It's good to see that Google Translate can roundtrip properly then...because that's what I entered into it to get those characters in the first place.Although I entered "No problems here" for that first one.

@PleegWat of course if you google-translate the text that was originally generated with Google Translate, you get something sensible. I want someone who actually knows Chinese to point out all the ways @Benjamin-Hall got that writing wrong.
Edit: note that I wrote this post before the one above. I just didn't click "submit" fast enough.

Don't worry, all your dangling parts should be right were you left them.

Don't worry, all your dangling parts should be right were you left them.If I were running Android (I'm not, but as a comparison), I'd be one of those weird OEM devices that did so much hackery that they never got OS updates.
And it's not like I have any reasonable expectation of using those dangling bits for anything other than urination, so...sigh

Status: Does anyone know if there's a shim for internet explorer dlls that I can use to launch a different browser (or just get the URL an application is trying to launch)?
This application is trying to open an Internet Explorer popup to do an auth challenge, which isn't possible in Server Core, and I kinda need it so I can adjust some federation settings...
-
@Tsaukpaetra As an initial matter, if it's running on Server Core, it should be doing an OAuth Device Authorization Grant. But I assume you have no control over that.
If it's just launching Internet Explorer and sniffing the title bar for a reply, you should be able to check the command line for the Internet Explorer process even if it doesn't launch properly because Server Core. It's in Task Manager or any of the usual places to get process information (WMI, System.Diagnostics, etc).
If it tries to use the Internet Explorer scripting interfaces, it can be possible to create a sockpuppet Internet Explorer for it to use. That's outside the scope of what I can describe in a forum post, but basically you create an ActiveX control or other thingy that implements the COM
IDispatch
interface, register it with the Internet Explorer monikers in your user account, and log the calls. Because of howIDispatch
works, it's a lot easier to deal with than having to stub out all of Internet Explorer that the scripting engine could call.If it's written in .NET and using the WebView control, you can use .NET Reflector, DotPeek, JustDecompile, ILDASM, etc, to see how it builds the URL and assigns it to the control, and use Harmony or patch the program so that the URL goes to your code (such as
System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox.Show()
) instead. If it's written in C or C++ and uses the Shell Document Viewer DLL, things get a bit more complicated. Because it's using COM registrations you can't just dump DLLs in the app folder to detour around it, and because the Server-Core-related bricking happens before it has a chance to hand off the URL the app may just not bother.
-
You mentioned DLLs and Server Code, so maybe it won't work, but I'll just mention it anyway: have you tried using the same hack Process Explorer and Notepad2 use to substitute Task Manager and Notepad respectively?
It's a registry key setting a new program as the debugger for the old one. Search for
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\

Yeah it doesn't launch properly because the DLLs literally don't exist...
@TwelveBaud said in The Official Status Thread:

Yeah in the logs it just cancels everything before it can start because no DLL.

Would that work for a DLL that doesn't actually exist? 🤔 will have to try...

Status: Still working on taxes. I know I bought spare batteries for this tablet and I would say it's 98% certain where I bought them. Of course, no invoice in my e-mail and the site's password reset appears completely broken so I can't check the online order history. What's scary is that I can't find the batteries either. I know I ordered two and they were stupidly expensive (like $50 for a $500 tablet) and I was sure I put them with the tablet. I know I'll be too old to work in tech at the end of the year but brain problems should still be a bit off in the distance...
Edit: And I found the invoice in a box with the batteries. $63 each. Yikes. No way I turned a profit this year. Still
about the website/notifications though.
