Status: I opened my laptop, and it began to boot, with a flash of bios before the preparatory dimming of the screen, as the computer scanned for connected devices. The connection tones of the USB devices it found pealed through the office, uncharacteristically failing to be redirected to my headset.
But the screen never lit back up. Indeed, while the monitor on the right showed itself as powered and connected, it never got an image either, and the floating third monitor merely flashed it's disconnection light.
I pulled the Thunderbolt from it's port before putting it back, hoping a simple reconnect would do the trick. Instead, my screen went that infamous color of blue. But... something was off. The aspect ratio was 4:3 on a 16:9 monitor, and looked squashed into that configuration. The only words detailing what went wrong were, in their usual, capitalized nature, "PAGE FAULT IN NON PAGED AREA".
Eventually, the blue fire faded, and my computer returned to it's usual, inert state, before beginning the process again, to slightly more success. A loading screen sat at 100% for five minutes, and soon after another reboot happened, followed by yet another loading screen, and then... normalcy was back.
An hour later, upon brushing my nose with my hand, I was startled by the sudden sight of blood, it's red a stark contrast to the burning blue preceding it. Of course there can be no connection... Of course...
So yeah, it's morning!

Converting the Master Server Client's C++ code into C#
Was surprisingly not very difficult, it helps that I don't have to manually munge the HTTP stream and the process start functionality is much better abstracted.

But, again, it'd be stupid to put a water heater and a HVAC system on the same breaker for various reasons, most important of which is that it'd trip the breaker by accident like 4 times a week.
I think you're right and they might be on the same breaker though. I checked the box and I have one for "furnace", two for "A/C" and everything else is lighting and appliances with no mention of any other heater.
Edit: According to electrical code it looks like the furnace has to be on its own circuit, though. You're not allowed to put a water heater on the same circuit. I can't imagine the wiring's not up to code in an MDU.
That being said, with the furnace off, I just drew a full tub of lovely hot water in one go instead of a disappointing tub of lukewarm water in four tries and forty minutes. So who the fuck knows. I've researched by now and seen so many possible causes that I'm just going to report "not enough hot water" to the property manager, leave out the furnace confounder, and see what they do.

@benjamin-hall Fixed now. Maybe it was because there was a system update that needed to run (but didn't tell me about and didn't install when I shut it down earlier?
I avoid restarting this computer (as in soft reboot, not full shutdown and restart) because it hangs after the OS shuts down and so I have to hold the power button down (turning it all the way off) and then manually reboot it.

This is not a good season for a lack of hot water. Can't even fill a quarter of the tub before it goes lukewarm.
I love my tankless heater. Never runs out of hot water!
Compiled some anecdotal data and it seems to me that I only get any significant volume of hot water when the HVAC is off.
I know nothing about home... stuff... at all, so I really don't understand how those two systems are connected, but that seems to suck.
Are they both natural gas? Might both be sucking on a line that's not big enough for the both of them.

I once lived in an apartment complex where each apartment had a gas water heater. Great, right? Except that the HVAC used hot water from it. Oh, and the water was quite hard. And there was no water softener.

Considering how hard chkdsk hammers the drive it's scanning, and the fact that it's resilvering two of the drives now...

Because apparently I can't read timestamps and assumed it was mmms not hhss...
So..... Why is it taking 80 seconds to launch an unmodded* server?

Status: End of Christmas decorations. End of holiday avatar. Normality restored. Any problems you experience are purely yours now…

Also, this week's moment. Our builds were failing about 95% of the time on Travis despite working pretty reliably the last time anyone paid any proper attention (a couple of weeks before Christmas; we take our seasonal vacation seriously at WTF-U). Some of the time they were failing without any error messages, and sometimes with the fairly cryptic
error: [Errno 11] Resource temporarily unavailable
. It turns out that something in Travis's setup has switched the default setup of stdout so that the OS kernel thinks it is in nonblocking mode; anywrite()
call of a message on stdout that would override the OS's internal buffer doesn't block, but rather fails (with an error code indicating that the process ought to retry). Now in general that's a useful thing to be able to do, since it means that the application can avoid blocking on the descriptor and do something else instead and get a notification later when a write is possible, but the C standard IO implementation really doesn't know much about this sort of thing and gets quite unhappy. And yet it is set by default so any process that happens to produce output just that bit too fast (such as the logging messages the Python package installer writes when setting up our actual testing environment) blows up. But it really depends on how fast everything is read off by the CI environment, so the detonation is non-deterministic. Just what you want in a testing system! Also, this is very much not a configuration that people expect. And this is all a change parachuted in on us just before Christmas.
Also, for some reason it is possible for a parent process to see the changes to the
O_NONBLOCK
flag set by a child process. Given the nature of the way this changes how particularly file write semantics works (the reading sides of most processes tend to be less fragile) that's quite “surprising”.

I hate that. I change the default to not enable "Quick Edit mode" on every personal machine.

I is the dumb, apparently when I attempted to modify the existing XBox 360 activity to use the XBone instead of the 360, it instead just renamed it. Creating a new activity from scratch worked. Of course, for some reason Logitech couldn't figure out how to tell their software how to map the buttons (thank goodness they actually had them at least) to xbox commands, but that was easy enough to rectify.

Probably will be. Amazon Logistics is their last-mile service so they don't really need to figure out shipping details until they're right on top of the delivery date. They must already have everything ready in a warehouse near you.

I'd suggest not doing that so close to the pile of firewood and the wooden fence, but I don't generally burn things, so that's just my uninformed opinion.
