    We've been fairly lucky here. While global warming is falling from the skies, the roads were too warm for accumulation during the morning commute.

    I hear that's not supposed to last the day 😿

  • Boss told us to go saturday (tomorrow) to a all-day event. He didn't even ask us to come, he told us to be there and assumed we all would go. He even bought us company t-shirts to wear.

    Now, I like spending my Saturdays home. So I should have told him to suck it right away, but I never found the courage to do so. Leaving me with the awkward obligation of telling him that now, or tomorrow by text message.

    Turns out, that's moderately important to have. Near-field distance accuracy decreased by ~35 percent. The unavailability of FOV also necessitated adjustments in environmental information gathering.

    Test was worthwhile, I guess.

    Ugh, now we're back in not-my-code territory...

    And I'm back in my-code territory. Apparently I was attempting to use the SQLDriverConnect feature of returning the "completed" connection string, by allocating a character array and passing in its' pointer. This was apparently a mistake, because that somehow lead to a stack overflow deep deep in NTDLL, so I nixed that so I could at least submit the windows-side updates to the code.

    Unfortunately that didn't help whatsoever on the Linux side, but... progress?

    (b) not true?

    The JetBrains IDEs (which are all language-bound profiles of a single core IDE, a very sensible way of doing things on their part) get quite unhappy once you really extend them to handling multiple languages at once. According to colleagues who have tried (I personally don't like the feel of them in the first place). When you're really into multi-language work and are having to do debugging across several systems at once, that's where Eclipse starts to get really good; that's the core problem it actually tackles. It's not everyone's situation, but it's mine and has been for years.

    Hmm. That hasn't been my experience with them at all - in fact, IME, IntelliJ does really well in a multi-language environment (even supporting multiple languages in the same file). Perhaps that's something in the newer versions of the IDE?

    He's talking about the multiple customized versions - CLion, WebStorm, PyCharm, etc. IJ has plugins for every language, and works fine when you're using multi-language projects, but the separate IDEs are for when your entire project is oriented towards a particular language, and you want an environment set up specifically for that language instead of mixing and matching plugins.

    It listens to a TCP socket. Then, hand-interprets it as an HTTPrequest,splits out and responds a template string, or starts/kills a process as defined in the config. It also keeps track of processes it spawned. Most of the code is supporting fluff to do that.

    Beside, IntelliJ is not free

    Yes it is.

    Not in the way it matters.

    And what is that way?

    Commercial use.

    Oh, I forgot I was talking about the Pro edition. You're at an educational institution, so you can have the full version of IntelliJ for zero of your Earth usdollars.

    @dkf And I do. But IntelliJ Community is still 100% free.

    Anyone wanna help me write a makefile to compile a folder of .cpp and .h files?

    If you don't get smartass about it, makefiles are easy to write. (A very large fraction of makefiles are full of smartass. Be warned!)

    Suppose you're making a program called foobin from the compiling and linking of source files foo.cpp, bar.cpp and grill.cpp. The files depend on a common header foo.h, need to include snowflake include files in /opt/abc/include, and link to the snowflake library in /opt/abc/lib. A fairly basic setup. Then we can write the file (conventionally called Makefile, with that capitalisation) like this:

    # You might prefer -g for default compiler flag to -Os
    CXXFLAGS=-Os
    CPPFLAGS=-I/opt/abc/include
    LDFLAGS=-L/opt/abc/lib -lsnowflake
    INCS=foo.h
    OBJS=foo.o bar.o grill.o
    TARGET=foobin

    all: $(TARGET)
    $(TARGET): $(OBJS)
    foo.o: foo.cpp $(INCS)
    bar.o: bar.cpp $(INCS)
    grill.o: grill.cpp $(INCS)
    clean:
    	-$(RM) $(TARGET) $(OBJS)

    That's enough when taken with the built-in defaults, and gives you both make all (which will create the binary for you, and supports incremental builds) and make clean (to get rid of all the intermediate files). You can get a lot more complicated than that, but it will just get harder to understand if you do. (In particular, you can write rules to determine dependencies automatically, and that's where the makefile starts to become a horror.)

    Will try. Most of the Makefiles I tried to inspect were wholly full of Nuuu unless they specifically kickstarted another Makefile in a subfolder (and even then...)

    I don't plan on having any real dependencies, basic things like how to launch a process and how to open a listen socket are probably the most complicated portions of the code that I believe aren't portable. Oh, and the INI reading. Might just shove that away and use command-line arguments for the Linux version...

    @Tsaukpaetra Don't try to use entirely the same build instructions for different platforms. That way lies madness and complexity. Your instinct to put the platform-specific bits of the code in their own files is very good; it helps keep the amount of #ifdeffery down and that's a huge benefit.

    More like a redistribution of time to other things I was already doing. So 🤷♂

  • Status: 11 days since I bought the thing with guaranteed 5-day delivery.

    On an entirely unrelated topic: 2 years 4 months 20 days until the scheduled launch of the James-Webb space telescope. I've calculated that the launch date has been delayed an average of 0.7 years per year, which puts the expected real launch date about 8 years from now.

    @Tsaukpaetra
    I see no harm in using .ini files. I use them even in my .NET stuff. One reason: it's a brain dead simple format, easy understandable both for humans and computers. And that is a property that five nines of shit sorely lacks.
    Although I didn't use the somewhat unwieldy GetPrivateProfileString and rolled my own. Which incidentally allowed me to name the class Initech, which then makes everything okay (right?).

    Initech will be a secret password for God mode, if I can slip it in.
