Nope. Network effect.
You're a youngster, so you probably don't remember just how shit search engines were before Google. It used to be that you'd have to read through 5–10 pages of results to find something tangentially related to what you were looking for (assuming you were using AltaVista) or that you'd only get good results if what you were looking for was something that the manual curators had thought of (assuming you were using Yahoo!) but with Google you got the thing you wanted on the first page, usually as the first result. It was totally transformative.
-
@dkf Yes, and now they've already done that, and a lot more things too. Where's the room to innovate?

A new engine, in order to even try to compete with them, needs mountains of test data
Weren't bing caught literally using Google behind the scenes a while ago?
Yup. Only way to compete with Google is to literally steal from them.

Heck, I remember that with Google.

The manually curated directory didn't scale well as the web grew, obviously, but it was nice while it lasted.

I use Bing, in Chrome, and have no regrets.
(I try my searches there first for the Microsoft Rewards. Getting a $5 Amazon gift card every month or three is nice. If that fails, I can always manually go to Google.)Yeah me too. Which reminds me I was almost up to a free Xbox controller but I need to check if they still have that active. I don't do the "daily offers" or whatever very often so I could get points a lot quicker.
Also I need to check in because I think they combined Xbox Rewards with Microsoft Rewards so maybe I have more points than I think...
-
@jaloopa said in ⏱ You know you've been spending too much time on TDWTF when...:

No.
They were "caught" using a browser extension to index pages that were inaccessible to a traditional page crawler, which a Google engineer wrongly attributed to "stealing Google search results".
But how did Google get those search results? They used a browser extension to index pages that were inaccessible to a traditional page crawler.
That was a total bullshit story. Of course since it was anti-Microsoft, the entire tech press swallowed it hook, line, and sinker.

Once you delete it the first time (either inadvertently, which is stupid easy to do, or because you didn't want your boss to see it), it will never show on the thumbnails again, regardless of how many times you hit said site.

I've read in a comment I myself wrote a few days ago the word "fucking".
What I had actually written was "faking".
Yes, I blame TDWTF for this.

Yahoo in the early days simply never had anything I actually wanted to look for. AltaVista had what I wanted, but it was often hard to get past the mountain of irrelevant crud; the automatic spidering was fine, but without the bibliometric page scoring algorithm (which was Google's innovation) you still had quite a bit of work to do to find the page you wanted in the list.
There's a huge difference between “your desired link is not on the list” (early Yahoo), “your desired link is #153 on this list of thousands” (AltaVista), and “your desired link is #1 on this list of thousands, even for obscure stuff” (Google).

// FIXME &@$%"#!$ Faking this to get ${client} out of my hair until I've got time for a real fix
You know code is good when it is surrounded by a comparison of a variable to a database row id.
Spoiler alert: I haven't had enough time for a real fix yet. But I did get ${client} out of my hair. I hope to refactor the whole code module away anyway.

Yeah, got me. Stupid “smart” quotes.
This would have been better if auto-correct had managed to do its job and fix the “typo”, in a meta-funny way.
Oh it did, just not the way you thought:
Spend too much time on TDWTF thread is where?

A friend sends a "funny" picture (apparently an instagram screenshot) of some social activities, and you're so lost you almost write:

No, the database IDs are still the same, and I managed to remove that bit of exceptional code.
