Status: Back from a concert. String quartet. Nice, especially as I didn't know the pieces being played.

Alright, I can be satisfied with that.

@dkf Too poncy for me but I glad you enjoyed some proper music.

Yeah, I think pets do need a pet passport. Also don't fuck birds, that's illegal in most of the member states.

Can't. The system has literally abandoned that device and I don't know how to re-connect it without rebooting. Whelp, guess I'll just have to wait for 5 hours...
Hardware-wise, SATA is hot-pluggable. You could disconnect it for a while and reconnect it.
Not sure if that would helpUnless your controller is a dick. Which used to be common. Unsure about now.
So the disk itself was what tripped over itself. I disconnected and reconnected it, and it was still frozen (probably the disk controller on the device just got stuck). Power cycled it (by means of unplug and replug the power cable) and
BAM!
Instant connection!I'm going to assume then that power issues are the name of the game, as there are (at present) only two power cables supporting 7 drives.

Well I'm MAD. The added power cable just fried all the drives it was connected to. Spectacular Magic Smoke event.
Luckily it was only an unused data drive, the OS drive.... FUCK!

If multiple personalities were working, you shouldn't be aware of other personalities....

Heh. No. The only fix is replacement. Really.
Even leaving aside the fact that you've had a Magic Smoke incident since, the failure mode I observed was that power cycling the disk would bring it back online for a few hours (usually 1β4, occasionally less) and then it would stick again. I think the problem is that the firmware detects a hardware fault and flips to RO mode, and this is exacerbated by Windows caching (with the same hardware on Linux, you find out about the problem sooner; it's a blessing of sorts, since it stops you from wasting time doing stuff that won't be saved).

What? I think you're combining two different situations. My laptop is the one with the read -only SSD, the smoking drive incident was on the company server.
If the server drives were flipping to RO mode, why would the error be (effectively) "timeout reading"? That doesn't make much sense...
I would definitely agree that Windows caching did hide the problem somewhat with my laptop, as it was caching the file tables but reading from the disk normally. Well, as normally as possible, since the SSD still reports everything's OK.

Exactly! It's total garbage that I'm wishing I would have tested more thoroughly.
Then again, said thing could be said of these new server-grade drives that seem to like outlining themselves...

Replace the SSD
Alright! Back to the laptop, installed Windows and doing the write test. So far so good.
Averaging 120 MB/s write. Kinda weird why it's fluctuating like that.
For records the dead SSD is pictured. Looks legit, but in device manager it doesn't report itself being a patriot device, whereas at least this sandisk replacement does.
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:

Increasing the poll rate in Task Manager.
. What is going on? Does the fact that it's an SSD mean it can't support sustained data transfer?

@Tsaukpaetra How long are those drops? If short, that's normal and I wouldn't worry about it. I've seen it on disk, network, whatever. Could be cache drainage, could be Windows Defender, could be (since this is a new machine) any one of various maintenance/update tasks stealing some scheduling time here and there... It's one of those "little things" that you focus on to your peril.

It consistently drops to a few mbps for four seconds almost like clockwork for the last 1.5 hours I've been running the test. I could probably measure it as a function generator it's so consistent....

Well the test succeeded. And trimming the whole disk to empty it took a reasonable amount of time (instead of instantaneously on the broken device).
I have much confidence now!

Well so far Chrome installed fine.
Found out that Microsoft magically got WiDi working on my laptop.
Fun think happened though, I happened to touch my screen on it and this happened:
First off.... What? Second... Wat?
What does it mean, "go back to your PC"? I'm sitting right here in front of it!
What does it mean "the check box", that doesn't sound like a valid object in the Action Center (I'm assuming the quick actions in the Notification Center is what they're actually talking about).Good grief.

IT'S SECURE BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO USE IT IN PERSON
Okay, so can I use a four digit PIN? Nobody's going to try hundreds of combinations in person.
NO THAT WOULD BE INSECURE IT NEEDS TO BE SIX DIGITS BECAUSE COMPUTERS CAN'T TRY MORE THAN 999999 NUMBERS EVER

Which is funny, because I'm pretty dam sure that PIN is only used on the lock screen, and (besides using an emulated keyboard like a rubber ducky) computers can't poke input at that.
Not to mention that I think it still triggers the lockout policies upon too many invalid attempts, so this would be futile at best....

But that's a different pin, actually, otherwise that would obviate the pin on the lockscreen.

@Tsaukpaetra Sounds like a good name for a metal band tbh.

@Mikael_Svahnberg It died too. Honestly though cockroaches freak me out.

Gotta clean down some of the production database. Got bored while working over the weekend and decided to use images of Hitler, Stalin, Marlyn Manson, Kim Jong etc etc.

@lucas1 roach baits work better. With spray cans you only kill the ones you see.
With baits it takes a week to eliminate them, but then I get months without seeing those little monsters around.
