Status: I learned Python 10 minutes ago and I already hate it. Specifically, I hate list comprehension syntax - not only is it backwards (
i*2 for i in x
- first usei
, then define it), but with more complicated stuff it gets its backwardness backwards (i*j for i in range(x) for j in range(i, x)
- at first it looks like nested list comprehension, but actually it's a single multiclause statement as evident in that the firstfor...in
cannot use what's defined in second, but second can use the first. Took me a while to figure this one out).
-
Also. What's the standard way of dealing with insanely long list comprehension expressions?

Gut reaction is "don't" but that's probably not an option for you...
-
@tsaukpaetra it would be an option if there was alternative syntax to efficiently construct a list without using intermediate lists.
Also. I heard that in Python, everything is an object - even more so than in Java. If so, how do I assign generator expression to a variable? The obvious way is invalid syntax.

Is this what you want?
gen = ( i * 2 for i in range(10) ) for i in gen: print(i)

If it make you feel better, I suppose it is inspired in the classical notation for sets in maths: { x: ...}

Yes, that's exactly what I want. Thanks!
Now, if there was a way to late-bind variables used by these...
I believe I've been spoiled by functional languages.

this ?
def gimme_gen(a): gen = (i * 2 for i in range(a)) return gen one_gen = gimme_gen(5) for i in one_gen: print(i)

Try not to write them. ;) If you've got something that long, it'll be incomprehensible to you in a few months. If I've got something that would be crazy long like that, I write a full generator function/method (
yield
ing the values) precisely so that I can also give everything clear names. Short code is all very well… but understandable code is more important.def gimme_gen(limit): for x in range(limit): # NB: use xrange() in Python 2 yield x * 2
Not sure I'd bother with that stuff in an example this simple, but for things of real complexity it's much better to do it this way.

There is still
map
(beware: its lazy), and things like 'partial' in the functools module.
-
@adynathos cool, thanks!

Morrowind

You'll want this.
Enable widescreen and UI scale (175% works good). You can enable other shader effects if you want, but I like to keep the rendering vanilla.
Oblivion runs... ok on modern machines. At least you don't need a microscope to read the UI.
-
@blakeyrat Thanks. Morrowind itself is still sitting in my download queue, but the mod download is in progress — sorta.

Worse. The world's second-worst public WiFi. (The worst, in my experience, is the Evergreen branch of the Everett Public Library.)

Why don't you just turn on your phone's internet sharing for an hour? I mean, sure everybody's cheap, but come on.

Perpetual maintenance for a one-time problem? No thanks. Literally the first time in years we've had an issue.
-
@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

That might potentially be feasible for Morrowind, but downloading Oblivion (which is what is currently downloading; Morrowind is queued) would exceed my phone's monthly data limit.
-
@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

EDIT: also why are you playing the games out of order? Hell, go all out: you could download Arena in like 5 minutes on ANY internet connection known to man.
-
@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

When I was given a Steam gift card, I knew of Skyrim's good reputation, but didn't really know anything about the other games in the series; also, I think it was on sale at the time.
I bought Morrowind and Oblivion yesterday, because they're on sale. (I'm downloading Oblivion before Morrowind just because that's the order Steam decided to queue them; doesn't mean that's the order I intend to play them.)
I didn't get Arena because it doesn't seem to be on Steam — that I can find, anyway — but I have now downloaded it directly from Bethesda; thanks.
I don't see Daggerfall on either Steam or direct from Bethesda. Eventually I'll poke around and see if Humble or GOG have it, but it doesn't seem to have been mentioned in any of the hundreds of emails they've sent me. But not tonight.It is available for download on Bethesda's site, but for some reason it's not linked from their Elder Scrolls page. Download in progress.
-
-
@blakeyrat Will watch later. Right now, trying to watch a video doesn't leave enough bandwidth for the download to make any progress. FWIW, everything except Morrowind is done downloading.

Yeah, sorry, but those are snake oil.
-
@hardwaregeek bear in mind that the default Dosbox settings for arena make it run slower than a milwaukee pc download. You'll want to mess with the memory to make it playable
-

Snakes (in non-oil form) are also useful for pest control.

Yeah, I noticed that. I tried Ctrl+F12 a bunch of times, which helped, but I think I need to do it a bunch more times. I'll look at other settings, too. My biggest problem was that my mouse wasn't acting the way I expected it to, specifically that I couldn't get a spell to actually cast at the thing attacking me. (I think the problem may have been that the goblin was too close; moving the mouse to try to aim at it, the X turned into a navigation arrow before I could aim at the blasted thing.) Watching @blakeyrat's LP was helpful for general gameplay, but since he was playing a fighter and I was playing a (thus far) weaponless mage, I haven't yet seen an example of how spellcasting is supposed to work. But at least I have an idea of what I was doing wrong, and I'll try again later.
-
@hardwaregeek FYI I was using the Gog.com copy, that comes with a pre-tuned DOSBox, so I didn't have to tinker with anything except the window size.
-
@blakeyrat Evidently they didn't pre-tune it correctly, seeing as you couldn't play it on max graphics.

Status: Have kind of given up on my cheap 3D printer - I simply cannot get the z-axis to work as this cheap kit obviously had ridiculously large tolerances which lead to the axis becoming misaligned / stuck. Exemplary picture follows:

I'll probably get myself an "Original" Prusa i3 Mark 3. Just have to wait a bit, the new Mark 3 won't be available for new orders until January.
Also, the advertised array of sensors should prevent any of those headaches I'm having with the current printer I have.

STATUS: My fastfood misadventures continues. I thought the bag I got from McD was a bit too light and I was right; they'd forgot to give me my fries. Oh, well. Pop in later in the evening on the way back and I got the fries and a complimentary McFlurry.
Also, a friend spamming me with Oasis/Gallagher brothers finally paid off I guess. Gave them some more listening to and figured The Masterplan is the best Oasis song. It also made me remember how everywhere britpop was for a while. Also, it made me realize how shite the speakers on the iPad 5 is (been using it as a music player during the day).
In other news: yesterday all my belongings were moved from my apartment to my house. I do not understand how I could have so much stuff to be moved. I even threw away 6 binbags full of old shite, as well as my old bookshelves (except for the newest one). Today I was cleaning out my old apartment. Done with 5 rooms, just the bathroom left. 4 rooms I got done with in ~2.5 hours, the rest of the day has been the kitchen and half bathroom.
Yesterday I also noticed my phoneline is airborne the last bit to my house. Internet through ADSL will be fun until I can get fiber installed~

Oh yeah, I excavated an area about 1'x3'x3' yesterday. It's amazing how much stuff can fit in such a small area.
-
@tsaukpaetra I am now in a weird situation of having a lot more room for stuff (larger place including plenty storage areas) while otoh finally managed to drop my hoarder mentality so I don't want to have things "just because".

I'm spelling on that myself. There's a reason I'm really good at compressing things...
-
@tsaukpaetra I'm hoping to clear out some more stuff post-move as I can see more of my actual need once I'm getting everything put up. A few things were carried over just because I couldn't be sure if they were needed.
