Status: 3D printer fixed and upgraded with an all-metal hotend that won't melt down. Now I can print some interesting things, like PETG, nylon, PTE/PTU, faux wood, etc. I just finished 3D printing a PETG shot glass to quickly test PETG's food-safe properties. It seems to hold water just fine. Now I guess I need to go out and buy something in the 100-proof range to test it properly.

Ooh! Those are great! Back when I worked at Walmart, I decided to try a taste test with the three different brands of those that they sold: Armour, Libby's, and Walmart's own discount brand, Great Value.
I thought the Armour sausages tasted the best, but they were also the most expensive at 56¢/can.
Libby's was way too salty, but was not all that much cheaper at 54¢/can.
Great Value was almost as good as Armour, and was the cheapest at 48¢/can.

The only time I've made an appointment with a bank is to discuss house financing.
I didn't even know it was possible to make an appointment with a bank. That's what really threw me.
Well when I get my business registration in order (Washington State require businesses sign up with roughly 37 agencies to remain active, and I missed one), I can go to a different bank.
And when I do I'll ask "do you guys take appointments?" and I bet $20 he'll say "for opening an account? Nah. Walk-ins opening accounts is like 90% of what banks do."
This behaviour actually decided at which bank I opened my first own account. The first bank I went to (because it was directly opposite of my university) told me that I'd need to make an appointment.
The next slot would have been one week later.
I thus went to the other bank, which was 300 meters down the street. The desk attendant told me I would have to wait 10 minutes, served me some coffee while I waited and the banker then apologized for making me wait.
Guess which bank I still have an account with?

it acts like a container format for audio except that the audio files are stored separately, and it acts like a codec for video, but each pixel is 15 bits and videos are generally sizes like 80x25. it's weird.
Is that 7 bits for color and 8 for ASCII, or 8 for color and 7 for ASCII?
-
@anotherusername 16 colours use 4 bits foreground and 3 bits background. The 8th bit is for blink.
-
@pleegwat Unless you turn off blink and then you have twice as many background colors.
There wouldn't be much use for a blink bit in a video, though. It's already a time-based format, so you'd just encode a series of on/off pixels to make it blink. And given that it makes pretty heavy use of ASCII...
...actually now that I think of it, the box-drawing characters are used and those are definitely in the extended range. So it must be 7 bits for color and 8 for ASCII.

: Seeing as how the system keeps running perfectly fine I don't think that was a very critical component, Windows. It doesn't do any safety checks to make sure something's still running. If some other process depends on that process, and it doesn't find it, things might crash.
IME, though, it's not usually a warning that it could shut down when that happens, but instead a notification that it will shut down immediately, whether or not it was necessary.

CP437 uses 8 bits, foreground color uses 4, background color uses 3.

@pie_flavor it most certainly does monitor some critical processes, as I've had on at least one occasion killed a system process only to have it pop up something to the effect of "$process has terminated abnormally. The system will restart in: 0:59..." with no option to do anything other than save your work as quickly as possible before it reboots.

@ben_lubar I got really annoyed at Delivery Optimization using all the bandwidth without there being any updates listed, and that's also with me trying to disable as much as I could of it through the UI already. Seriously, what is it downloading when Windows Update doesn't list anything as being available for download?

@ben_lubar That xkcd always amuses me for the reactions it induces in others. The argument from entropy is a very sound one, but some people keep on wanting to add silly substitutions to make something hard to remember anyway.
-
@atazhaia said in The Official Status Thread:

It's downloading lots of things so it can serve them up to other computers. It's doing Delivery Optimization, but for other people and not for you.
-
@dkf Yeah, but my connection is MilwaukeePC atm, so I don't have the download and definitely not upload to spare. Also, it's the only Windows computer on the network so there are no other computers locally to optimize. And I disabled the "BitTorrent" part of the service already, so it only downloads from MS and doesn't upload to the internet. (Although it would be "fun" to see it try and do any meaningful upload with 0.1Mbit/s.)

I always wondered why that wasn't a thing. Everywhere else you can ctrl-click to multi select you can ctrl-click to deselect a selected item. But with Excel, you might be trying to enter a formula that for some reason needs the same cell twice in a row, so of course it doesn't work.
No I haven't been burned by this, why do you ask?
