drift velocity of electrons in a current-carrying wire was either ~10^-34 m/s or ~10^20 m/s
Either around 6 Planck lengths per second… or hyperluminal? Well, at least the first one is technically physically possible, though I have no idea how you'd ever measure it…
Yeah. I had given them Avogadro's number (6.02e23) as a red herring--some of them took it seriously and either multiplied by it (resulting in the 1e20 number) or made more mistakes and divided by it (getting the 1e-34 number).
That's a really common issue--thinking that all the numbers given are needed (instead of actually knowing what you're doing).
I made the mistake of exchanging the denomination for Newton's Gravitational Constant from a γ for a G. Guess what happened when I asked them to calculate the gravitational force the Moon exerts on a given body?
Hint: Gravitational constant and gravitational force both begin with a "g".
Oops. In the US, we use "G" for Newton's constant and "g" for the free-fall acceleration. Forces are denoted with F + subscripts (lowercase f is reserved for friction in most high-school-level material)
Yeah. I also told another course that from now on I'll use a "W" for energy because otherwise it might be easily confused for the Electric Field.
Much consternation this caused.
I warn them that everything is overloaded. We use
E
for both energy and electric field (except at higher levels whereD
is used for the field).W
is for work.I also tell chemistry classes that all the elements where the symbol and the element name don't match were probably discovered by Germans. Wolframium is a prime example.

Funny. I tell them that everything where symbol and proper name don't match were probably named by an English speaking person!
Except for the trolls who used Latin. We don't speak of those.

@benjamin-hall Works on My Machine™. You probably have memegenerator.net blocked.
Either way, I edited the post to host it in the forum. That's another 285KB of data that will have to be stored in the database forever. I hope you're happy.
-
@magus Meanwhile, I use the alarm in Windows 10 Desktop.
Which works great except when it updates in the night.
Of course, with the new resume your apps before you log in thing the other thread is complaining about, this might be fixed

I assume it's stored on the file system, as using the database for those blobs would be really ineff--
-- oh, wait, it's . Never mind.
-
@weng That and, the update time isn't random. You can tell it when you'd like it to be. On a home PC, 9AM on weekdays sounds like a good time for it.

@heterodox Anything that stores data is a database to me.

Status: Because I was trying to kill our app earlier, and had something vaguely related to work on, I may have sent too much data to our app all at once and broken things, when I wasn't even trying to.

@timebandit Fine:
any structured collection of data, designed for fast access to specific individual elements, stored in an unstructured physical storage system is a database to me.
-
@anonymous234 Phones these days have big screens, haven't you noticed?
-
@anonymous234 Regular databases are pretty structured. I dunno how you'd have have one without structured storage.

Some databases keep their blobs directly in the filesystem, IIRC.
-
@pie_flavor The data is structured. The physical storage system is unstructured.
i.e. hard drives don't manage files or records, they manage (big chunks of) raw meaningless bytes

I'm in very annoying state of feeling that I want to do something, but at the same time I want to do nothing...
You want to be the type of person that does things but you don't want to actually do things. I get ya.
Not exactly.
It's more like I actually want to do something, but my body tells me I am too exhausted to do anything.

Well, if we had such a trophy, I would have won it today. FWIW, 15 minutes before you plan to leave in the evening is a bad time to break the build. :(

Status: Just found the HCF command for the hardware I'm working on
The Bluetooth connection was being erratic so I suspected my Android app but couldn't work out what was going on, called the hardware designer in:
I'm having connection issues with the [thingy], have you changed the code?
Nope, haven't touched it in weeks. I'll reset it.
Try connecting now.
I see it announcing but the UART isn't coming up...wait, do you smell something?
It's a typical prototype with mods hanging off everywhere, think it's time to make a new one. Or find some of this to put back in:

STATUS: After a day off post-work trip I am back at work. With a cold, just like last time. At least I think I can handle this without needing a couple sick days like last time, as yesterday I cleared the driveway from show while the cold was worse and I came out fine today anyway. Still planning to go home early, though, for that extra rest and because tomorrow is the hellish full schedule day.
Also, have begun to get my new place in order. Yesterday I replaced all broken lightbulbs so I got light in every room, and a porchlight. I also discovered the nice electrical hazard in the second bedroom, where the connecting wires to the lamp was bare because the old tape they had used as insulator had crumbled away. May need to apply new tape there. Kitchen 75% done, bedroom 50% done this far. Will need to wait until next tuesday for a new fridge/freezer before I can start using the kitchen properly, though.

Not feeling I wanted to move to my bed. But if someone moved a sleeping mat near me, I may just lay down there...or not. I don't know. :O

Splitting my time equally between a silly, overengineered system to anonymise data in a test database, and attempting to fill out my end of year review form. What is my progress towards Living the Company Values?
