Apparently, you have to do your online shopping at midnight in order to be able to reserve a time for the following day.
We're booking slots 2–3 weeks out. We fill in enough expensive items (two bottles of whisky) to the minimum order value so that we can secure the booking, and then edit the order later to have what we actually want as the content of the order only needs to be finalized about 48–72 hours ahead.
There are a few shortages, but nothing truly systematic: things that are missing in one part of the country are in good supply elsewhere. (Stores are applying some restrictions to how many items of popular products you can get at a time, which stops most of the crazy hoarding.)

In general I feel that this past decade has been a bit weak when it comes to films (and music).
In films, the problem is probably weak scripting, and that's caused by most of the best scriptwriters moving to working on long-format TV drama.
In music, I was wondering about that but I've found some very good currently-active bands online so I'm guessing the problem isn't weakness of production so much as what the major music labels are promoting.

I tried for the big supermarket near me.
If I do my shopping at about half-past midnight I can get a slot to go and collect it in three weeks time. No delivery slots. I assume they all disappeared in the 30 mins between midnight and me checking.

I've got accounts set up with several of them. That makes it much easier.

Yes, you need to start trying to log in a bit before midnight so that you're actually in there in the critical post-midnight slot.

I was checking out of curiosity because a friend mentioned it. I'm managing with just going to smaller more local shops, especially now the craziness has died down.

It wasn't terrible. Not super great, but for a free movie? Not bad.

Status: Fun times. Zoom decided last night to forcibly enable requiring passwords for all meetings. Yay greater security. Boo that they didn't really notify anyone and did it over the weekend. I caught a report on it this morning and was able to email all my classes the password...but how many will actually read it?
And today's the day I'm supposed to be observed by a teacher from one of the schools I've interviewed with (sort of an "authentic teaching experience"). We'll see how that goes. Fun fun fun.

That's a good idea but the drawback is that you have to drink two bottles of whisky in 2-3 weeks (between deliveries). Oh wait. Let me start again: that's a great idea, I can't see any drawback.
My local supermarket has been able to provide me with slots no more than 2-3 days away, sometimes even from one day to the next (I do my shopping in the afternoon so too late for same day even in normal times, I've never checked in the morning if I could get slots for the evening, maybe...?). So I can do a normal shopping list and get it without too much delay. Although the other day there were tons of slots available for the next day so I thought to myself "that's OK, I'll wait until tomorrow (and pick a slot the day after) in case I forget something", and the next day I couldn't pick a slot before 3 days later, so it seems like slots are made available by batches, not continuously as I thought.
The supermarket is also somehow able to manage stocks even when ordering for 4-5 days ahead, since I can add some (short shelf life) items and get them delivered, while if I redo an order the day before (or actually go into the supermarket, like I did once) some of those items may not be available anymore. There must be some interesting logistics going on behind the scene, but overall it seems to work fairly well.
There are a few shortages, but nothing truly systematic: things that are missing in one part of the country are in good supply elsewhere. (Stores are applying some restrictions to how many items of popular products you can get at a time, which stops most of the crazy hoarding.)
I don't think we really have any significant shortage (yet?). At worst I've got less choice than usual (e.g. a single brand available instead of 42), but most items that might be missing in one shop are available for the next, or they might be available in another supermarket, so I guess it's more short stocks than truly shortage.
Though when shopping online many items seem to have a restriction in place. But I haven't seen any when I physically went into the shop, and I did pick many of items that were pretty low on stock (and that I hadn't been able to order online), and nobody said anything.

Supermarkets around here have signs in some sections of the store requesting that you limit your purchase to a single item (Walmart) or a specified small number (HEB) of a given product. I don't know how strictly they enforce the limit, or whether it's entirely voluntary, but it's not very practical when their stock is so low that the only orange juice they have is individual single-serving bottles. Yeah, 125 ml (or whatever it is) is going to last me a week.
I don't think we really have any significant shortage (yet?). At worst I've got less choice than usual (e.g. a single brand available instead of 42),
The worst shortages I've noticed have been paper towels and toilet paper, with only the worthless, almost unusable store brand available, and frozen vegetables, with almost no selection of any brand (but if you want frozen collard greens, ).

I've seen managers going and telling people that they can't purchase more than <limit> of certain items and removing said duplicates from shopping carts. So I'm pretty sure it's enforced. At least at my local Walmarts.

@dcon He's such an annoying character. Disney ruined the 5th season of Avengers Assemble by focusing entirely on him. 23 episodes of that asshole going "I am king so I don't have to explain anything to anybody" and having his ass handed to him and learning absolutely nothing from it.

I've seen managers going and telling people that they can't purchase more than <limit> of certain items and removing said duplicates from shopping carts. So I'm pretty sure it's enforced. At least at my local Walmarts.
Yesterday as I went to collect my order I decided to also go into the supermarket to see if they had some of the items that were missing when I ordered (4-5 days ago). It's nice to be able to shop in an almost empty supermarket. They had all of my missing items, so that's good.
As I said before, I suspect it's not so much an issue of getting stuff than of getting enough stuff to keep their usual stocks, so a lot of items are probably missing just for a day or so until they get the next delivery. For a couple there was a (very) reduced choice, but there still was some (and you know what, in a sense it's refreshing to be able to buy some stuff without having to spend half an hour in each aisle comparing the 42 different varieties of a basic item!). The only exception is flour which is still totally missing. I still don't know what people are doing that uses so much of it, bakeries are still open, so...?
There was however a restriction to "max 5 items of the same", which was new (to me). It was very poorly indicated in the aisles (I saw only one sign in one aisle, and I thought it applied to that aisle only) so I took my usual stock of 8 cans of green beans (for my dog). The cashier (very nicely) told me the rule and removed some cans -- although whether by mistake or because they didn't want to remove too much of my stock, they left me 6 instead of 5, so it's clearly enforced but not very stringently.
-
Status: just got an email from HR, we're all asked (well, requested (*), really, but they're "asking nicely") to take 5 days of holidays this month. Can't say I didn't see that coming...
(*) part of the emergency laws voted for the current crisis allow employers to do that -- in normal times an employer can set some days but... oh well, let's just say that "it's complicated"!
-
@remi We have a process for that, and it involves my employer giving me paid time off that doesn't come out of my holiday entitlement. Which is nice. (This is how they handle national holidays and the time between Christmas and New Year, when only essential staff are allowed on-site.)
I've got some of that coming up, from Thursday through including the following Tuesday.
