What was supposed to be a quick in-and-out "standard of care" visit turned into a 3-hour-on-going ordeal.
Latest thing is an interrogation of sorts about my medical history, which apparently they had, but since I can not concur with whatever stuff, the attendant is simply deleting entries.
Also, is a blood pressure of 140/93 exceptional? I've been receiving noises of dismay in my general direction.

@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:

Anything >= 140/x or x/90 is stage 2 hypertension. Probably not exceptional, but definitely not good.

Let's see what Support has to say about that....
Status: I hate devices that consistently fail shortly after warranty expiration. If this had happened literally 28 days earlier, they would have replaced it, no questions asked.
But since it's not under warranty, here, here a small discount enough to cover shipping.
Sigh.
Maybe I should try one of the wider ones instead of the Tootsie Roll style? It's $50 more, has 12 decreased runtime, WiFi that is software disabled, but can be enabled with Google Pay...?
I'll sleep on it.

Given they're yours, I'm amazed they last that long before failing.

Status: Fucking hell, the power bill's gone up AGAIN.
This month's bill is $505. And that's on the budget billing plan that reserved $132 off of it. I know there's 4 people living here but fucking hell, how the hell is our power usage THAT much higher than last year when it was HALF that amount with 3?
-
@e4tmyl33t Is the amount of power (rather than the charge) about in line given the change in the number of people? The price isn't something you can do much about, but the power usage is easier. Maybe there's a device in use that's particularly power hungry and it would be possible to economise.
Anything that does heating or cooling as a primary effect is suspect. Those are the absolutely main power hogs.
-
@dkf There was SOME more heater usage this year as it was somewhat colder than last year, and half the heaters in the house are electric baseboard heat (the main heat for the house is a gas furnace powering steam radiators), but still...
Guess I just need to yell at the roommates to curtail the heater/AC usage as much as they can this year, because this constant high amount isn't sustainable.
Edit: The 3-4 desktop computers that are also always on plus the half-dozen or so laptops probably aren't helping matters either...
-

Yes, all of that might just add up to one heater. Maybe.
-
@dkf Yeah...maybe 2, they're all gaming-grade PCs with 600-800W powersupplies, though the only one that's really CONSISTENTLY being used is the one on my desk which gets used ~16 hours a day.
-
How many RGB LEDs do they have?

Yes... but how much are they being used? You'd need to be mining crypto or something like that to keep that PSU really going enough to make a large difference on the scale of a heater. Supercomputers are pushed that hard, sure, but desktops mostly aren't unless you're doing something like running a high-graphics game all day.
To put it another way, an 800W computer is a big beast for a home. A 1kW heater is a small heater. (AC is another big user of power.)

Operation success. I hate hydrocodone. Fuck your promises, I don't think I'll make a real attempt at getting more.
We'll see if the overall result is net positive.

Well I went and done it. Let's see if the wider one gets fucked slightly sooner than a year so I can actually use the warranty this time...

Hydrocodone is a Schedule 2 controlled substance. It's not something one should stock up on "just in case".

@Zecc but I believe that was outlined during yesterday’s working hours and related to us after midnight but still in “logically yesterday” even if not yesterday.

Not in @Benjamin-Hall's time zone (nor mine). says it was posted at 23:36 CDT, which means it was only 21:36 PDT, which is his time zone.

@HardwareGeek but it was after midnight in my timezone and presumably Zecc’s…
-
@Arantor I'd say that's a you problem.
-
@HardwareGeek I’d say it’s a Zecc problem, seeing that I wasn’t confused about this as such ;)

It was early morning, yes.
But being overly pedantic over a joke? Clarifies which site I'm in, if there was any doubt.

@Zecc I don’t know about you but there is something at least comforting about knowing that some things never change.

They're already trying to regulate it with their regulations. What are you gonna do, wait for the black helicopters?

Status: there’s this Windows 8 laptop that nobody could remember the password for. At various times over months some attempts have been made, unsuccessfully.
I had tried the classic Ease of Access / cmd routine, but for whatever reason I don’t recall, that wasn’t possible. Some other unsuccessful guesses, and I find chntpw can blank the admin password. Interesting, but… wasn’t needed too urgently. And perhaps a bit too destructive to do unprepared.
Fast forward to today and I have the brillant idea to try cracking it instead. Install ophcrack, fiddle with the BIOS (which needed a password of its own set temporarily to disable secure boot), boot a Linux from a flash drive, copy the relevant database(s) to another flash drive, do that again because I copied one of the wrong files, download half a gigabyte of rainbow tables to get started, sit back, and…
It’s done? Done done?
Yep, the password was so simple it was found by brute force alone. Silly me had been trying various 6- or 7-character passwords, worrying it might even be as many as 8, when it was only 4. And it does indeed work. Insert easy-for-computers-hard-for-humans xkcd.
Well, I suppose I’ve earned my hackerman credentials now.

@Tsaukpaetra
One theme of guesses was something likeabcd12
and derivatives, with abcd and 12 substituting something marginally more meaningful, but nobody had thought to trim it down to the equivalent of ab12.There’s uh, something of a history of a relevant individual forgetting device passwords with no record. See also¹ the tale of the single-purpose macbook, currently serving as a zero-purpose macbook. (INB4 same picture)
¹ Not recorded on this site. Nor any other. At least not as of five minutes ago.
