It's been fine for the last three years. Hard drives aren't so unprotected anymore that standard strip magnets will do any kind of damage.

@tsaukpaetra Yes, it's not the first time he's upvoted one of mine. But I tend to be subtle, or at least indirect, so he might not recognize I'm making fun of him. Still, it's amusing, in a WTF way.

That's because he's completely delusional.

status: we've had 2 full staff meetings in a row last two days.
1st was a HPC whose message was (and little more) "students need mentors. No, I don't have any advice on how to do this better. No, I don't have any advice on things to avoid"
2nd was a local cop who came to do part 1 of an active shooter training. He was a much better speaker, and showed some gruesome videos. I'm not too fond of the "run, hide, fight" mantra, but it's at least not bad advise. Not so much for teachers, because we have other responsibilities. He did keep stressing "AR-15", even though it's not the gun most used or the most dangerous gun in that circumstance. But most of his points were decent, if a bit over the top in presentation.

I'm watching right now. It's really slow pace. 10 minutes in, and it sounds like some older channel (mars argo) did things like the Poppy channel but smaller scale?
-
@e4tmyl33t said in The Official Status Thread:

If you know about Poppy, then the guy that works with the character basically copied-pasted from his previous character which was played by his ex-girlfriend, Mars Argo, who actually used that name from her band.
If that's confusing. Dude takes a girl with a band, creates a faux personality for her under the name of her band, Mars Argo. He mistreats her, she leaves, and he finds another girl, reuses the personality, harming Mars from continuing to use the persona, which harms her band.
She's suing for him stealing the idea that they co-opted (and abusing her) and suing Poppy for knowing the situation and being complicit.
-
@xaade I'm sure that would make sense if we plotted it out in a UML diagram or something… ;)

Status: Wondering why Visual Studio has suddenly stopped breakpointing on un-caught exceptions...
-
@tsaukpaetra It's caught by the ASP.NET last chance exception handler, therefore it doesn't count as uncaught. Been bit by that WAYY too much.
You might be able to BP in the
Application_Error
event handler instead and work with stuff there, though the stack will have turned into string-only kibble by that point.
-
@twelvebaud I always write a line like
var poop=1;
and put the breakpoint on it. It has to run.

Your insurance company WILL lowball you and try to pay you too little for the car. Push back on it. It sucks, but that's the game. DO NOT ACCEPT THE FIRST OFFER!
Got their first offer. I'm probably going to accept it. :P
No, I'm serious. So, the KBB prices I was figuring before were "the value of your car"/to sell your car, not to buy an equivalent car. Whoops. The correct range from KBB for my area is about $4500-$6825. The fourteen listings I can find seem to back that up -- they range from $4300-$6000 (couldn't find anything above $6k). Insurance offered about $6200, plus fees and taxes (I'm aware they're required to do this), minus deductible. Seems fair, and I don't see enough value (to me) in arguing for the tippy top of the scale.
They're probably salivating instead over the thought of how much my rate is going to go up in six months. (RIP me.)

I was actually just making a joke. Although I did have Indian food for lunch. But I'm not sure if any of it can really be called curry — some dal-like thing, and paneer something. And no side-effects. Yet.

Status: It's glorious, glorious Friday. I don't know what I'm doing, because our sprint just started yesterday, but I don't care.
Last night I made a new character in Black Desert, and they've improved some things about 22%. The UI is still horrible, but at least it isn't quite as bad. Seems they've rounded out the roster a bit more, too. The male and female punchy classes are both in. Still no male elf, demon child, or dark knight, and still no female berserker, but it seems like they're doing an okay job with it all.
-
@magus Shamus did a review of Black Desert that kind of makes me want to try it again with a non-joke character and see if I can get further than level... 12 or whatever I gave up at because the UI was utter garbage.
Unfortunately, Shamus is also one of those reviewers who doesn't mind garbage UIs (for example he praised Factorio to the moon and back and never once mentioned its garbage UI) so who knows.

I mean, Factorio's UI doesn't strike me as being as bad as you've said, but it certainly isn't great. They're redoing all of it now in preparation for leaving early access, though. Eventually it will probably be worth your time again.

It's the grindiest game ever, and all interaction is server-locked, with even things like knockdown implemented as status effects with server-side timers, despite trying to look like a responsive action game. Those plus the UI make it a hard sell for me.
Having said that, the way you can essentially build a company and hire workers to move resources and craft things for you is really cool. As is the knowledge system, item rental, and general friendship system that affects a large number of the game's NPCs. But almost none of that is explained in the game, and the UI makes it hard to understand by trial and error.
It has positives. It just has some severe negatives.

Status from last night: Determined that the "trial limitation" of Level 35 for Final Fantasy XIV isn't character level but job level (since I had started as an Arcanist (kinda support DPS, leads into Summoner) and got to about Level 22, then switched over to Thaumaturge (straight DPS, leads into Black Mage) and got THAT to around 20, plus ~12 levels in Weaver.
Kinda annoyed that the main story quest gets gated behind some party dungeon content, but it's an MMO, so that's kinda to be expected, I suppose.

At least the gate dungeons are easy on story mode, and there's usually enough players to do them pretty fast.

I suppose that depends on your role and server. I believe I'm on one of the relatively new (and therefore less-full) servers, and the DPS queues were averaging about 12 minutes for both the first and second story dungeons. (I went through the first one, ended up backing out of the queue for the second since it was already getting kinda late and I didn't want to get stuck in there for a while)

12 minutes is pretty fast for DPS across all MMOs I've ever seen...
-
@benjamin-hall Eh. I suppose I'm kinda used to the queues on my WoW server, where even as a DPS, 12 minutes was on the long-ish side (usual DPS queues were ~5 minutes where tank/healer queues were nearly instant)

In GW2, there isn't really a queueing system (it's more like craigslist for dungeon-murderers) but I've never had to wait a significant amount of time for a listing for a dungeon to fill up with players.

I tried FFXIV for a bit and then got seriously annoyed by the storyline. All the characters are either morons, unlikeable or simply whatshisnameagain. There's this point in the main storyline where you're probably supposed to be aghast at the turn of events but I was content with the way things turned out.
Seriously, I get that real "bonding" with NPCs in an MMO is hard to pull of but FFXIV's attempts came off as "tryhard".
-
@e4tmyl33t
Yeah, 12 minutes is really good by FF14 standards - 30+ is what is considered "bad" for DPS queues. Which you'll probably hit with the end of original MSQ dungeons if/when you get to level 49, but that's due to an entirely different reason, soooo.@rhywden said in The Official Status Thread:
