Ed: Making excuses for the sorry state of the English language since 1979.
Oh, the English language has been in a sorry state since long before that.
Personally I blame the qwerty keyboard layout for hastening its demise. People nowadays don't even know what an em dash is. It's 1984 come to life. You can't express it if its not in the layout.
Alt0151 I have this one memorized; I use it a lot. (If anyone cares, Alt0150 for an en dash, which is the correct symbol to separate numbers in a range, "the winter of 2019–2020".) </>

@HardwareGeek Nice. I need to re-remember that (and then forget again).
Also, Alt0153 is the Trademark Symbol™.

@dcon Come on, how hard it is to type
choco install wincompose
into an admin console…(if you don't have
choco
, you should fix that first; it really makes updating things a lot simpler)

@Tsaukpaetra ASCII letter codes seem to fit nicely.
I thought as much. My translation tables must be corrupted, all I got was a star, an f, and a question mark....

Were you looking up decimal values in a hex table?

@TimeBandit XCompose is enabled by “simply” choosing a compose key in the xkb setup. In KDE it's in the keyboard layout, advanced tab; not sure where it is in Gnome and unfortunately the KDE settings stopped printing the assembled options string some time ago.

Fun fact: if you google "I have to do what I have to do" (without quotes), you get COVID info.

When in doubt, bombard the user to death with covid info.
Or that sentence is too close to "what do I have to do", but that's the boring answer.

Yeah, sure they had no idea what their poster was implying. Just like all those Vietnamese places with names like Phở King Garden.

@Mason_Wheeler That's not how the constellation of ibex looks like. But yeah…
-
@Mason_Wheeler said in The Official Funny Stuff Thread™:
There's a book called "The Stars: A New Way To See Them" that attempts to recreate the actual diagrams that the Greeks may have had in mind instead of the more "modern" geometric ones. Their version of Leo actually does look like a connect-the-dots of a lion, Gemini like two men with their arms around each other's shoulders, and having spent some time with the book I can spot these constellations instantly whenever they're in the visible part of the night sky. Other constellations may vary to some degree from what they represent, but all are at least feasible.
The author is H.A. Rey, the same guy who did the Curious George series of illustrated children's books.

I also believe the drift of nearby stars relative to distant ones is significant over 2k+ years.
