Turns out, it was a fly banging on a glass globe chandelier, trying to get out.

Caffeine is for the living, time to sleep when you're deadI don't caffeine. Yes, I know, but...
Caffeine in general or just coffee?
I think coffee tastes likeshitguanokopi luwak, but supposedly the tea I drink sometimes has caffeine in it, too.I like tea. Until recently, I drank tea equivalent to about 3 cups of coffee worth of caffeine a day. But doctor say .
-
@HardwareGeek you're banned from caffeine and spicy food?
I think you need a better doctor.
-
@anotherusername I'm about to be banned from food. That's the only way to stop the fatty liver, apparently...

It's not necessarily a total, absolute ban like gluten; more something to be avoided or I might have mild to moderate regret later. The main reason for avoiding caffeine is its diuretic effect. I still have a cup of tea once in a while, when I really, desperately need to stay alert. But I've gone from 2–3 large mugs a day to a cup every couple of weeks. Avoiding spicy food is because acid reflux and minimizing heartburn; it's not clear that's the real cause of pain, but it's easy to eliminate.

Status: Going to have online job interview. The lady who set up the meeting sent me an email (in Polish) with a link to their meeting platform, and added some quick tips what to expect and what to do during interview. Among other things, I should show "interes" and engagement. She's Ukrainian, and she probably doesn't know proper translation of "interest" to Polish, so she used a word that looked close enough - unaware that "interes" is a slang word for dick.

Or she knows and the job isn't what you think it is.

A while ago I bought a can of olives in the supermarket, and the cashier had to enter the price manually because it had no barcode. Which I found very weird. Why would they stock a product with no barcode?
I just noticed it says "this product not to be sold separately" on the can. Well, that would explain that.

@Tsaukpaetra Let me introduce you to a little thing called Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. It lets you do things like set up IPSEC tunnels between virtual networks over the internet, in such a way that it doesn't immediately fall over the way direct access would.

Is that the same Windows Firewall that lets you install fonts?

Yes, that's the "with Advanced Security" part
-
@HardwareGeek oh that's right, you're banned from gluten also.
-
@anotherusername I've never actually said so here, but I've discussed gluten, celiac disease and other reasons for being unable to eat gluten, gluten-free foods, and the cost of gluten-free food with a level of knowledge that I would have no reason to care about if it didn't personally affect me. This knowledge is recently acquired, and I'm still adjusting.
-
@HardwareGeek Well, I had initially only gathered that either you or someone in your immediate family is banned from gluten, but you posted this and then I kind of put two and two together.

You could certainly introduce me, but I highly doubt my 450MB installation of Windows has that capability...

You know, having lots of plugins on a WordPress site isn't that bad.
It's the plugin-plugins to make plugins interact with other plugins that bother me.

@loopback0 An evolving displeasure with the damaging-to-human-civilization Lord of the flies playground.
That cesspit has gotten well beyond "the place you can have a difference of opinion" and is uncomfortably close to "extremist training ground".
Let's step back for a second. What the hell is this place?
It's the forum for TheDailyWtf.com
What's that?
It's a website for software people to make fun of the dumb shit we come across professionally.
Why would software people do that? Stress relief, and to better ourselves and our profession.
To further that mission, there's this little clubhouse bolted on the side. As with almost every internet community, it grew beyond it's original narrow remit and developed a cast of characters. Those characters are people with wide and varying interests. May as well bolt on some spaces to explore those.
That's what the Garage is.
Problem is that this particular add-on has grown to be incredibly toxic. This place has never been particularly cosy, but at worst it's been users vs. bad engineering. Thats literally what it's for. But with the evolution of the garage, now it's users vs. users.
More good, reasonable, members of this community who actually care about better software have been driven away by this shit than I can count offhand. "Hawhaw good riddance they were just fragile snowflakes" you say? Fuck you, assbag, you're the problem.
Soft touch is over. If garage content or garbage attitudes spill out of the garage, I'm going to shovel it right back in. If you're going to be hateful shits to each other, you can go do it in the corner reserved for it. I don't care what your politics are. All aggressive political "debate" goes to the garage. Rational good faith discussion can be in the Salon or Lounge as situationally appropriate, but if you step across the line I'm going to move you.
And if anyone gets the bright idea to start flagging decent good faith discussions just because you don't like them, I will take a particularly dim view to those actions.

FWIW, I've now soft-blocked myself from the Garage. I wasn't even enjoying reading it any more.

@pie_flavor I was there. There were a couple of dbags, but nowhere even vaguely near this level.
Also "it was like that before" is a trash reason to continue with a self evidently crap state of affairs.
-
@Weng what level? You have people stating their opinion, and on the other side you have Lorne screaming. Toxicity of opinion != toxicity of discourse.
-
@pie_flavor said in The Official Status Thread:

It's the wilful misinterpretation of each other in ways designed to try to make the other look bad that's particularly wearing. Doing to do wisecracks is one thing, but doing it to be hurtful is another thing entirely.
-
@dkf I saw nobody maliciously misinterpreting Lorne. I saw it a hell of a lot in the other direction.

I only read (love how that can be present or past tense and the sentence is correct both ways - I wrote this in present tense) some of it.
Once a thread starts going seriously off the rails, I mute it. Some are still interesting (at times), so I just End the thread to catch up / ignore.
-
@pie_flavor said in The Official Status Thread:

But the argument you've just presented right here in this thread in that statement that I quote just here is itself dangerously close to a malicious misinterpretation. I'm not talking about what specific individuals have said as should have been obvious from the words that I actually wrote. I'm talking about the overall patterns. My life is spent on seeing patterns in things! I'm good at it. It's the key thing I'm paid to do. (I'm often too lazy to do anything about the patterns I see, but that's a separate matter.) The pattern I was seeing in the Garage was like a mental poison that is self-reinforcing; I reject the whole place, without regard for whatever the politics of whatever is being discussed is. Even the threads where I was strongly in agreement with the majority view were too toxic for my taste, with people just being ganged up on for the minor crime of being sometimes wrong on the internet.
I do not like being misinterpreted, but if it makes a
good jokeshitty pun or double entendre then that dislike gets greatly tempered. I also do not like others being misinterpreted (other than to make jokes, provided those jokes are intended to amuse all).

That is mostly the point of the garage. They don't shout at you because they believe differently; they shout at you because it's fun. Just because the same opinions get used elsewhere doesn't mean they'll be applied the same way.
