If this results in a tale with an inanimate object I'm muting this thread.
STATUS who has updated teams? The emojis are god awful. The fucking things blink now. Most of my conversations are nothing but emojis blinking at me. It's unnerving.

Per our company policy, it would be mandatory for you to perform a nuke-and-pave at this point.

Breaking: Viruses found to break down inside QA fieldHuman civilization might yet be saved thanks to a strange phenomena that all things - including pathogens - tend to break down within the Quality Assurance field emitted by Anthony T., an "awesome and chill teetotaler" brony from [redacted]. Taming this discovery so that it only breaks things we want will, however, be challenging. Studies are now underway if more people exhibit such fields. Asked if he would like to be compensated for science that must now be done, he replied that if he were to be summoned, he would appear.

With someone. Sadly, not of the female variation.
Managed to convince the elevator to open the doors though, since it hadn't moved. Wish I would have taken a picture of all the lit call buttons.

Status (in several related parts):
- Trying to update xcode (woe is me).
- But wait, there's not enough disk space!
- What the heck is using that space? This is my work machine, so no big games or videos or anything.
- Well, there's 30 GB in the Trash...oh, and xcode has kept every archive ever for another 30 GB, now let's look at the big offenders in the source directory....
- Why in the name of what are we pulling in a full
electron_prebuilt
in the node_modules of half a dozen projects? Sure, they're only 110 MB each....but those projects shouldn't have anything to do with electron. They're dumb servers. Which means that one of their dependencies is depending on electron... - Back to waiting for xcode to install.
Edit: Yup. The old "dump all the various shared definitions" project, which was a dependency of a bunch of projects (despite each of them only using about 2 of the classes) has an explicit dependency on electron. The only mention of it is in a Jenkins test runner (ie running tests on that project). Thankfully we're tearing it out wherever we see it now.

I have a dull (sorry, not rusty) butter knife with which to castrate yourself, if you'd prefer. I'm told it's less unpleasant than xcode.

@HardwareGeek One of my favorite things is that you can't download the SDKs for new versions (including point versions!) of iOS without updating the entire package. Which means you can't run simulators of the new versions (fair) or even run on a physical device (not so cool) that happens to be using the new versions.
Ok, so it's just a patch release (going from 13.X.Y to 13.X.Y+1). NBD, right? Except it's 18 GB of download, followed by 30 minutes to an hour of install, plus post install, plus it's not guaranteed to be compatible with previous versions. Including the previous patch release. Because apple is the anti-microsoft in this regard--they're allergic to backwards compatibility.
-
@Benjamin-Hall Somehow, this reminds me of a long line of colleagues in the support channel trying to install virtualbox on their new mac, which is apple silicon.
And then being told that even if virtualbox would work, they still wouldn't be able to run windows on it.
-
Not VirtualBox, but:
And it includes x86/x64 emulation, so you can run most Windows apps. A friend tried it and told me it worked pretty decently.

Is it even possible to have multiple versions installed? Unless you do it via gawd awful hacks, I'm going with no. MS may be evil in someways, but they do know how to keep their dev community happier.

You can, you just need to rename one of the packages to something else. And then fight it about access every time you switch. And deal with the inevitable conflicts. So like anything where you go against the One True ο Ή Way, it's 100x more painful than it should be.

He already knows it would be me that would get the ticket. This was simply an attempt to skirt the red tape.
Now, the tape must be pulled, and the customer will get their system scheduled for two weeks from now.

Status: When changing Features on Windows Server, it is best to reboot immediately when required, and not let it do Windows Updates at some point in the future, otherwise you might end up with an unbootable system.
In other news...
A few days ago I realized Windows Defender isn't a thing on 2012 unless you've enabled "Desktop Experience" because fuck you, buy some apples.
So I pushed the button, but waited until the weekend when I would be reasonably certain nobody would be in the office doing shit and thus whine about the server being down.
So this morning I go and see it also has pending updates. Well nice, let's apply them too. Get it all done.
FAIL!!!
All I ended up with was a black screen after rebooting, not even a mouse cursor. Tired of waiting after a few hours, reverted to a disk snapshot before the updates and now we're here, waiting on "features".
At least now I have some animation making me believe it's still doing something.
Good thing nobody is here to complain, looks like I'm in it for the long haul....

Got any better free alternatives that are better than running nothing at all?
-
@Tsaukpaetra When you put it that way, I don't. I'm not sure why would I tank I/O and waste CPU time (especially if it's on a meter) on malware scans on a server that should never get any unvetted access or files to begin with. Secure that bitch properly.

Hard to do when the people that run support for the main practice management software "solve" issues by setting the
Everyone
user to full access on all network shares every time they call in for help.Since I'm not there to monitor their actions I do more defense-on-accident.

But the original reason I was even attempting to enable Desktop Experience was to try and get the cleanmgr.exe program running (because, apparently, you can't run that without Desktop Experience) because I wanted to use the proper MS tool for removing prior updates and dumps and shit.
Enabling Defender was just a potentially beneficial side effect.
