Status: This code is a mess. I've known it's a mess for quite some time and I got nobody else to blame than myself, since I've written it. I just don't see how to fix it right now.
Now I need to add a feature and it's coming to bite me.

Despite Cambridge Dictionary's insistence that everyone, including Americans, pronounces it /wÉŞp/, and no other pronunciation exists, General American and at least some other American dialects pronounce it /ĘÉŞp/, as correctly shown by Wiktionary, among others. Should it be pronounced that way? With regard to English, should and is are only occasionally related. And you have no grounds to complain about pronunciation, Mr. Cholmondeley Worcestershire.

status Now that I've swapped my ubuntu 18 and 22 machines (u22 is now the main one with the 27" 4K monitor, u18 is just a laptop) I get to deal with ubuntu's complete idiocy with monitors. The u22 laptop has a 4K screen (the u18 one did not). So I can either read that one (15+") ok (at 200%) and be able to read the 27" monitor from across the room. Or read the 27" one ok, and need a magnifying glass for the laptop screen. I did discover I can change Firefox's default zoom level to 200% - so micro pixels on the laptop screen it is.
-
@dcon I'm told that although neither GNOME's nor KDE's settings UIs support this, you can use
xrandr
to do shenanigans to make things work. Apparently the trick is to set the DPI to 200% everywhere, have the lower-DPI monitor take up double the framebuffer that it normally would, and then have it scale that down to its normal resolution.I'm told this, but I've never tried it. I wish you luck!

Ah yes. Linux. User unfriendly.
I'll just stick with scaling FF. And changing all the settings (again) when working without 4K external monitors.

and made that hardware all but impossible to repair, forcing you to go to apple to fix it
ifwhen it breaks, and they constantly break their software so that if you rely on an old app that hasn't been updated in a few years prepare to have it no longer work,
and lets not even get started on their malicious compliance with the new EU regulations. there's literally no way to interpret what they're doing there except as malicious compliance.

@accalia While I can understand part of the reasoning from Apple in the advantage for keeping device sizes down, a lot of it goes against their stated goals. If they want to be as environmentally friendly as they keep boasting about, making devices repairable and upgradable should take a priority as it enhances longevity and reduces e-waste. The bare minimum for a laptop is RAM, storage and battery to be easily user-replacable. For a phone and tablet battery and storage (via SD card) should be mandatory.
For a desktop there are no excuses, though. Regardless of form factor there is room for NVMe and RAM no problem. Apple will of course talk about their âunified memoryâ requiring it, but itâs still plain old DDR5. If they want to truly tie the memory to the CPU that intimately they should go the full hog and just use HBM in that case.
And the App store changes are full malicious compliance, yes. As someone who sided with Apple in the Apple v Epic battle even I can say the implementation is⌠not good.
-
@izzion There's another $1500 worth of
toystools I really want to buy, but that's eating into my emergency reserve a bit too much.ETA: Also, I might need to buy a laptop to use today's purchases in the way I intend. And it probably needs to be a fairly high-end laptop; maybe, anyway. We'll see about that.

Maybe. It depends on the weather. The purpose of these toys is (in part) to create, capture, and stream video of the solar eclipse in April. If the weather is clear, I plan to host a neighborhood viewing party, with my telescope and camera in my front yard (don't have a clear view of the sky from my back yard), with 4k HDMI video to my computer and TV. However, if the weather forecast says it's going to be cloudy, I'll be wherever I have to go to have clear skies, and setting up my desktop in the middle of nowhere without electricity is not so practical. And even if the sky is clear and I'm home, a laptop would be quite a bit more convenient than dragging my desktop out to where I can connect the video to it.

Yes, I'm all too familiar with that. However, in this case, I woke up first, and as I lay there awake with my brain running 90 mph, my bladder eventually suggested I get up. While that relieved that form of stress, unfortunately it did not relieve the mental stress, so I still didn't get back to sleep.

Insanity is doing the same thing multiple times and expecting different results. I guess this is why java is making it difficult to repeat the same operation if it threw an exception the first time.

But ... then Java is not ready!
Because in the , you must always be prepared for temporary failures, like a network connection not vailable, etc., so just wait a little and try again.
In the .Net world, thePolly
library is recommended for encapsulating that.
