OK, so I can explain. "My" company produces tools for program analysis and some related tasks. The project I work on most of my time is a DARPA research effort that is trying to come up with ways to improve software and device security; specifically, suppose you're the Army and give your soldiers each a smart phone, you don't want that smart phone to start transmitting their owner's location to ISIS or something like that. So, we're trying to develop tools that look for both deliberate malicious behavior as well as bugs (memory corruption errors, etc.) that could enable potential attacks. Think like anti-virus but on major major steroids (except that making the steroids is really really really hard and equivalent to the halting problem and so everyone's steroids kinda suck now :)), because we're trying to go well beyond just signature matching and stuff and use things closer to formal verification.
So, we were given some programs to evaluate our tools and processes on a while ago. They just gave us an update with answers and more info and such, and for whatever reason they were packaged as RPMs. The programs we are trying to analyze are ARM, but the analyses tools all run on your bog-standard x86/64 workstations. So installing those RPMs isn't necessary; I just needed to get into them to get to the programs we want to look at.

ah..... well that makes sense.... still a little odd, but at least understandable.

STATUS: Cleaned up a tricky Chrome home page hijacker.
Spent about 20 minutes digging through every niche of my PC.
Is it a service? ... No.
Is it a Chrome extension or plugin? ... No.
Is it a hidden setting insidechrome:\\flags
? ... No.
Is it an obscure registry switch? ... Damn it, no.It turns out, they simply added their URL to my chrome shortcut, so it was "
...\chrome.exe http://mystartsearch.com -blahblah-huge-hash...
".Very clever. Already planning on pranking someone with this.

Status: My wife is washing all of my son's bedding, etc. She forgot that the gigantic stuffed chicken has a sound thing in it that makes it crow when you squeeze its wing. The washing machine sounds like we are torturing/drowning a rooster in it. Kind of disturbing really.

Are you sure that's safe to wash?

Are you sure that's safe to wash?
Nope, but she put it in there before I knew what was happening. Every time the washing machine drained, I could hear it squawking again...so it is fine to this point.
Honestly though, I would be OK with it not surviving this as long as the batteries don't explode or something.

Battery acid all over your clothes is ‼FUN‼.

I've listed RPM contents on occasion using
rpm2cpio | cpio -t
. That was on redhat, the tool may or may not be available on ubuntu/debian. I do know file roller on ubuntu supports browsing RPMs.

Fuck you, PostgreSQL.

Is

a reserved word?
-
Yeah. Of course, this is obvious now, but it was less obvious when buried inside a huge dynamically generated chunk of SQL.

Status: Bought Cities: Skylines approximately 1 hour ago on Steam. At that time, it said it would take about an hour to download. It is about ⅔ downloaded now. Steam says the time remaining is 5 hours 24 minutes.

At that time, it said it would take about an hour to download.
Liar. You mean, with MilwaukeePC, it's more like a year to download.

I have a feeling this is like Xeno's paradox, except that instead of getting 50% closer in 50% of the time, it's 100% of the time.

Status: Nearly 4am and I can't sleep, now I definitely can't.
I noticed a harvestman spider (the monster-truck of UK spiders, tiny body and huge legs) climbing up the door. OK, so I'll put him out the window in a minute. Glanced back and no spider. A few minutes later something lands on my shoulder, glance over and yep it's the spider.
As a manly engineer I dealt with the situation calmly and didn't leap round the room like a little girl.bloody spiders

I finished that on Thursday. I'm ready for Monday's new strip.

The gigantic stuffed chicken survived and still crows.
Damn.

Oh you'll love it, it turns into furry sex. They hook Florence up with this bald vet guy, that's about when I stopped reading it.

Tell me when it hits 5 minutes, then I can buy, download, and install the game and probably still beat you.
I hate Comcast with a passion, but when their shit works, it works.

OMG it would be so hilarious if your router's been broken this whole time you've been complaining about Midwest Internet Shitty PC or whatever that company's named.

It's an opilione, not a spider, so you're fine. ;-)

Status: Finally caught up after getting back from spending a weekend in the middle of nowhere getting drunk on homebrew beer

Nah, I have to reset it every few days. The internet is still shit when it's working, but when it's not, the internet is super shit.
-
THanks for the recommendation! i'll consider it carefully.
-
Did your homebrew beer have the ABV printed on it?
-
I didn't make any; I don't really have the space to do so

Wut:
@ben_lubar: tell us how Skylines is. After SimCity, I am tempted to get it

still crows.
We once had such a toy ... It survived the washing cycle but after that it would start making sound without anybody around. Spooky ...

He has toys that have done that since they were new. Like they are possessed or something.

There's no sex, furry or otherwise. All they did was go out on a a date and I don't think they even ever had him again because shortly afterwards the real story finally started.
-

You should give it all the consideration it deserves, and you should be able to figure out how much that is after my last post.

It's good enough that I stayed up until 6 AM playing it before I looked at a clock.
