I'm not there yet, but I'm getting closer.

I spent the day with my dad for Father's Day. I'm disturbed to note how much my communication skills have devolved into "oh hey look at this funny meme/comic/video that relates to what you were just saying!"

but you love their money!
Quiet you!Friday:
canceling interview. Role already filled.
kind of shit to do it by declining an invite but okay.Monday, over email:
sorry, cancelled wrong interview. I’ve rescheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
hello, sure but I’m not available on Tuesday can you give me the original slot on Wednesday?
I’ve rescheduled for Tuesday morning.
I’m not available Tuesday. Can you reschedule for Wednesday onwards at any time.
I’ve rescheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
I’m withdrawing from this process.
Corpo got in touch and said you’ve pulled out.
I’ll forward you the email chain.
Jesus wept. Sorry about this.

Luckily I don't care about performance for what I'm doing, which is just pulling down data for a one-time process.

its a greenfield serverless project that will use springboot and hibernate.
who the hell put that spec together? Also stating that putting Java 21 on a job spec is a pointless flourish especially when the rest of the spec says they’re moving to lambdas that won’t support the rest of the libraries they listed in a greenfield spec isn’t a good way to convince the recruiter to be put you forward.

Status: I want to scream.
After two meth heads, I thought maybe this third could send a PayPal invoice. While waiting, I heard from a fourth that had to use a friend's because he "hasn't had it running for months." Yeah, my PayPal totally disappears when I don't use it...except it doesn't. I sent him an e-mail address to send the invoice to (not smart enough to ask) so let's see what happens (bracing for disappointment). Third guy finally gets back and he has an "error message" so he wants me to send money to his PayPal. You fucking donkey, I need an invoice to pay with a credit card. God damn it.
Meanwhile I'm waiting on an in-stock order from Limited Run Games that's progressing like this:
Yeah, lay around a week to make the label and another week to get the package out the door. Now DHL's going to jerk off for another week at least.NewEgg is dragging on an order from June 12th that's hard to track because they used UPS. Those needful doers use enterprisey client-side HipsterScript microservices with no error handling that just spin and spin.
Not happy to confirm the new owner of at least one of the two Subways in town is a needful doer either. Suspected it when they installed the lid to hide the meat and cheese side of the line. Also prices went up 9% last week (letting a blind "creative" redesign the menu didn't work) so that's super awesome. Even though I cut back, I didn't want to have to quit subs.
A 3D scanning and printing operation would print money. But the only businesses people want to open anywhere are smoke shops.

I have that problem on my PC, but their tracking works on my phone. Maybe only on Chrome with castrated ad-blocking.
-
@HardwareGeek Yeah I can use Firefox on a phone but then I get the mobile experience where all relevant information is missing so it can fit 300px of whitespace between every element because scrolling is broken.

Status: Fuck people who put unnecessarily strong (and unnecessary) magnets into shit. Then also fuck people who make precision calipers out of magnetic metal.
(And fuck me for only having pens with magnetic tips at hand. At least paper is magnetically inert and not fighting me throughout the whole thing.)

Note to Self: Magnetic pens are a thing. Never buy them.

@Parody
this send me of the path searching through my desk drawer first to recover the magnet that I knew was there (only to find it sticking to some random clutter) and my collection of pens of the different company names/logo's my current employer has offered me the last > 10 years.
Conclusion: the tips on some of them are weakly magnetic but the springs inside most are stronger magnets. Thanks, now I'll be running around with a magnet the rest of the day.

Status: I just cannot understand how this whole industry settled on showing "Sorry, didn't work, try again" as an error message and finding that even remotely acceptable.
Yesterday I booked a train ticket. Worked. Today I wanted to book another one. Same account, same payment method, all I get is "payment couldn't get processed". Repeatedly. Why? How about you give any kind of information what is going wrong instead of just "Oopsie 👉☺️👈"?
-
@topspin Because they do not know either what went wrong.
Welcome to wonderful worldz of the cloudz .
-
@BernieTheBernie Someone in this fucking chain of retardery should know what went wrong, instead of blindly returning

chain of retardery
Interesting. The Gang of Four described
Can you provide us with a short outline of the Chain of Retardery pattern?
Looking forward to learning more modern ways of software craftsmanship.
-
@BernieTheBernie it works roughly like this, with a bunch of outsourcing and lots of forwarding to third party providers, who in turn forward, thus "chain".
-
-
@Parody said in The Official Status Thread:

The pen itself isn't magnetic, the tip is made from a metal that interacts with magnets. (Well, it might be weakly magnetic now until it gets demagnetized again.)

Status: And wonderful, this mook wants payment sent under "family and friends." You know, where you can't use a credit card and don't have any buyer protection. I wonder how many more times I would've had to say "credit card" to get that to sink in.
It really sucks that PayPal used to have a way to send money to an e-mail with a credit card without having it linked to an account. But that hasn't worked for years. Not sure if it was a conscious decision or typical retarded buzzword engineering (TDD specifically) gone wrong.

That's a
clang-format
rule of ours. Too many and SonarQube will fail your PR for code smells.
-
@topspin as well as event-driven microservices with random delays and no back channel to report failure or success. All it knows is it got to the end and thing wasn't done. Where did it fail? no way to know.

@Benjamin-Hall Well, that is one way to handle faults. Not my preferred one though; I like to know what happened afterwards...

Yeah. Same. But I speak from the voice of experience where the CTO demanded we do event stuff and it's been nothing but pain.

Events aren't the problem. The lack of backflowing events with operation outcome descriptors is the problem.
