Ah, I see someone just finished Halo: Combat Evolved for the first time. :D
Not finished. Quit in disgust after about 6 tries.
Oh, and there's this nifty little bug with the composer on Chrome (Android), where occasionally when the keyboard opens, the composer scrolls down so the submit/close button and that header (but not the editor buttons) is off the screen. And then disallows scrolling up. So you can't submit the post. Or even use the back button, because the "are you sure you want to leave" popup is off the screen enough to not be a valid tap target. You have to manually navigate to a different page.
This is inconsistent, however.
Refreshing the page tends to work

It's not impossible, just horribly frustrating.
I'm guessing that you're fairly heavy handed. But then again I simply don't remember finding this part very hard.
Perhaps a better way of describing this is to note (again, IIRC) that the game simply doesn't checkpoint very often at all; the driving is just the last stage of the level. The other levels also spread the checkpoints well apart, which can suck a bit if you get things badly wrong just before a checkpoint.
Bu I did like the canyon levels.

@benjamin-hall I don't remember having a problem with it, but it is absolutely ages since I played it.
From what I can find, either people love the Warthog's handling or they hate it. I'm in the second case. It's so alien to anything I'd expect, and requires arcsecond-perfect aiming from thumb-sticks. And has inertia to the point that it sloshes around like crazy.
Yeah, I treat it like a jet-ski TBH.

The submit/cancel header usually becomes visible by rotating my phone to landscape. (Landscape mode is otherwise utterly useless for posting, since not even a single line of text is visible between the keyboard and the submit/cancel buttons, so it is impossible to see the post as I type.) Sometimes it even stays visible when I rotate back to portrait.
Also, this is quite new. I'd never seen this prior to the last week or so.

Not really. You must have (copy/)pasted a string that had those chars. Windows strips all "bad" chars out and leaves the rest.
Obviously not.
Edit: Ok, not obvious, because since it's just a single shot you wouldn't know that pressing Enter just causes that error dialog and then clicking OK on it just cancels the rename operation.
But is the copied string in the clipboard now clean of illegal characters?

I initially read that as meaning that you did have motivation to do anything that was unproductive. Then I read better and realized you meant you were "finding motivation [... to be] lacking [...]."

And with no checkpoints either. Run out of time by 5 seconds? Restart at the beginning. And it's mandatory. Because arbitrary hard is the best hard, an I right?
If you're talking about the game I think you're talking about... it wasn't that hard. And I thought I remembered it having a few checkpoints...
There weren't checkpoints in my version. Maybe that's changed?

Why the fuck would you use Xcode (other than to bootstrap a real compiler) for anything on OSX? It's horrible. (It might be more necessary for iOS and so on, but for the full OS? Definitely not!)

I am literally shocked you think the Warthog controls are bad. The controls are amazing.
However the vehicle is very "slippy" on that level, on purpose. (I mean, IIRC, it's driving on metal the whole time...) But that has nothing to do with the controls. Halo is the first FPS game to really nail vehicle controls.
Wait until you play Halo 4. They made a level that's Star Fox. Like... literally exactly Star Fox.

I usually compile with makefiles. I only need xcode for some debugging - tho at this point, if I have an issue, the issue is likely on Windows too. (Haven't need to do any real xcode debugging for a while, thank $deity)
-
@blakeyrat I struggled with the warthog the whole game. For some reason the two stick controls don't work for me. I'd much prefer steer with a stick and accelerate/brake with buttons/trigger, keeping the camera fixed behind the vehicle.

Xamarin is nice this time of year. And only requires marginal contact with XCode ;)

You're talking about the one where you fly through the tunnel with moving obstructions and turrets shooting at you, and you finally come to an open space where you're supposed to blow up something in the center of the next area and then fly around the perimeter shooting out the power orb in each turret? That's:

If that marginal contact is “bootstrap a real compiler toolchain” then that's OK.
I mostly use gdb or lldb for debugging, depending on various weird features of the code in question. Or printf(), because apps that run on a distributed network of soft-realtime embedded processors aren't nice (at all!) to attach debuggers to.

Tribes certainly did hovercraft right. But all the vehicles in that game where hovercraft specifically because they knew they didn't have the computing power yet to get wheeled vehicles right.

Tribes 2? The game whose physics were so disasterously awful that the mobile base would frequently either explode for no reason or shoot off in a random direction? The game where they had to change the tank to a hover-tank because they couldn't make the wheels work, but then forgot to change the in-game art to remove the wheels? That... that Tribes 2?

I think "the vehicle hits an angle on the navmesh and goes flying 400 feet to the left for no reason" disqualifies a game from being described as having "good controls". Even if the mapping of the buttons and mouse makes sense.

That's my biggest complaint about the Warthog controls in Halo--it's stupidly prone to twisting, rolling, and sliding. As if the wheels were greased and the aeroframe completely anti-stabilizing. If you go over a slight bump at anything other than the perfect alignment, you'll roll one direction or another and probably flip the vehicle.
-
@blakeyrat I don't recall that. Then again, I was like 13 and deep in the leetspeek phase, so brain damaged.

Status: Hit 'print screen' during an OW game, because I found a funny bug. After I exit several games later, I see the mouse flickering and the computer being slow. And my hard drive is suddenly filled. I check for newly modified files and there is a four gigabyte video that has no duration meaning it's still being written to. I check the taskbar and there's the recording icon saying ShareX is recording the screen.
I must have hit Shift+PrtSc, not PrtSc. If I think about it that means it's been recording the screen for four hours straight.

I just had a mettle code review with a super-junior job candidate (just finished college, looking for his first job). He brought his own laptop, coded for 4 hours, and did a pretty solid job on a full-stack app problem. The kid...
- is super into go, rust and clojure stuff
- programs in emacs
- he used to be into stuff like i3 on his linux, but that was "too configurable". So now he installed some "void linux" distro where you have to compile everything from scratch
- when it was time to save the task to flash drive, turns out his super-vegan linux isn't configured to handle USB properly, so we had to rsync the stuff out (rsync also wasn't installed)
- has a black tape over camera on his laptop
Kids these days, huh.
