You probably can log in with a Microsoft account, activate that way, and then switch to a domain account, if you're willing to do that.
I have VS 2015 Enterprise on it. I use it at home. I can't log in at work, so I have 9 days left on the trial.

Really? Bummer.
I had 8.1 Pro on my work computer, so it upgraded OK.

Status: Wiped the laptop, installed the OEM version of Windows 7 from way back when, now attempting to upgrade to Windows 10. I really hope it doesn't force me to upgrade to Win8 first.
Mine didn't. (It's currently at the "let's schedule" this point. Powered down now because I don't have the time and I don't want it doing something on its own)

I don't want it doing something on its own
Then I hope you aren't upgrading to the Home edition of Win10, or else you might as well not ever power it up.

That one is - but I am aware of that. For that machine, it's ok. My home-dev system is pro.

Are they running Win10 natively? On the bare metal of the machine? If so, I do not expect satisfactory performance from those specs...

STATUS: Talking with an American sysadmin yesterday.
Sysadmin: "... and lastly, you should know I will be going on vacation tomorrow. I won't be available on Thursday and Friday. But don't worry, I'll set up a forwarding email so you can reach me, and will be back on job Monday."
Me: ".......... ok dude, don't blow your entire vacation at once, I guess."
Yay for American worker rights?

Yay for American worker rights?
I saw someone recently (can't remember if it was TDWTF or not) that said they got upset if an American co-worker took more than a week off at a time.
How are you supposed to have a holiday in just a week?

One day is sufficient for a Holi-day.

? Are you suggesting he only took 2 days off because he only has 2 days of vacation time?
How are you connecting A to B here?

That person is an asshole; they exist in every country.
How are you supposed to have a holiday in just a week?
I don't know what the euro-definitiion of "holiday" is, but keep in mind it's quite different from the American definition. (I think you're using "holiday" like we'd use "vacation".)
In any case, I usually just take 3-day and 4-day weekends frequently as my vacation. I don't particularly like travel, and 4 days off is fine for my mental health. Do I do that because I don't get enough vacation time? No. That's how I prefer to do it.
-
I think you're using "holiday" like we'd use "vacation".
Definitely, from the sound of it. Thanks for the info, I buttumed holiday/vacation were interchangeable.
-
No biggie. My main concern at the moment is figuring out what the hell Mr. Cartman "GamerGate" 82 was talking about.
He's made some kind of connection that's beyond both Boomzilla and myself, and that's quite an achievement.
-

Considering he called it literally "going on vacation", how else should I take it?
I just asked a different guy in the same company. He gets 10. So I guess the sysadmin guy gets about the same and parcels it out?
Dunno, the term "vacation" in my mind usually refers to at least a week of downtime. Anything less should be called "personal day(s)" IMO.
-

Do you think "vacation" = "travel"? Is that the disconnect?
Note that here in the US, 4 days is more than enough time for a trip to, say, Disneyland or Vegas. (We use these things called "jets" to travel quickly.) So even if you did interpret "vacation" as travel, I don't get the objection.

Without knowing what "10" means, there's no way to interpret this. 10 days of vacation not counting federal/state/company holidays?
I mean I worked for a company that gave me only 10 days of vacation, but they also had something like 22 company holidays. So the total was more than a full month of paid time off.
The company I'm working for now has ZERO company holidays, but gives shitload of vacation time, some of which you're expected to spend in liu of company holidays. (For example, virtually everybody took July 4th off. The company was, technically, open. This is because we have staff who provide 24/7/365 phone support and this vacation scheme helps them not feel neglected when they have to work on, say, Christmas.)
I think you're just really, really, really reaching to find something to be anti-American about.

Yeah, we know. An uncle of mine from the US wanted to go on a tour through Europe with us. His proposed itinerary:
Day 1: London
Day 2: Prague
Day 3: Paris
Day 4: ViennaYeah, we get that Europe looks small to you guys. But, seriously?
-
Was he from New York?
Anyway, we get the same from you Euro-weenies, so suck it up. Once, after telling a euroweenie I was from Seattle, I got seriously asked if I knew some family who lived in Texas. I've never been to Texas, except I think once as a stop-over at DFW airport.

Usually involves travel. But more importantly, a good chunk of time where you can decompress and forget about work.
I, for instance, also don't like to travel, but never take less than a week of time off. First time I hear of this "waste all time off on long weekends" strategy.
I mean I worked for a company that gave me only 10 days of vacation, but they also had something like 22 company holidays. So the total was more than a full month of paid time off.
Company holidays? First time I heard about it.
Unless it's like what companies here call "collective vacation", which is basically "you have 20 days vacation, but have to use 10 of those during these two weeks, when the shop is closed".
I think you're just really, really, really reaching to find something to be anti-American about.
Oh noes, my stealth Jihad is exposed!

There are some regions where they are used interchangeably. However, in the US, "holiday" tends to be used more in the sense of "public holiday," a single day off work.
-

Or the beach or the mountains or wherever. Depending on where you live, that could be just a few hours drive away (or less!).
I'm not a fan of overly long periods of time away from home and my normal routine. Two weeks is really stretching it. A full week is plenty, but like blakey says, lots of little short stuff is often great.
-
Yay for American worker rights?
Some of us prefer to use part of our vacation in smaller-than-one-week increments.
-
This conversation reminded me that my vacation balance is now over 100 hours, so I should probably take more. Maybe I will shove a week off on the calendar.
-
I'm recently back from a 3-week vacation in southern France. We (my brother and I) are considering doing a city trip to London later this year - probably a midweek. I still need to look into what the best approach is for accommodations. (In the city? Outside the city? Can we travel by underground should we expect to need to take a cab? etc.)

Some people can't afford to take more than a week off at a time. If they do, the work just piles up so much that they end up with more stress when they get back than when they left.
-

I hate that. The company I used to work for did that during the Christmas-New Year season. Except that you only started with 15 days, and they'd only tell you a month or two in advance whether or not they were actually going to schedule the year-end shutdown. You couldn't plan a real vacation any other time of the year, because you might (probably would; there was only one year I was there that they didn't shut down) need to use it at the end of the year, or else take the time off without pay.

Well... I suppose you could keep on digging. After less than 12742 km you would be out again...

Things are different this side of the pond. An American won't consider it a good vacation unless they are so tired when they get back that they need another vacation to recover.
For the record, I agree with you, but then again, I'm posting here so I'm probably not normal.
-
The other thing Euroweenies don't get is a lot of Americans enjoy working.
I'd say 20-30% of the people I work with take vacations primarily to prevent their vacation time from expiring. Not because they want to.

I still need to look into what the best approach is for accommodations. (In the city? Outside the city? Can we travel by underground should we expect to need to take a cab? etc.)
There's all sorts of hotels in the city, so you can probably find somewhere that's suitable. Staying outside the city probably means being more than 50km out, so you'd be talking taking commuter rail in (you won't want to drive; London's traffic is abysmal) and it probably won't help with the cost. The train and the underground are likely modes of transport. Maybe bus and bike too. Take the cab if you want, but it's not the cheap option, and often isn't too quick.
I mostly try to avoid London (except when I've got business to attend to there). There's lots of really interesting stuff there, but it is annoyingly far and I've usually got cheaper options.

Same here. After taking a week off, which is 9 days including the weekends that wrap that week, I am ready to get back to work.
We also take a lot of long weekends to places within easy driving distance, and once or twice a year on long weekends to farther destinations that require flying to the destination.

Liar!
Do you disagree that Americans like to work, or that Euroweenies don't get that we do?
