If I get too close to the US border, or travel somewhere and forget to turn it off, it'll happily keep doing whatever it does in the background and rack up massive roaming data bills
Good thing that the european union decided that roaming inside the eu comes for free. Especially valuable for Germans near the French border.
I remember an inn in rastatt showing their phone number with the country code +49 in front. Good that they did so: my phone was still in the french network.

What idiotic shit decides to continuously waste data at such a high rate while on roaming?
I do not know your mum's android version. But on my phone, I can only chose between giving apps data access on mobile or not - no differentiation between "roaming" and "local".
I hardly ever use my pre-paid 150 MB per month (at 2€).Personally, I would pay good money for an app that blocks all network traffic unless I'm asked first. I haven't seen software that could that well and easily since about windows xp.
-
@DogsB There is a relatively simple solution: both WiFi and mobile data are generally switched off. I only activate them when I need them, and switch off afterwards.
But while activated, ... all the fucking apps which are allowed to consume data, will do so.

For those of you in the .NET world, the official docs suggest three solutions for auth. Identity Server is a paid product now. AD B2C and AD B2B are the only other options but fuck anything Azure not getting assfucked again voluntarily. So we’re out of options? Am I missing something?

Let's try to break this down...

I want people to log into my website (only) using a username and password from my website (only).
1.a. ASP.NET Identity. Overlooked due to the microservices craze but it's still there and still does the job. Recently updated with GDPR, MFA, HIPAA/FERPA/California, and external IdP login support.
1.b. Build your own. Not recommended, but can be helpful if you don't need the weight Identity brings with it. Manage logins and profiles however you want to, and let the cookie authentication provider know when you sign someone in so the rest of the machinery works as intended. -
I want people to log in using a username and password from my website, but they might use other websites/applications to do it (clients), or might use my website's login form for other websites/applications (resources/relying parties)
2.a. Duende IdentityServer. Yes, it's paid, but it's very batteries-included.
2.b. IdentityServer 4. Still free, still (mostly) compatible.
2.c. Azure AD B2C. Implemented similarly to #3, but since you own the credentials and policies and login page designs I've included it here. -
I want people to log into my website using some other website; I don't want to manage their credentials.
3.a. Google, Facebook, Discord, Windows Live, or really any OpenID Connect IdP.
3.b. Active Directory Federation Services, Azure AD B2B... same thing but corporate instead of consumer.
3.c. Integrated Windows Authentication. Lucky you, you live in a domain!
In all of these cases, you end up with a user (usually in a property conveniently named
User
, but sometimes you have to dig around for it and do like((ClaimsPrincipal) Principal.CurrentPrincipal)
that you can use for displaying names, storing IDs, doing authz checks with attributes, and all the things you've come to expect from an authentication system.

Something broke IIS/ASP authentication while I was on vacation and I don't know why it's not picking up Windows accounts on a domain now.
Also, Target's phone system for their red card is retarded. I call, on a modern phone so no shaming, and get a good signal and it can't understand the last 4 digits of my card. Then it asks for all 16 and interrupts me in the middle. So I hang up and get a lousy crackling signal but at least it can hear my numbers. Then it asks what I want to pay and says there will be 5 options - my minimum payment, my statement balance, and type in an amount. Thanks so much for not including my current balance as an option like a halfway-intelligent system would. But I knew this and remembered what it was so I type it in. Magically, it's deduced that $511.90 is greater than....$511.90.
For all of the fucking hoops I've had to jump through just to correct a misspelled label on some dopey internal app, why do blatantly wrong fuckups like this make it into production so often?
-
status Just told a live person on the phone to "fuck off!"
It was the 2nd call from some medical outfit pushing diabetic meters. The first number looked valid, I politely asked to be removed from the list and hung up. 2nd number was from "Sun Chemical" with the (same?) Indian dude. I lit into them. Wonder how many more phone calls I'll get from them...

