The Official Status Thread

It's a "not really working" day today for many people it seems.
And I'm actually sad about that. The weather is nice, which puts me in a good mood, yet it's still a tad too cold to tempt me to go cycling or something, so I'd gladly work, but...

Status I almost forgot: My hedgehog dice arrived today!

Internet connection done gone fuck up in the office, so we've all been sent home to work from home.
-
-
The Internet is broken so they send you home?
If the Internet broke here, they'd see a productivity increase not send us home.

Without an Internet connection, we can't do our jobs

Oh right, because cloud.

Status: nothing works. I don't mean the thing I'm trying to fix, that's all done. I'm trying to negotiate the process to get it moved onto review.
Two days behind schedule already. Have to test on iPad because the process says so. Fix is correcting a spelling mistake, can't possibly have a different result on a different device (unless the whole thing wasn't working on that anyway, fixing which would not be in scope for this change), but have to jump through hoop anyway.
Have to get someone else to log into VPN for me because my login doesn't work. Had to get a different person to login for me testing on Mac because apparently there's a different set of people who can login to each thing. Have yet to ascertain whether disturbing someone else and them allowing someone else to be logged in as them every time testing is needed is the usual procedure. No-one seems to know whether there is any means of requesting access to login to VPN on either device.
Having got someone to login for me, safari has a hissy fit at opening the page. Probably a dodgy certificate on the dev environment? Mac didn't have a problem, iPad didn't have a problem last time, though this is a completely different dev environment than the only other webdev request I've done yet, completely different hosting and architecture.
No-one able to advise except the chap I already bugged to login for me, and I don't know if he can help, he's not around and I can't do anything until he gets back.
It's past lunchtime but I really need to get this done ASAP so obviously if I take a lunchbreak and he comes back I'll have to just abandon lunch.

Oh right, because cloud.
Well… yeah; the back-end of the system won't start unless it can connect to an EC2 instance. Plus our bugtracker/DVCS is web-hosted.

Oh right, because cloud.
Say again that there are no advantages to moving it all into the cloud
-
Yes, my cloud is down, too :P

My cloud is full of eels.

I gather you don't have the lower to sun blinds to see your screen?
What is “sun”? Why would I screen it? (I work in Manchester…)
-
Status: 20 minutes and counting to open a Web browser. Pretty sure my work laptop is just fucked.

That thing that blinds you on your way to and from work.

I gather you don't have the lower to sun blinds to see your screen?
I think you words some swapped.

Status: I found a bug. I hit Alt + F4 and it did not take me to the main menu.

Status: Yay! Discourse still likes giving out 504s:
I got two so far today!
Wait … wasn't the new server supposed to make things better?

My keyboard does not have an F4 key.

Status: Some things on my desk were rearranged when I came in this morning and just found that the pile of change in one of my drawers (for the vending machines) is missing. Guess I won't be grabbing a soda.

I got two so far today!

yes you do. it's just not labeled f5<img src="/uploads/default/16648/1692bd64f0435bb3.png" width="690" height="407">there it is.that key when pressed generates the F5 keycode so it's F5 even though it isn't labled that.

yes you do. it's just not labeled f5
WOT?
-
nevermind.....
-
FWIW my F4 key is also not labelled F5.
-
-
Neither is mine! This is a damned conspiracy.
-
-
No, it doesn't generate F5. I have the same key on my keyboard for my desktop computer above the F-keys. It generates "refresh", which I can prove by using it on my SSH session and having it refresh the page instead of send an F5 to the server.
-
-
- yeah i goofed f4 <> f5
- actually it does generate F5, the fact that NASSH refreshes is because chrome catches F5 and processes it before ti gets sent to the server. Hook up a keycode detector at some point. the chromebook's refresh key generates F5 (at least on the model i have)
- yeah ok your custom keyboard for the desktop may be generating WM_REFRESH instead of F5 for that key. i'm talking about the chromebook's keyboard which doesn't have the same keyboard mapping
- i'm tired and grumpy ok? is that okay with you‽ huh‽ is it‽ </rant>
-
+1 for wooden desk.
I have that keyboard on my other desktop here. Not in that layout though.

Status: This topic title reminds me of the early days of internet chat rooms, when someone would ask how you did something in the chat and the first response was usually something like, "Easy, just hit Alt + F4 to do 'X'" and then moments later their chat name would disappear from the list.
It was the simple things in life...

Nice.
The best was always when they would come back and say, "It didn't work. The program crashed. What's wrong with my computer?"
