She's going to be one of those anyway. Her external examiner for her PhD decided to hire her. :) Still, it would be nice if she was also Not Dead.

Yup. Terabyte ones, too, if you have more money than sense.
This one's a Patriot, because it was on sale for about $50 less than the Samsungs, and has a $30 MIR if I bother to fill it out.
Different chip bit density probably, or different number of dies in each package. Looks like 4 packages.
Motherboard's got a second port, too.
-
@FrostCat You mean 480 GB, right?

@XanderTheGamer LOL. Oh. Yeah.

I've got plenty of sense.
-
@FrostCat nope, it was open ended in terms of funding (as in, it could go over the $50k figure without any issues) but it has closed as per the page.
This campaign has ended and will receive all funds raised.
I'm just amazed it wasn't closed by now.
-
@FrostCat I have the previous model. Very happy with it apart from the fact that it used to be silent in normal usage and now it's slightly audible.
One day I'll try and see what might have changed.

As amazed as you were by the fact that 5 people gave him money? And one gave $20?
-
@coldandtired said in The Official Status Thread:

This one was a bit more, but the reviews said the eDRAM made a big difference in gaming. I probably wouldn't want to do heavy FPS with high graphics but it works quite well for what I am using it for so far. And even with a game running the fan is just barely audible over the game's audio. You can hear it, that is, but it's not screaming.

As I mentioned further down the same comment I am TR here. This is a Linux machine , GC is GeForce GT 730 but it does not matter anymore, does it?
I have to try the very latest kernel, it might have a fix, but since I am in the middle of a project (and am lazy nowadays) I have not done that.

Writing shaders and/or CUDA programs will do that occasionally. Had a very buggy shader that did this last Tuesday - hardlock to the point where the mouse cursor doesn't move (and, no, didn't respond on SSH either). Fortunately, modern computers boot really fast (but it's still not going to be a fun day).

CUDA even on Linux needs Nvidia drivers! fuck Nvidia. Is it possible to use OpenCL with nouveau? perhaps not.

Status: So I'm playing some Guild Wars 2 and @blakeyrat starts watching me on Steam. Like 15 seconds later, a little red box appears in the lower right of my screen saying that Steam stopped the stream because I fell too far behind in the upload.
Right now, the only two people who are in this building are me and my mom. I check Task Manager and it says I'm using about 20kbps combined up and down. I go upstairs and check with my mom and her laptop is turned off and she's watching over-the-air broadcast television.
Then I go to my dad's bedroom. His laptop is on, uploading 50GB of flight simulator texture packs he downloaded to Carbonite over our 1.5Mbps upload connection. I open Google Chrome and search "carbonite throttle bandwidth". It goes to Yahoo. I close the tab and go to settings. The search engine is set to "Secure Search". I switch it to Google and delete "Secure Search". My dad has complained about his search engine being forced to Yahoo in the past. Why does "Secure Search" keep showing up?
I search again. Again, it goes directly to Yahoo. I check and Google is still the default search engine.
I go to chrome://extensions. His only plugin is McAfee Safe Browsing. I disable it. I search again. It goes to Google.
Turns out all the problems my dad is having with computers are because of services he purchased.
Edit: Also it's apparently impossible to throttle Carbonite, and they claim that that's a "feature".

Found out that the most clicked game on my android gaming site is "Stellaren 2", and I suspect it's because the screenshots show a girl.

They're level 35 rares which are somehow still better than the armor he can buy from vendors at level 50.

Status: For many years now I have been grilling on a Char-Griller grill. They work great for direct grilling, are OK for indirect grilling, and absolute shit for smoking something. So, I also have a large upright offset cabinet smoker that I use once or twice a year.
Tonight the wife says that my grill is starting to look a little shabby. I point out that there is not really anything that can be done about it. Not like I can paint it or anything. I also say that at some point in the future I will probably replace it with a KitchenAid charcoal grill built in to an outdoor cooking island and get a Weber Smoky Mountain for smoking meat.
"Why don't you just get one of those Big Green Egg things? They do grilling and smoking, right? Then you wouldn't need two things, when you only use one of them a few times a year.""Seems like a plan to me. I will go take a look this weekend."
This is one of those times where it is easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission, when I spend $1,000 on a grill. It was her idea after all...Update: Last weekend I went to a local hardware store chain that I know the owner of, and that carries Big Green Eggs and other grills, etc. The wife and I go in, and she is OK with me buying a BGE, even after I told her the price.
Then I got to talking to the owner of the store. I tell him I want to build an outdoor cooking island, what I like to cook, etc. Before all is said and done, we work out a trade for two grills to replace the two that I had. I had something he wanted that I had spent ~$150 on. He has two open box grills that he literally cannot sell. Trading is not selling, right? Right.
So I walked away with a Char-Griller Akorn Kamado and a Camp Chef pellet grill.
I am now light one firearm, heavy two grills. And these grills are fucking amazing. The old grill was OK all-around. The kamado grill does high heat like a fucking champ, and will do low and slow cooking pretty well. The pellet grill is computer controlled to hold whatever temperature you set it at so it will do low heat like a champ, and good all the way up to medium heats. I did the jerk chicken I talked about in the food thread and it was effortless. I set the controller to high smoke for ~35 minutes to smoke the chicken, then turned the knob to 350F to finish it off. Pellet grills are like ovens that belch out wood smoke.

Old windows did. It's unfair how snappy old windows feels, even on older hardware. No background processing, indexing or anything. 15 sec to boot and it's fucking ready to go.

Heh, looks like I booted this just in time, the KMS license would have expired Aug 10.
Now, every now and then when switching between windows these little tooltip things (I assume from Windows) keep popping up about taking screenshots and showing some kind of timer bar. Oh well, that one little tooltip isn't going to get me to memorize it so since I don't need to do it now, I probably won't do it later on...
Strange, doing an offline scan of the hard drive I'm assuming is going bad resulted in this from HDDTune:
Am I mistaken or is that not a fairly typical result? There aren't any pending reallocations or reallocated sectors...
For comparison I did another test off of a USB 3.0-connected disk as well, and it seems to perform about the same as well...
Maybe I do tricky partitioning to keep the OS on the "fast" portion of the platters? I thought we were past this cruft. Maybe I should go SSD all the way...

@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:

The only spinning discs I have around is for games, media and video files. Can recommend. Even 512 gb drives are fairly cheap now.

SSDs are pretty cheap now. There is really no reason to not put your OS and applications on them.
