Or SCPover ssh!
That's not quite so bad; you at least don't get the overhead of multiple network connections there.

Yeah, FTP requires two connections just to transfer one file.

Fuck you noisy people.

@ben_lubar You know, I used to think that was weird. But then I thought, if you need two simultaneous streams of data, shouldn't two simultaneous connections be considered the proper way?

But, is it really simultaneous? After all, it's not like the bits are coming two at a time then...

Your ethernet cable can only transmit one bit per time period, so you're already multiplexing connections at least at that level. There's no reason to do the TCP handshake every single time you want to transfer a file, not to mention that FTP isn't encrypted at all.
Plus, in some environments, having multiple connections isn't possible. For example, my shitty router only allows me to connect on each port to my own external IP address once, so I had to add a bunch of hosts file entries to skip the router when accessing my local BuildMaster instance.

Clearly multiplexing has to be done at some level. But it really seems like a responsibility of the network stack, considering it's kinda the whole point of packet switching.
Then again, TCP does things like congestion control which should clearly be based on "physical" connections, not "logical" connections. So I don't know. Maybe split TCP into a few more layers or something.
Plus, in some environments, having multiple connections isn't possible. For example, my shitty router only allows me to connect on each port to my own external IP address once, so I had to add a bunch of hosts file entries to skip the router when accessing my local BuildMaster instance.
Congratulations, you found the real reason why network protocols fail! Anything that's not port 80/433 TCP is expected to fail with home routers. Which is why we are doomed to "everything-over-HTTP" forever.

Of course, to actually get the money I've got to find my title, and since it's not in the "most recently used documents" folder at my desk, that means it's in any one of about ten identical boxes labeled "Documents" in my storage closet.
Sigh. I should probably know where such things are offhand. My organizational skills leave something to be desired. I'd just order a new one, but looks like that'd take about three (calendar) weeks and I assume insurance would be annoyed by that.
I need to order a new one anyway because I found out... I actually don't have a clear title! DMV informs me that I still have a lienholder on my title, despite my having paid off the loan many years ago. I thought you automatically got a new title, but turns out I need to get a lien release letter and use that to get a new title; meanwhile, the loan is so old the account doesn't even show up online. Well, this is going to be a thing. Live and learn. My manager says he went through the same thing when he was selling his first car.

Did I mention that BuildMaster is located at https://buildmaster.local.lubar.me?
AKA, it's on port 443.
And in any case, my router accepts SSH connections from outside, it just only allows one per remote IP address. And when someone connects from behind the router to the external IP address, it looks like the router is the one sending the request.
Even on my older, shittier router, I was able to get SSH working by putting it on a 5xxxx port. (People who know the name of my ISP will probably be able to guess the port number.)

This was triggered by completing an in-game task. Normally, you get one notification, and therefore one check for Level Up.
Instead, something has gone horribly wrong, and the stupid thing does it on game Tick until however long before it decides to stop.
This resulted in a constant stream of notifications for no less than four minutes...

You know how those vehicle history reports are usually really boring? I just found one that's utterly fascinating.
5/23/2013 Missoula, Montana. Car is titled to the manufacturer as a fleet vehicle.
5/31/2013 Great Falls, MT. Severe accident reported. Yes, within a week, while owned by the manufacturer.
4/28/2014 Somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Car is auctioned off at 10438 miles.
6/9/2014 Somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Car is auctioned off at 10438 miles.
6/11/2014 Somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Car is auctioned off at 10438 miles.
7/16/2014 South Dakota. Car is titled and registered as a rental vehicle.
4/15/2015 Denver Colorado. Car is titled to a new owner, with a lien. 43504 miles.
9/23/2016 Car is recalled for a defective windshield wiper motor cover.
5/8/2017 Hailstorm in Denver totals the car.
4/27/2018 Denver CO. Auction time again! 75738 miles.
5/??/2018 Some dickhead named Weng bids on it for his dad.My line of thought here is that the early accident and manufacturer ownership made the car UTTERLY RADIOACTIVE to the auction set (shady used car dealers, mostly). It sold every one of those times, but was quickly relisted. I suspect it was some sight-unseen buying followed by "NOPE! I'M OUT!".
It then landed with the shadiest of the shady, a indie mechanic with a rental/loaner fleet. After racking up 33000 miles in EIGHT MONTHS, it gets shoved off on some unsuspecting sucker.
God then decided he hated this car and killed it.
-
Additionally, in weird assed cars, I'm also looking at this one:
https://www.copart.com/lot/30573528
I can discern EXACTLY ZERO reason for that car to have a salvage title. It looks perfect. It runs. It drives. "BIOHAZARD" isn't written on the window because it smells like death inside. History report is clean, except for the sudden salvage title.
I expect it to go exceptionally cheap because nothing at all adds up.
-
@weng this is a very good car for Canada's winter.

The only thing above the browser viewport is a single post from me listing the steps I already tried to use to debug the issue I had.
There are two kinds of users on ticketing systems:
- Low-information users, who don't post information that might be unnecessary.
- People like me, who know that sending unnecessary information doesn't hurt, but miscategorizing information as unnecessary information and omitting it does.
Thankfully, since I work for a DevOps company, most of the tickets I get are the latter.

@tsaukpaetra I (have to) use it at work. No idea if it actually slows things down... It's completely invisible. Except for the requirement to have a USB fob inserted when booting (unless you go for the type-a-password when booting).
The only bad thing? You get screwed by updates because the machine can't reboot if you don't leave the USB fob in overnight (I don't). So the morning is delayed while updates complete.

I don't want to post details, which is too bad, because it's a nice WTF, but it's entirely possible somebody from work might read this, and I don't want to dox myself. Anyway, my employer bought me a not-cheap-ass laptop, but it wasn't designed for business use, and its TPM did not play nice with Bitlocker.
