it, but how did it come to his attention? Did they make everyone in the dorm submit their room to regular inspections, or were you singled out for some reason?

At least where I was, the dorm-dorms (bunch of guys in one-room apartments just big enough for a pair of beds and desks, no attached kitchen, shared bathrooms) were inspected regularly. Maybe not by the fire marshal, but I'm sure one would have been called if something was really bad.
-
@Benjamin-Hall I'm glad they treated us better than that. It would have only been freshman year, any way. They only had dorm space sufficient for freshmen. We had to find a space to rent in the neighborhood. Probably part of the reason why frats were popular. (Our Dartmouth chapter was the one that Animal House was based on.)

I went to a religious school for undergrad. They had fairly strict rules about housing generally. Even the off-campus ones were inspected every other month, but more for cleanliness than anything. And it was generally pretty easy to pass if you weren't a total train-wreck. Which meant a lot of people failed or spent the day before inspections frantically trying to clean.
Honestly, I'm betting that most landlords for college students wish they could afford to do regular (ie quarterly or monthly) inspections. Because college students are stupidly hard on apartments, being the careless idiots most of them are. If it's not punching holes in walls (either with fists or by jumping up against them out of an excess of energy), it's not cleaning and attracting rodents/cockroaches/bed bugs/etc that are hard to get rid of, or pouring all sorts of things down the sinks, letting food rot in the cabinets, spilling fluids on the carpets, etc.

@TimeBandit No, Alpha Delta Phi. At least I was told it was based on our Dartmouth chapter.
I think there were two writers, so it may have been a composite.

I think ours only got "inspected" when you left to make sure you took all your stuff and didn't leave a mess.

@jinpa According to Wikipedia, it's actually based on 3 different chapters
The stories were based on Ramis' experience in the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity at Washington University in St. Louis, Miller's Alpha Delta Phi experiences at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, and producer Reitman's at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
