Joys...
So, disabled Azure net monitor whatever service (as far as I can tell it's not being used by us, and nothing in the Azure Portal indicates it even exists, so SPLAT!) and stopped listening to port 3389 on the fucking public internet (whose idea was that?!?!).
Looks like the handles are no longer leaking (though the existing leaked handles of course aren't going anywhere).
Problem... solved?

**grumble** Fucking BSOD. All I was doing was pulling Chrome's scrollbar down with the mouse while doing a code review. And after it was done, it didn't bother rebooting - (I went to lunch)

There are exposed posts.
It's a smartTV, therefore extremely dumb.
There's probably an unsecured web server with username/password root/changeme
Have fun.
I dunno about that one, but I'd bet that there's one for the menu screens, seeing as how they're constantly looking for a server at some particular IP. That could be a fun rainy day project.

Yeah, yeah, EA's a bunch of dicks, I've heard it all from my roommates already. But the sale is insane and my computer can run it at maximum graphics and it's fuckin' Star Wars.

Only $10 per loot box?
Technically, since I got the special edition, $6 for three epic-only loot boxes.

If you leave the window open long enough, the heat death of the universe will cause your apartment to cool down.
Wait, maybe that's too long.

Pulmonary embolism. Basically a blood clot in the lung. We've just heard and she's very shocked and upset. At least we know the reason for the symptoms and she's on the right treatment

I lived in an apartment for a while. One of those older "built in the 70s yo" ones you can see from the DVP just south of the 401.
Pro: I was on the first apartment of the 17th (top) floor. 1701, baby! (Yes, the number sign on the door "accidentally" went missing when I moved out)
Con: I was on the 17th floor of a concrete casket with no airflow and no way to change the baseboard heat settings. Hint: hot air rises. All of it, right into my apartment. 35+C.
You mightbolded text**** be able to get one of those "draft stop" things to put at the base of your apartment door, to block off the positive pressure in the hallway. Then when you open the window, hot air just goes out, and doesn't get replaced.

Status: playing Witcher (the original, 2007 one). Got stuck at the end of Act 1 - there's an absurdly hard fight there. After several failed tries, decided to look up walkthrough. The walkthrough says: "if you didn't spend your skill points like this, you better start over" (obviously I spent them differently). Being a geek that I am, instead of starting over, I found a save editor and reset my skills. But there's a bug in the editor - there are some skills that are granted to you in quests that skip the prerequisite skills, and the editor doesn't let you undo the prerequisite without undoing the other ones too. Being a geek that I am, instead of adding more skill points than I could normally get to work around the issue, I decided to edit the save editor - it was a JAR after all; shouldn't be too hard.
(half an hour later)
I've found two Java decompilers - one that lets you view the source code but not edit it, and another that lets you edit the byte code directly. I went with the latter, until I discovered that it doesn't work. So I'm stuck with two disassemblers that can't edit code. Thankfully, I found a nice series of StackOverflow questions that each had only 20% of the full answer how to do this: you get that decompiler, copy source, save as AttributesPanel.java, edit the relevant part,
javac -classpath TWEditor.jar AttributesPanel.java
and use 7-Zip to put the generated .class file inside the JAR (which crashes 7-Zip, but it's fine). I'd probably be done with starting over by now.

I've had varying experiences with that statement in walkthroughs. It might as well mean "My favoured spec is X spec, when I tried it in Y spec I couldn't do it, hence it can only be done in X spec".

Except you really can't kill that goddamn beast without maxing out Aard. It still took me three tries (there's like 25% stun chance, and stun = instant kill; if you don't hit instant kill, you're gonna have a bad time).

Status: Headphones fell apart yet again, and this time they're not going back together. Time for another game of Find the Only Half Decent Pair of Earbuds in All of Amazon.

