Why are you not just turning off notifications? You only have to do that once.

@clippy We were talking about IoT stuff. "The internet" is what's in range. Because, like auto makers, IoT people haven't seemed to have thought about security at all for the most part. It's like they didn't see the Battlestar Galactica miniseries!

@Onyx All I can say is well done. I'm had an elliptic fit watching the trailer.

Good headline:
Republicans Left Wondering If Donald Trump Will Kill The Party Or Just Maim It
It's been a looooong time since Abraham Lincoln, guys.
-
@blakeyrat Which makes you wonder how someone the head of the FBI says committed crimes will affect the other party. Oh wait, that's just business as usual.
-
@blakeyrat If he use the power of truth he can chop it down in a single swing, like Lincoln?

@Magus As the article says:
“Whatever Hillary Clinton’s faults, she’s not ignorant or hateful or a nut,” wrote Mark Salter, who was a senior strategist to Arizona Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign. “She acts like an adult, and understands the responsibilities of an American president.”

RAID 5 and transactional databases shouldn't mix.
Why would we be putting live databases on the NAS? That's for bulk data storage (of scientific data in our case, so it's large, binary and — unfortunately — very proprietary), which doesn't really need to be transactional.
DB backups OTOH…
-
@dkf said in The Official Status Thread:

I dunno, but you shouldn't be. I did say "occupational hazard". Guess I should've said "knee-jerk response", although in this case it's the same thing.
I've seen a 20GB[1] transactional database get moved from (part of) a 30-disk RAID 5 SAN to a mirrored pair of disks and not slow down.
[1] I know that's not huge but it's plenty large enough for certain classes of problems to become apparent.

In my city this usually means the cross-traffic simply decided to continue going even though their light was red.
No, the cross-street wasn't congested. The problem was simply that, for some reason, my street was so congested that whatever space on the far side of the intersection that might have been made available by traffic inching forward was filled by people turning from the cross-street onto my street. The intersection wasn't obstructed, which would be illegal; there was simply no space for cars on my street to proceed (without obstructing the intersection).
-
@FrostCat said in The Official Status Thread:

I know not to put databases on remote filesystems. At least not unless there's a dedicated network channel, so fancy-pants SAN stuff. My budget doesn't run to that sort of thing, but neither does the size of my databases. (They'd only be a problem if we started pitching all our 200GB datasets into BLOB columns, but whywouldIdothat?!)

That's called "rush hour" at a couple of intersections where I work.

Ugh. You're over-analyzing the joke.

I had an opportunity for so I seized it!
-
That's called "rush hour" at a couple of intersections where I work.
Yeah, but it's atypical in the suburban area where I work. There are only about 4 roads to get in or put of the busy (light) industrial area, so those roads are pretty congested during rush hour, but not like this.
Without traffic, it takes me about 5 minutes to get to work. If I leave before 08:30, it takes about 15. Between 08:30 and 10:00, it takes about 30. This morning it took >60.

:Status FFS now how am I supposed to compete?!
People must be grinding something serious (somehow) or spending money to claim these Towers .

Status: Trilead's excellent desktop free edition VM backup software forced itself to upgrade to some useless HP thing that requires a web server and is now completely useless for my needs. Even worse, the uninstaller no longer has a feedback form.
And the old version refuses to run without updating first, so I can't just use the old version that was awesome.
It appears that the only decent free VMware backup suite no longer exists thanks to HP.

After 2k+ games I've learned there are a lot of genres I have zero interest in... many of which are rated Overwhelmingly Positive while I see no possible way to have fun in them... is something wrong with me?

Last time I went queue spelunking, I discovered there are about 700 worthless Minecraft clones Steam really wanted me to see, as well as about 200 survival-with-dinosaurs games. The only redeeming thing from that day was that I discovered "Mount Your Friends". NSFW but worth a lookup just for the utter hilarity.

I'm sure if they removed "Breast PhysX" it would totally be SFW.

Yes.
But it has nothing to do with game genres.
All JRPGs are shit. There's probably 1944 of those on Steam. So you're right on par.

There were no breasts, unfortunately. Just penises. Barely-covered, wildly-swinging physics-enabled cartoon penises.

QFT. And also roguelikes are popular now, all of which except Rogue Legacy and 20XX being ones I despise. I like Battletoads hard, not 'lol, too bad, you rolled a 1' hard.
-
@Magus FTL is one of those "90% of generated games can't be won no matter what you do" games. It was still kind of fun to play, but... yeah. I lost at the final boss like 5 times and I was like, "ok I figured out the game, I'm done."

If you're feeling especially robust, you could reverse-engineer the version-checker's server-side and send a "nope, no updates, everything's fine where you are" message.

You remember back in the 80's, when developers could barely fit a bunch of levels into a cartridge so they were making them really hard and forced you to replay the same sections over and over in order to squeeze more than an hour's worth of playability?
It's 30 years later now, and gamedev apparently hasn't moved an inch.

-
@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:

Why not? It'll send an UPDATE statement with every single column though, so if you have any triggers with
IF UPDATE()
you'd want to keep that in mind. And things get hairy if you have navigation properties in there.
-
@Maciejasjmj said in The Official Status Thread:
Why not?
Considering the amount of hand-rolling that actually submits the request to that route, it's a bit surprising.
I just didn't expect it to Do The Right Thing so easily, I was fully prepared to use a handy mergeUpdatedProperties function I built using reflection to do the needful. Then again, that function expects a list of decided form variables, so...

Status: taking a peek at rotary forged wheels. I put 20x10's on the rears a month ago and ended up saving 10+lbs per corner (wheel + tire) over the stock 20x9 wheels. Using the 5x rule of thumb for rotating mass, that's supposed to be equivalent to a 100lb drop in sprung weight. Given that I got a timeslip with my second-highest ever trap speed (in June!), it seems like they're working as intended.
I'd like to get a matching pair of front wheels to replace the stock 20x8's, but saving 10lbs per corner is going to be slightly more difficult up there. The performance gains will probably be marginal, but it'll look better and possibly allow more tire options up front.

It's 30 years later now, and gamedev apparently hasn't moved an inch.Except back then, you had games like Battletoads and Megaman, which were hard, but not in stupid ways. If you died, it was your fault and you knew it. Not stupid unwinnable randomness.
