Curious, why is this a good idea again?
To be a good idea again, it would have had to have been one at some time in the past. It is not altogether clear that this is true, much less why it is/was a good idea.
-
I was more being facetious implying that someone had, at one time, found it to be a good idea. Much like saying "you're welcome" after doing something nice for someone and not getting a thank-you.
-
implying that someone had, at one time, found it to be a good idea.
Since @Eldelshell posted it here, it can reasonably be assumed that he/she/it/they found it to be a good idea. Why is known only to him/her/it/them.
-
Either that or it was intended for the bad/evil/quixotic ideas thread and Discoposting made it appear here.
-
Good point, although it doesn't really seem to fit those topics, either.

The intent was there, that's just a matter of semantics that's easily figured out. E.g. when you actually try to do that.

Using Go
No, this is the good ideas thread; the bad ideas thread is :arrows_pointing_random_directions.png:.
-
The guy at work keeps suggesting I learn Go?
-
Based on your rants, I would suggest that going elsewhere would be a good idea.
-
Leaving now would be a bit of a dick move, though. Good for me, not so much for everyone else.

That's generally the case when things where you work are so bad you're considering leaving. You just have to do what's best for you and let them deal with the consequences.
-
I've thought about it - and if you've seen the thread in the Lounge you'll understand how 'interesting' things are. But they're never going to be able to fix this by themselves and honestly if I left now, I'm pretty certain ISO wouldn't be a thing, which would have a huge detrimental effect, several major customers would up and leave pretty much immediately, which would be somewhere between disaster and apocalypse.
At least they have a fighting chance of making it through right now.

Will your saving their bacon produce any long-term improvement in the corporate stupidity? If not, I would suggest that they don't deserve to have their bacon saved. Fail fast or fail later; they're going to fail eventually.
Will it add marketable skills to your resume? If not, there is no benefit to you, either.
If the answer to either question is yes, stay. If not, move on.

I realize that, but...bacon!
-
Maybe it will, maybe it won't. But I have sufficient conscience that I have to let them try, I can't just pull the rug from under them and go "ha, sucks to be you, now deal with this".
They are still destined to fail at some point, I think, but at least I can make it so it is less of a train wreck and more of a choice.
It is helping the resume too.
-

Adding skills to the resume isn't the only thing: adding money to the bank is a good thing as well. ;)
-
Well, yes, of course. (I'm painfully aware of the lack of this in my current situation.) However, I was basing that statement on @Arantor's assertion (in the other thread?) that it would not be difficult for him to find another job, and assuming that assertion to be true. It is, of course, generally a good idea to secure a new source of income before abandoning the existing one.
-
Generally it wouldn't, PHP devs are frequently in demand, plus I have a decent experience history and Zend certification... Yeah, that wouldn't be especially awkward. Right now is just a matter of timing.

Good idea: Modding your sound files
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lk7RYlqdKLo&feature=youtu.be
-
I remember hearing something about someone who replaced every sound file in Half-Life 2 with their voice.
-
Good idea: This Discourse feature:
-
That's been there ages - little seen here because we (currently) don't get a lot of Spam™.
-
Just goes to show how rare good discoideas are then, eh?
-
That struck a memory for me too, and I remembered seeing it and thinking it was silly. So I tried to find it:

Once I heard about a thing that happened and it was really cool and I heard about it.
So I tried to find it:
WAIT AN ACTUAL LINK!? OMG! You are promoted to the new Ben L.

You are promoted to the new Ben L.
Does that mean I have to start playing Dwarf Fortress? Can I post screenshots of Portal instead?

That would be an improvement.

There's one in every group …

That's not a screenshot though.

Oh yeah! You posting that reminded me that I half remembered, half figured out that you could probably do this in that chamber when I was thinking about Portal in the aftermath of posting that, and I wanted to make sure:
(Note that the door is open. :-) Which counts as a Good Idea on the part of Valve.)
Addition: ooo, wait, you can do even better: both doors open, no cubes on any button:
-
A lot of the chambers have built-in failsafes with voice lines for when you put a cube behind the door it opens or whatever.
-
I know. :-) In fact, I just went through the non-escape portion to try to find as many as I could. I know of five or six chambers where you would be able to get stuck if it weren't for the failsafe, including a couple that I didn't know about before. I also know of one where the failsafe condition is inadequate, and one or two more (including chamber 0) that I suspect it is technically feasible to get "stuck" in except I'm not good enough at cube throwing to actually do it.
/me checks youtube. Hah, I'm right. And there's no failsafe for it.

cube throwing
♥And good guy schrobotindisguise linking to the tutorial on how to do the cube video transitions.

Why is liking quiche considered unmanly?
It is?
Quiche is pie!
Quiche is an egg tart.
I like tarts.
-
It is?
I think it's a British thing.
I remember a Red Dwarf joke when Rimmer became all metrosexual and suddenly started liking quiche and made a "Give Quiche A Chance" t-shirt.

That marks him as someone who is not a Real Programmer.
-
Ah hah, I found this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Men_Don't_Eat_Quiche
So it seems to be all about insecurity.
Quiche is full of eggs which are delicious and awesome protein. Plus sometimes bacon or fried mushrooms and other yummy stuff. Real men should eat quiche if they want to grow up to be big and strong.
