status Came in to find my Mac powered down. Power-up. "Finishing updates...." (yeah, it never told me) Well fuck. At least Windows reboots the machine so it's running in the morning.

Also, apparently Windows' "Night Light" feature is controlled by explorer.exe, and killing it will instantly revert you to normal un-red display...
One word: Windows Update.

@Tsaukpaetra it's so convenient to have all services listed as svchost.exe

Yeah. I had to check the commandline to make sure something wasn't running away again...

You can right-click and "Go to Service(s)" if you want to know which services are running in that process. And if that's not good enough, you can force it to run each of them in a separate process.

@Tsaukpaetra That's because they don't want you to click that button.
There are supposed to be more buttons in the middle.

Status: Due to unforeseen consequences, the Dev site is tracking 21,640 tokens. 21,612 of which have technically expired and should have been erased, but due to poor assumptions (the clients are using the tokens like one-time-use, so never ever re-use said token to have it checked for expiration) are still there.
Whoops.

@mods we're being flooded with spam!

@wharrgarbl That's what flags are actually for. I banned him.
-
@Yamikuronue since flags are so annoying to manage I assumed a notification would be good enough

Everyone knows the best way to discreetly post spam links is to alert as many members of the forum as possible and post the links in the most popular thread on the forum. No way the mods will ever find it!

You realize this is just Windows 10 Server, right? What did you expect?

I expected them to realize that servers should not just reboot at random times and put in an easy way to disable that "feature" for sysadmins. As it is I have to go wading through local group policy, which is annoying.
But yes, I should have known that they would do something retarded like that.
I have to say though, clients who are on Windows 10 don't have any more tickets where you login to the machine and check the uptime and it is at 60+ days and a reboot fixes the issue. So, that is a bonus. But this is retarded on a server OS.
-
@Polygeekery Windows servers outside a central management context are so vanishingly rare that it makes no sense to write special code and add an attack surface just so you can easily control updates outside the traditional management mechanism.
I'm honestly surprised a non-domain server is still a supported configuration.

Uh, FWIW on default settings I haven't had Server 16 reboot on me yet. It gives me a "update pls" nagscreen every time I log on, but it hasn't forced a reboot. It's been a while too - I know because I've got VMs on there that will cry bloody murder if they go down for 5ms.

Oh not while they're down of course. But they'll trigger downtime detection and email me when they come back...

The group policy editor is the “easy way” of doing that.

Hmm, not so sure about that. Most of the dedicated Windows servers our hosting company provides would fall into that description. Actually, from both our hosting companies. (We have a US and UK host)

Set a bandwidth cap. It really does respect those. I keep it limited to 10MB/s at home so it doesn't interfere with anyone else's HD video streaming.
