@Arantor So I reordered and I got the cancellation notice for that several minutes before the order notification. Looking at my account, somehow, I do have an order in, except it's before the previous two that were cancelled. Not sure how that happened. Chrome did it's "lol busy jerking off, close windows or wait" dialog and I couldn't even push the submit button so I reloaded. Somehow that generated an order I guess. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I didn't even click submit before reloading. The button was frozen.

Highlights from an email chain I'm on.
I made a change three days ago and the build has been broken since.
why didn't you revert until you figured out the problem.
I need that change.
what error is in the logs.
an error in my new code.
did it work locally?
I just started it locally and I can see the error.Radio silence since.
-
@DogsB so, is he expecting other people to fix his bugs, and getting impatient waiting for that?!
-
@DogsB He checked in code that was broken from the start. Something that did not work even on his local machine?

Happens all the time here. Compile errors breaking the build at least once a month. A unit test broke? Comment out the assert.
-
@DogsB This means someone checked in code they did not test. Which means they checked in code they did not even build. Are you the Mad Max Fury Road of IT? This is super wild. How is anyone okay with this?

The Irish end of the company isn't and complain about it all the time. Most of us are quite good about this most of the time. The American and the outsourced bit they hired are terrible for this. It's why we don't get involved with their projects and leave them to flounder in their own messes.
We’re an international corporate enterprise. I've worked in two of them and they both followed this pattern.

The off-shored (but company employees, not outsourced) employees probably did test it (maybe), but what they tested was the code from source control, plus these 3 files copied from a random NFS server, plus a file copied from a user's work space. And the off-shore office management was , even after an American VP traveled there and spent a week threatening to fire anyone who didn't use version control properly, because using version control properly slowed down their doing-the-needful.

Well, in theory it could have built. (We have this happen every couple months) The issue is when they're building against an older branch. And when they submit, auto-merge works fine. And then the changes in the main branch are incompatible with the new changes. (I think we've invoked a new rule that your branch can't be more than XX hours out of date with the main one - doesn't fix the problem, but does make it less likely)
-
@dcon No wait. When you automerge, do you not immediately get the latest version and check again if nothing is broken? This just seems like a little laziness on the Dev’s side.

No. You push your PR, it's still based on the old branch. The build server passes. You click the "Merge" button and it merges into the main branch, no additional builds, nothing on your local machine (until you pull the main branch back to your local machine).

Maybe they’re like all the people whose code broke because of axios which is, essentially the same situation - checked in code that can’t build on the build server.
But the frontend world really is Mad Fucking Max.

That's the first bid tho. See if they'll roll over, or recite Hamlet's soliloquy.

@dcon you forgot that Codethulhu is pleased by this activity, that's the most important part.

Woah, that's a pretty useless build check.
Over here the system will at least create a temporary git commit on the server where it tries to merge the changes into the target branch of the PR. If it can't merge things because your code diverges too much then it's a no go, and if the merged result doesn't build then that's obviously also back to the drawing board for you.
-
@JBert That only works if the changes in question are contained within a single repo. Once you have a multi-repo change, tooling is a lot more primitive (and you need more disciplined devs).

@Tsaukpaetra NUL is a reserved name in Windows. There are about two dozen others.

Meh. Our git depot now has files with long paths that won't work on Windows.

the destination for the remote listener changed, maybe the job was outsourced from the NSA to China.

@Luhmann and additionally, the sounds played by the videos he watches gets recorded in a different channel, so the listener can easily select the channel he wants to evaluate.

@Carnage Yep, used to work with a "senior architect" that would do that, in a locked repository, and then go on vacation.

It wasn't me who bought it. I'm just doing the IT thing to make it "work".

@Zerosquare I thought for a moment it was Commander Keen edition but wrong colour scheme.
