@Jaloopa Sorry, should have linked the acronyms. DLSS is supposed to be the next-gen graphics anti-aliasing powered by machine learning.
Linus Tech Tips is a decent YouTube PC gaming channel, If you're thinking of a new graphics card any time soon then this is a good video on NVIDIA's brand-new cards:
-
@Cursorkeys I'm living off my integrated GPU and 1GB of RAM until either the cryptocurrency bubble pops or production ramps up again.
Because if I tried to buy those right now I'd have to spend 3x what I spent on everything else.

@Cursorkeys Oh, so it's about graphics cards?

@Applied-Mediocrity said in The Official Status Thread:
Having very low expectations at first it seemed to me they're leaking other users' information, just slightly obfuscated. It wouldn't matter if they're partial or misspelled. But surely they're generating random numbers, directions and road/avenue/whatever. I'd say it's still not a very good approach. A determined attacker can probably rule some of them out by doing address lookup against any decent map or address database, and probably make an educated guess using other available information.
It seems like an attacker could either exhaust it by trying all the different options if they stay the same, or if the wrong answers change he can determine the correct answer by collecting the common parts.

Yep, the long drought is finally over...except we seem to have got Bud Light instead of the Weißbier we were expecting. Oh well, it's making the last generation cheaper anyway.
@dkf Yep, there is no information yet on how it works except for a nebulous statement that some sort of calculation is done by NIVIDA themselves on a per-game basis and then some sort of precomputed dataset is shared with the users to get it to work.
-
@Cursorkeys said in The Official Status Thread:

Yeah, but that channel features Linus and I can't stand that idiot for more than 5 seconds due to a combination of grating voice and having shown
levels of incompetence. I keep getting his videos suggested to me on YT, though, where the latest one was titled "Why I pirate Windows" or something to that effect, which makes me hope Microsoft will smite him for promoting piracy to his viewers.
-

AKA just like any other ML/DL marketing.
Might still be interesting to see if it actually works.

@anonymous234
I'd think that would just make it worse when it inevitably were to be shipped.Reminds me of a time when a customer returned a tablet they had bought for their daughter. It wouldn't run some game or another. We'd refund it immediately, because I knew all those <100€ Mediateks were shit, no contest, and they chose some sort of Galaxy Tab anyway. But we had to sell that returned thing. Packaging was not damaged, no signs of use, so wiped it, cleaned it, IIRC even swapped the charger, because the original cable wouldn't look good as unraveled cables are wont to do. Like new, one would think. But did we forget the colorful "Happy 10th birthday, our lovely daughter" among the manuals and other paperweight? Oh yes, we did.

The options should stay the same, but after a couple of wrong guesses, the extra verification system should get locked out... depending on what the verification system is actually gatekeeping for, and what other sign-in options were available to you, you should then either have to:
- remember your original password and use it to log in
- log in using a two-factor authentication method which you'd previously created
- sign in from a device which had a "remember and trust this device next time I sign in" cookie
- call customer service to have them verify your identity and restore your access to your account.
-
@anotherusername Which means I can easily lock somebody out. Sounds like a DoS.

The bad news is, we have a 1300-line class that I just had to spend several minutes at a whiteboard figuring out what parts of it work with which other parts.
The good news is, the TFS history proves it's not my fault.
The better news is, I am now going to rip this class apart into 7 different subclasses.
-
@Unperverted-Vixen
The bestest news is, new bugs!

@Unperverted-Vixen said in The Official Status Thread:

Amateur.
When you have a class with multiple 1300-line methods (and where each is such a tangled ball of crud that the auto-refactoring tools balk) then you're really talking! It only gets better when a colleague tries to persuade you that this is the best way, as it avoids binding in dependencies over the rest of the architecture.
“Right. So you've extracted all that and wedged it in this pantheon of God methods. Did that really help?”
-
@topspin said in The Official Status Thread:

No; only you would be locked out -- from using the "forgot password" option, or if you stole their username/password but the system requires further validation, from logging in on an untrusted device and/or without two-factor authentication.
It wouldn't lock them out of their account, because they could log in with their username/password, from a trusted device, and/or with the two-factor authentication method that they set up.

As already mentioned, crypto bubble already popped. Right now you can get fairly decent deal on GTX 1060 6GB, which should last you for at least half a decade (right now I'm using GTX 760 I've got in 2014, and I've yet to find a game that I can't play on medium-high settings with 60FPS).
