You know, the DLL.
Actually, I kinda do. It's the one that handles multiple logons (because I have two sessions, yet for some reason my build of Windows 10 doesn't like that)..

Though given what we know about @HardwareGeek, maybe one of these is in order?
Seriously, what price are we talking about for an Android phone with decent performance? I kinda like the idea of a WinPhone, but a bunch of the apps I'd want are only available for Apple and Android. Besides calling and texting, web browsing would be the main application (mostly when WiFi is available, with an occasional quick check of Google Maps or Wikipedia or such when out and about). TDWTF is about the most stressful thing I'd do with it, but I doubt anything is beefy enough to handle  gracefully.

Definitely should be able to get something nice for less than $200. Maybe quite a bit less. (Depends on taxes and BS like that.) You can spend a lot more, too.

Status: Spent two hours last night trying to talk someone through dealing with a bizarre problem with http compression and a satellite internet provider, where the whole problem was only observable at several stages removed. Naturally I couldn't reproduce any of the problem at all, since the real trouble trigger was at the satellite ISP's cache server. And I think it was all fixed by just updating the libraries powering the client-side software to the current release version anyway. Hey guys, that's the first thing to try when dealing with a problem, since if it does fix stuff then you aren't going to get support for fixing it any other way from anyone at all.
Debugging stuff at third hand removed is hard and I want my Friday night back.

Got a call from one of those Indian "your Windows is having problems, let me fix it by installing malware" scammers. I wasn't ready for it so couldn't do anything that fun, but managed to keep him on the line for 10 minutes with an apparently slow booting machine, then a lot of "Oh, windows + R? I thought you said 9" stuff. Eventually I asked what should be coming up, he asked if I could see the Windows icon in the corner of my screen and I said no, it just says Ubuntu 14.04.
Any ideas for next time? I'm tempted to get a VM running with Windows ME or something so I have a sandbox I can screw them with. I expect there will be another one, since this is the second we've had (last time I was busy so just told them I don't have a computer)
Also, the number wasn't blocked but I assume they're spoofing it somehow. Is it worth reporting the number or calling it back to let whoever actually has it know their number is being used for this stuff, in case it's a legitimate business or something?

@FrostCat The statue is one of a set scattered around midtown, all of which are pokespots, so on a lunch break I could probably hit 6-7. Realistically i'll just hit that one every day :)

Status: Welcome to Saturday, Your Day Off(tm)!
First on the agenda: your cat had a disgusting diarrhea attack sometime overnight and her hindquarters are positively covered in her own rotten fish-smelling shit. She can't clean herself because if you remove her cat-cone for even a nanosecond, she'll immediately start biting at her sutures. Grab a washcloth and clean it up! This'll take about an hour and your blakeycat will hate it so much she'll literally hiss at you for the first time ever in your relationship with her.
Second, find every floor she walked on (a.k.a. the entire house) and pull out the mop. Clean it all. Better refill the mop water and clean it a second time, because that rotten fish smell is nasty and it's wafting from the mop bucket.
Now grab the disinfectant the vet gave you and carefully run it over her sutures to ensure she has no shit-fluid actually leaking into her bloodstream. You're almost out of the disinfectant so try to save some for tomorrow's shit-cleaning you know will come.
Done? Congratulations! Make some coffee and eat and orange and start your lovely Saturday! ... oh wait the litterbox, fuck it I'll do that later.

Yeah no. It's highly likely to be spoofed. That's why they want your number to call you back instead of the other way around.

Ugh, looks like the regulators are going to have to take steps to stamp out the providers who are letting the spoofing happen. The regulatory action taken will probably be overkill, but if the telcos won't clean their act up by themselves then government will end up forcing it upon them. Perhaps the right thing would be to make the telcos liable for harm enabled by the spoofing? That would wreck their finances quickly, and get a clampdown going post haste…

Not unless you have the proper setup to do so . Not only that, but since they're out of the States the law is rather unsympathetic to people who follow mysterious voices that they were not expecting and have no reason to believe.
Not only that, but nearly all of the software they use for remote control (because that software at least is legitimate) will pop up big warning messages about how Microsoft doesn't cold call people about their viruses (truly they couldn't care less, but I digress).
It looks like this:
So unfortunately it grandma is a good little 🐏 and even that doesn't tip her off (full disclosure: at least mine stopped at this point and she doesn't know the difference between left and right click) then.... Sorry?

Not that this is advice for you, because I know how much you like that, but for anyone else in this situation, this is where a showerhead on a hose is great. Scruff the cat, hose the affected area off. Done in a couple of minutes.
-
@dkf said in The Official Status Thread:

Probably.
The problem in the US is they've been called before Congress before, although I think that was about autodialers, and they simply lied and said they weren't doing it.

It's a good thing that wasn't advice aimed at you then, right? I mean, if I thought my cat might puke again, and I didn't have one of those after reading someone mention them, I might try going out and getting one, but you do what you want.

@Jaloopa numbers won't be blocked, and good luck getting the overseas telcos to give a shit. here's some inspiration. be as infuriatingly dense as you can, but make sure that they think you're going to pay them.

@Magus ..... what the flip is up with the annotations on that video?
seriously....... wtf?!
Way back when, YouTube had a feature where a video owner could share a link that let anyone with the link add annotations to the video. What you are seeing is the result of that link being handed out in public. I used to see dozens of videos like that, mainly on videos of music uploaded by not-the-copyright-holder - they'd just paste the link in the video description and eventually the video would just be flooded with annotations all trying to out-do each other. The feature was eventually removed but the annotations remain, ever a reminder of the days before YouTube would break two old features while adding an unwanted new feature.
