I might need to buy a new one for my sanity - this 2012 model is so ungodly slow. Like molasses in Canada.
So far my "Late 2011" model (the one just before the first intro of Retina screens) is still holding up fine, but I'm several major OSX version behind. I guess I shouldn't update?

Well, you won't be able to update to 11.x... so even if you update, you'll still be behind!

Correct. Rip it down to FreeBSD not too long after security patches stop, tho.
Also congratulations, those were a pretty good year.

"Similar" means when someone calls your phone number, that "similar" phone will ring. Wait. It's AT&T. It might ring. But it will go to voice mail!

I'm always surprised when calls ring on my phone. Mostly because nobody I know uses my phone number for calling to, but also because I set the ringtone quite randomly and every time it rings I'm like "Wait, what the fuck is that noise? Oh! That's my ringtone! Holy shit!"

Nah, that's T-Mobile's schtick. At least half my calls go straight to voicemail without my phone ever ringing.

It was, indeed, delivered Wednesday, 9 June. The only problem is, I received this email saying it "just" shipped at 00:36, Thursday, 10 June, more than 12 hours after it was already delivered.

The OS of course. I don't really care if the JVM thinks that it has several GB of "free" memory in its heap when it's actually using them.
Then you can probably tune that down. There are performance consequences, but maybe they're acceptable to you.

I'd post a screenshot if I wouldn't need to redact basically the entire image, of the four stacked meeting reminder toaster notifications on my screen right now.

Do any of those meetings overlap? If so, use each one as an excuse for why you can't attend the other.

Only three at a time. What I did was join all three, and I made sure that every time I unmuted in order to talk in any of them they couldn't understand a word I said over the people talking in the other meetings, to drive the point home.

That actually sounds like proper levels of . "I need to talk so I'll just click 1 button so I can start talking. Not my problem they can hear the other meetings."

Status: I got up when my alarm went off this morning. I haven't done that in months. My alarm is still set for getting up, shaving, showering, dressing, etc. to get to an office by 08:00. There was no reason to get up that early this morning, except that I'd already been awake for over an hour and couldn't get back to sleep.

I have a filter jug because I'm in a very hard water area and I like my kettles to last more than a year. I've lost count of the number of times the kettle has finished boiling and I've just caught myself picking up the jug to pour some lovely room temperature water over my teabag

You're not brewing that coffee anywhere near correctly.

@Jaloopa said in The Official Status Thread:

Thanks for the reminder. I love my kettle; it boils water faster than anything else I've ever used, and I've had it for many years. But it's started leaking. It has a plastic window so you can see how much water is in it, and if you put more than the absolute bare minimum amount of water in it, it leaks between the window and the body of the kettle.
This model is discontinued. I don't want a digital display or precise temperature control. You have one job. Boil water. Not heat it to a precise temperature; boil it. As fast as possible. Nothing else. Unfortunately, time from room temperature to boiling is not a spec manufacturers advertise.
-
@HardwareGeek I think the wattage of the heating element is commonly included, and that's probably a good proxy. Provided they're not lying about that of course.
Barring that I think a third-party comparative test is probably more reliable than manufacturer spec anyway.
-
@PleegWat said in The Official Status Thread:

You'd think so, wouldn't you. Common, perhaps, but definitely not universal. Also, all the ones I looked at that do mention it, it's 1500W. My old one is 1750W, which helps explain why it's quicker to heat up. It's not a huge difference in power, but it (possibly in connection with something else about its design) seems to make a noticeable difference in time.
Also, why is krupsusa.com in a mix of English and French. The kettles page is English, except the JE M'INSCRIS button for their newsletter. The pages for individual products are English, except the section headings are French.

I think it has to be on the device itself here. Commonly either a sticker or embossed on the underside; a physical store may have show models you can check?
I'm also reminded of the US being on a lower voltage. My electric kettle is 2kW, and so was my previous one, but of course I run them on a 220V circuit.

Status: Disappoint. FedEx just delivered the extra string for my string trimmer (that I have to return, because I didn't realize until I got the trimmer and read the instructions () that it wouldn't work with the heavier-duty (larger diameter) string). But not the 3D printer. It's now scheduled to be delivered tomorrow.
Edit: It seems that in the 12 hours and 5 minutes between leaving one insignificant dot on the map in far west Texas yesterday morning and arriving at another insignificant dot in far west Texas yesterday evening, it only traveled a distance Google tells me should take about an hour and a half. What was FedEx doing with it the other ~10 1/2 hours? Why weren't they doing something like, I dunno, moving it ~10 1/2 hours closer to its destination?
