a decent language that wasn't shit
I'm extremely limited in what environment this program runs on. I don't have .Net, no web-like technologies. Hell, the "web service" that's implemented practically bit-bangs on a raw TCP socket.

@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:
don't make a console application
I literally have no use for a GUI of any kind in this application. What would you have me do?
-
@tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:

So change environments. And tell whoever gave you that one, and I quote, "WHAT FUCKING DECADE IS IT WHERE YOU ARE? Hint: the century ticked over almost 20 fucking years ago. Christ man."
-
@tsaukpaetra Look, it's great that you want to live in the 80s, but you can hardly expect Microsoft or anybody else to share your little quirk there. Why not just download a 1988 IDE and you could roll all around in the nostalgia.
-
@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:
So change environments.
I'm stuck on Windows-like until I can get ODBC drivers for SQL Server working correctly in UE4 on Linux (or derivatives). And there's no way in hell I'm installing the full Windows just to run a game server.
@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

I told that to myself and responded to myself: Well what else am I supposed to do? Install Windows 10 on every game server instance we run (which, keep in mind, get stood up and dropped fairly regularly and are expected to boot and be completely ready in five minutes or less)? This is the best compromise I can muster.
@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:
it's great that you want to live in the 80s,
Who said this was my desire? If you can provide me a way to do the following in an executable weighing in at 637 kb, I'm all ears:
- Portable (i.e. no installation of binaries or other supporting software needed)
- Win32 executable capable of running in Windows PE
- "web" server handling HTTP requests and able to respond
- Process launching and monitoring
All in about 1,401 lines of code (excluding headers, because thanks C++), most of that fluff text.
The .Net implementation is only 604 lines, but it does omit lots of fluff because .Net provides a lot of stuff used. Of course, it also adds 460 Mb to the base image because then I'd have to include .Net and I can't be bothered to cherry-pick the DLLs out.
@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

Why would I want to do that when my 2018 IDE does everything I need already?
-
@tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:
full Windows just to run a game server.
Side note: The current game server image including OS, ODBC drivers, the mentioned program that uses C++, and game server files, clocks in at a whopping 997 Mb. So much quicker to provision 1 Gb of disk than it is to OOBE auto-unattend.xml a Windows 10 install and clocking at 19 Gb minimum.
-
@blakeyrat You think console applications are outdated? Christ man.

@anotherusername said in The Official Status Thread:
@tsaukpaetra I think ini files themselves are probably more or less deprecated. Expecting them to support Unicode of any sort is probably expecting too much -- just consider yourself lucky if you can get away with putting UTF-8 byte sequences in and it doesn't munge them up...
Yeah, INI files are shit. Why not use TOML?

STATUS
Since we apparently can't find good programmers or outsourcing partners in Serbia, they have now decided to outsource stuff to a US company.
Outsource. To USA.
Of course, since the USA company comes cheap, they'll just go ahead and outsource it right back to us or India or who knows where. And I'll be at the wrong end of that outsourcing human centipede.
Great.
-
@cartman82 If you can't find good outsourcing partners, but you outsource to Burgerstan and they outsource right back to Serbia, then do you think the quality would increase, or decrease, from where it would be if you had just done the work at your company to begin with?

I expect all of this will turn into an even bigger clusterfuck than it is now.
Of course it would be better if they worked diligently on expending the team, instead of deciding they want to ramp up to 20 developers overnight to deliver 17 huge features in 3 months.
I get the feeling our CEO team, all ex Microsofters, got used to having a huge engineering powerhouse underneath them, that just churns out whatever task you give them. And all the CEO and her ilk had to do was run around and drum up deals and dream up features. Engineering got taken care of automatically.
Things don't work quite like that in the startup world, as they've been learning over this past month.

@blakeyrat You think console applications are outdated? Christ man.
He thinks that every application should have a GUI and be usable by a user whose IQ is in the single digits and thinks "Securely Connected to www.god.com" means he's trading bits with the big man himself.

@pie_flavor I too have heard of using .net core for not-asp.net
The state of documentation for anything developery that touches opensores anything is "if it ain't webby, nobody cares". I was afeared .net would go this way when they announced Core and my fears were realized.
Except Java. Non-web Java documentation is remarkably complete, if only marginally valid English.

If? Given how few tech companies there are in Serbia, it's a very good chance the work will be outsourced RIGHT BACK TO CARTMAN HIMSELF.
-
@lorne-kates Nah, there's bound to be a barn on the edge of town housing all of those developers who didn't get through cartman's mettles doing outsourcing work.

I wonder if I can charge more if I was two levels deep into outsourcing?
I presume my management will pay through the nose, now that they failed to ramp up development gradually.

Is there an implementation in C++ that won't bloat the executable for no reason?
I need to configure a maximum of five values (two in practice). Why go through all this hassle for that?

Status: (Last night) Annoyed that America had twice my tourism despite having close to half my culture, I put my Civ6 game on hold, and went to play more FighterZ, where I was working through the story mode. But I miscalculated, and got all my characters killed and ragequit. So I played MapleStory, which has added another new character with an incredibly detailed story attached and crazy amounts of voice acting. Again.
Why does that game of all games have so much effort put into it? I mean, it isn't even a good game in most ways, but there's stuff to do somehow.
