our annual Chrismas Chore
I kinda thought about coming, but they scheduled it on my birthday, so I decided to fuck that noise, I'm a mere trainee anyway.
From what I've heard the next day, and from the number of hungover people at work, it wasn't much of a loss.
Status: at family's, feeling a bit under the weather, so I told Mom to pick up some meds on her way from work.
She comes back with a bunch of homeopathic pills. She also works at a hospital.

Have you checked your TCP/IP settings?
Probably needs to update autoexec.bat with the right high memory drivers.

She may be trying to tell you something.

What?

Tell her that alternative medicine is an oxymoron, if alternative medicine works it is just called medicine...

Actually, I've heard that Oxymoron is good shit, if you can get your hands on some, but doctors are getting wise to it, so they'll probably try to fob you off with some Tylenol instead...

update autoexec.bat with the right high memory drivers
Sure you didn't do that with config.sys ...
Oh here we go:
DEVICE=C:\Windows\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\Windows\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
FILES=30
STACKS=0,0
BUFFERS=20
DEVICEHIGH=C:\Windows\COMMAND\ANSI.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\MTMCDAI.SYS /D:123And your autoexec.bat would have these:
@echo off
SET SOUND=C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6
SET PATH=C:\Windows;C:\
LH C:\Windows\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:123Welcome to the old fart's computer club if you remember that stuff.
Ooh those child hood days where you where considered a wiz because you could change the path or the look of the dos cursor.

Actually, that's what I was trying to think of. Thanks.
But the whiskey kept getting in the way so I went with what I had.

The two that charged used those, with 8-char random alnum (9 chars counting the non-random "-" in the middle) login keys good for 24 hours. The one what was free had the WPA(?) key printed in the in-room guest information book.
The one I was in in November (in Portland, OR) told me the free wifi login details (for their captive page) when I checked in. Bandwidth was acceptable, latency a bit high for my taste.
OK, I'm spoiled by my work and my home both having great internet.

Those brought back some memories. I remember being very pleased with my machine at the time because I managed to get virtually all my drivers and support TSRs into himem, which let me run virtually all the games of the time immediately without having to do tricks. (I also remember having a music player which would go high, so I could play nice ripped tunes at the same time as playing Civilization, instead of the default game music which only used the most basic sound card features.)

Thanks Steam, I always wanted one of these!

i imagine that's going to be a very short list.
-
Not much shorter than the lists for most other times.
-
Would be longer here.

you're generous.
my criteria for determining if you can talk to me at 0100 is:
- Am I literally on fire?
- Is condition #1 likely to occur before i wake should you fail to talk to me?
- Are you literally on fire?
- Will lives literally be snuffed out before their time as a direct result of you failing to talk to me now and not when i wake?
- (this is not an exhaustive list, but you get the idea by now)
If you truthfully answered yes to any of the above questions then you may talk to me at 0100
-
Depends on whose 1AM it is, though ...
Or do you mean UTC?
-
My 0100, so UTC-0500 (currently)

Dark.

Dark.
My alarm is generally set for 0530. For a short interval during the summer, it is not dark at 0530. These few days are the only ones with a high probability of my actually dragging my butt out of bed promptly when the alarm goes off.

I've sent you plenty of messages at 0100 your time. Then again, it's a much more lenient method of communication.

False dawn?

Northern latitude. Sun rises at ~0510 PDT on the summer solstice. It might even be sufficiently not-cloudy to see it.

Adjusting to life at the 32-33 degree latitude has taken a while.

I grew up about 34° N. 48° N is nice during the summer, but not so much the rest of the year.

Yes you have. How many have I answered before 0615 my time?
😝

Wrong!

I did eventually answer them.
Even if it took me like a week to answer the first batch.

04:35 round here. Thank goodness for DST, though double DST would be nicer still (more light in the evening).
I hate winter.

No snow here but I misjudged the state of the junction onto the road our office is on, and may have ended up half sliding round it.

But how did the person who made that not get the idea that he might be doing it wrong?

urgh, could you purge that?