@tsaukpaetra People have reached the point where if any software updates, it's 100% negative and Windows 10's fault. Which is exactly the kind of awful behavior that made it important that Win10 doesn't let you stop updating easily.
-
@magus Automatic updates are all fine and dandy if they work. I have a laptop where it's literally impossible to update (tried 10 times already, all 10 end up with hanging after half an hour, at which point I have to hard reset and wait another hour while the changes are being undone), and I'm absolutely mad that there's no way to opt out from this weekly shitshow.
Of course that wouldn't be a problem if Acer hasn't castrated the BIOS and let me disable one of two GPUs for good.

If you're looking for wired ones, these are good enough IMO (and only $2.99)
-
@gąska Yeah, they've been trying to delay updates that cause that kind of weirdness for devices that are that weird, but I suppose they can't keep track of them all. Have you notified Microsoft of the problem?

@timebandit Too late, but I'll bookmark that for next time for sure, thanks.

Which Microsoft - the one that activated my English copy of Windows back when I was in USA, or the one I can actually reach here in Poland? And you think either customer service would disclose the secret of how to stop Windows 10 from updating automatically?
-
@gąska It doesn't matter which one you contact, and you miss the point: If Microsoft knows they have a hardware incompatability (Which presumably they don't, since people keep turning off the telemetry) they'll stop the updates on their side until they get it working probably. They certainly do it with the major updates.
-
@pie_flavor I've found a great solution. I lose earbuds after exactly one use!
Slept in airport terminal with earbuds in. Lost earbuds. Bought new earbuds in terminal. Cursed about satanists selling things in blister packs in airport terminals.
Flew on plane with earbuds in.
Deplaned. Was on vacation for a couple days. Went back to airport. Couldn't locate earbuds. Bought new earbuds in terminal. Bright pink this time, for visibility.
Guess what I can't find?

Has it ever actually happened? Do you have some news article about that? I'd love Microsoft to call back the entire Falls Creators Update, even if just for me.
Mind you, the hardware incompatibility in question is physical damage - so it cannot be fixed by software (unless it learns how to cope with broken hardware, ie. not install graphics drivers).

Yes! They roll out the fall creator's update in phases, as they test compatibility. That's the core of their deployment process now.

I think it should be possible to block windows update servers on the firewall (or block the update-downloading process on the firewall).
There is also a lot of "win 10 updates disabler" software floating around.

Any recommendations of PC-side firewalls that Windows Update cannot bypass? I imagine it can bypass the built-in one quite easily. I could use router-side firewall, but it's a laptop, and I don't want to reconfigure all my friends' routers.
There is also a lot of "win 10 updates disabler" software floating around.
From what I've seen, they can only hide updates that are already known, and if they're known it's too late since Windows already started sucking it down. Or are there programs that actually damage Windows Update's ability to download new updates?
-

You can pay $ for "good" earphones, or $/10 for 10 pairs of "good enough" earphones.
I use these ones (though usually pick them up in the grocery store when they go on sale). They last, I dunno, 6 months-1 year before one of the ears starts to get crackly.

@gąska said in The Official Status Thread:

Anything made by Norton or McAfee. Mind you, that will stop ALL traffic (and possibly all operation of the computer with the CPU bloat).
-

Yes, Windows Update
-
@gąska said in The Official Status Thread:
@magus and I can opt out completely?
- hosts.txt
- Entry for wsus servers all point to a webserver you control instead
- Backwards-engineer the WSUS communication protocol, and Microsoft's private keys
- For every request that gets sent to your server, respond with "No updates available"
For bonus points, see if you can reverse-engineer the code for "No updates ever because your OS isn't supported anymore. Stop checking."
EXTRA bonus points if you can reverse-engineer the code for "Well fuck, we've gone bankrupt. Never contact us for updates ever again."
-

or maybe block everything and whitelist the programs you use.

I know for a fact that it does not bypass Windows Firewall, and you can block inbound/outbound traffic by Windows service.
(I don't know why you'd assume that it tries to bypass firewalls at all. Microsoft is not a malware distributor here.)
