Our Operations and Support team lead had a babby and is out on paternity leave.
There are 3 more allegedly qualified people with an alleged 10 years of combined experience with our platform on that team.
In order to deal with the resultant backlog , we had to reallocate their manager and a PM to bailing them out. The PM is the only one who is any fucking good at it (she started here doing that job). The manager and the regular team are just fucking things up worse.
In order to deal with the things they're fucking up, myself and the other leads are stepping in. I have done all of 30 seconds of my own job during business hours since babby happened. The rest has been redoing things that were done wrong, explaining self evident things that we teach on day 1 of system training, and sending my boss screenshots of WTFs.
Oh, and that PM. One of the key things they do on the operations team is write adhoc sql to dig around in the production database to debug. She just about has where clauses down and is terrified of joins, and yet is dozens of times more effective at finding what she's looking for.

I've never actually seen one in the UK in the wild (as opposed to on TV). I don't know if they're a good idea or a bad idea, but we tend to have double-deckers instead.

That all depends on where you are hauling. Unsurprisingly, trains around Boeing are capable of doing so, because that is what they do. There are a hell of a lot of places in the US where you could not do so though.

... seriously though, yes I think the East Coast loading gauge is quite a bit smaller than the West Coast.
When they were building the west coast tunnels and snowsheds, they realized that the mountain climbing and sheer range required would dictate monsters like this:

No clue about actual loading gauges, but in .nl we've got quite a lot of double decker trains. Which is interesting because apparently officially it's not a train network, but a metro. Something with European legislation...
Looks small from a distance. Is actually quite large - seats around 100 per carriage.

Got email late this afternoon; they want a second phone interview with "the team." I also have an initial, half-hour phone screen with a local Seattle company tomorrow afternoon.
Phone screen done. Went ok, I guess, but they're really looking for more experience than I have with a specific framework. I'll find out whether they want to move forward within a few days. If they do, they'll send me a problem to work on for about a week, and then I would present my solution to an interview panel. Only if I get past that would I have a 1-1 interview with the manager.

If it's anything like the US, the distinction is basically how heavily built the rolling stock is. Actual trains - heavy rail in the US - are allowed to use mainline tracks. Amtrak is a heavy rail operator, as are a few metro systems.
The gist if it is that the rolling stock needs to not explode if a freight train hits it.
Which means it needs to be built... Like a freight train.
Light rail systems are much more economical than heavy rail because you can skip all that steel, saving weight and therefore energy and space. But the trains need to be isolated from any heavy rail trains. Shared tracks need to be time separated - heavy trains at night and light rail during the day, usually.

Am I missing something? If you have the talent, then learning the framework should be easy. If they pass up talent such as yours for lack of a specific experience, they are foolish. Frameworks are easy to learn, real talent is hard to find.

If you have the talent, then learning the framework should be easy.
I'm not going to disagree, but they're looking for someone with 5 years of experience, and I have about 2, and not with the latest generation. (There is a family of verification frameworks, each based on the best features of its predecessors, as vendors stopped pushing their proprietary solutions and contributed their strong points to the cooperative effort to build a standard framework.) My experience is with the penultimate generation, which is about 90% compatible with the latest. It's totally a transferable skill, and hiring managers know this, but it still puts me at a disadvantage compared to candidates who have actual experience with the actual framework they'll be using. (Also, this is exactly the stuff I'm worried about forgetting. I only used it for a couple of years; half a year is a long time to be not using it and still retain solid recall of the kind of in-depth knowledge that would be probed during an interview.)

I don't want to name the company — anonymity for possible (but I really hope not) future WTFs, and all — but if I did, "pedantic" and "stuffy" are not words you would associate with it. "Cutting-edge" "Visionary" Given their long-term mission, I understand why they're looking for the very best people, and if I can convince them I'm good enough, I'd be excited to be part of the project.

Bear in mind, also, that the car trip was almost exactly 60 minutes of bumper-to-bumper stuff except several miles of highway upon which a bicyclist would've had a pretty miserable trip considering how much he'd be pissing off the people who would be able to drive 50mph if not for him.)