@Zenith Assholes. Target decided it couldn't fulfill an order pickup. It gave me "three" alternatives - cancel, ship to home (disabled), and choose another store (all suddenly no longer eligible for order pickup). What a "choice." And, to top it off, it stole a 10% off Target Circle bonus that was applied to the order. Assholes.
-
@Zenith Well I called and they couldn't kick the coupon code back to me because reasons but they could apply 10% to my next order so I ordered a few more things this time around. Perversely it was probably better for both of us so there's absolutely zero chance this automation bug will ever be corrected.
-
@Zenith Let's say there are a class of bugs that has been there on the websites of Target, Lowe's, Walmart and one other clothes retailer I don't wanna name, that will never ever get fixed forever I fucking guarantee you that I can't tell you more.

(The only answer coming to mind is “you’re switching between a normal keyboard layout and whatever the fuck is Apple’s layout, but they don’t print the relevant info on they keys anyway.)

If you’re using floats to handle money, you should be banned from programming for life. Not that that’s stopping anyone.

@stillwater Some of the stuff they do on these sites is just braindead. At some point, Teepublic decided to remove the product links from its order confirmation e-mails so you couldn't easily order the same shirt again (super smrt big brain move LOL). Walmart recently decided to remove any order information besides the final charged amount from their order confirmation e-mails as well. And GameStop, you might've seen me complain about that before, they use at least three different calculations to get to the same final amount depending on where you're looking (checkout, order history, e-mail). A "10% off everything" sale could be applied correctly (10% off each item), spread evenly over items of multiple prices (a $10 item and a $90 item each have $5 removed), no breakdown at all (just 10% off the total), etc.
I currently cannot use GameStop's site on my phone because the search page returns literally six bytes - "Oops!\0"
-
@Zenith Oh, this is a good one. The product I ordered, that Target gave me the "option" of canceling or waiting for them to automatically cancel, magically came back in stock. If it was only going to be fake out of stock for A DAY, why didn't they just leave the order as-is and deliver later than promised like they always do?

To be smug in knowledge that I knowing they exist, I’m getting a twitch in my right eye. Something went badly wrong in the hardware market when we started to pay more for products without leds.
-

Don't think of it as paying more for products without LEDs. Think of it as paying less when you buy the RGB models, and getting free LEDs
-
@Zenith: I'm starting to think that you're suffering from something similar to @HardwareGeek's Delivery Distortion Field, except it starts at the ordering stage instead of the shipping stage.

I have mine configured to do pretty patterns. Wasn't a choice to have or not have, as such, this model of laptop comes with per-key programmable LEDs, and a light bar at the front of the case which I have naturally programmed to sweep back and forth with only red lights because I am secretly 8 again and my computer's name is consequently KITT.

-
@Applied-Mediocrity the laptop was a gift from my wife and was chosen because it is a decent gaming-grade laptop that will last for a bit. Perks of having a technically inclined wife - knows how to pick sensible IT gear, amongst other things.
-
@Arantor except for the RGB.
-
@topspin there wasn't a model in the range without it. The keys I have set to a pleasing pale blue pattern that reminds me of rain and isn't too bright when I'm coding in the dark.
The front light bar, I could have turned off... I could. But I am 8 years old and make the wooom-wooom noises when no-one is listening.

is for when you have the light bar converging like target designators on each key you press.

@Zerosquare I think you're on to something. I put a different order in this morning because the sale flipped to "spend $100 get $25 off." So I order on my way out the door to work and, unbeknownst to me, 10 minutes later they cancel. The reason? I exceeded a purchase limit on the item (I never ordered these before), my payment was insecure (their Red Card), or lolidunno. Idiots.
Edit: On a positive note, it looks like Target fixed their site to work on mobile again. I'm sure it was an accident though.
-
@Zenith the purchase limit is 0; no-one is supposed to buy these items. It's just a clever ploy to convince you to look at what else they have on offer.
