😈 The Evil Ideas thread

A bot that crawls forums and posts controversial political opinions to derail threads. Should be able to identify the general ideology of the forum before posting. Bonus points if it can respond to (some of) its replies to stir up more discussion.
Some of us think that is better done manually.

pretty sure that's what boomzilla IS.

Unless you're planning on using a corpus of pre-canned flamebait with triggers by keywords (which would rapidly become boring, like Eliza's kid brother) that's going to be really hard.
-
that's going to be really hard.
I'm not too sure about that. The Complaint Generator was pretty good and that's more'n 20 years old already.

Brillant! We should print it out and put it on a wooden table! Also, TRWTF is PHP.

I read that as mourning coffee and wondered what had died to make the coffee so upset. Perhaps I too need more caffeine.

That's just your inner fascist showing itself.

I read that as mourning coffee
I, on the other hand, read it as "unplanned interrupt in the funny morning coffee".

Honestly, I'm the victim here. Getting trolled by you people and your horrible posts.

or just <a>some text</a> because Discourse tends to remove href="#" anyway.

Here's a clue: check the raw markdown of their posts. Look at the url and replace the /t/topic-name with /raw and you'll see exactly what's there.
-
The result will surely be disappointing.
-
Ah, I see they're also hand-entering "---" to create an hr.
I thought there might be some specific markdown for it I was missing.

I see they're also hand-entering "---" to create an hr.
Beware, there are gotchas surrounding hr's. Something about things turning into h1's if they follow an hr, or something like that. I don't remember exactly, because I don't do that.

Nature may abhor a vacuum, but markdown loves it some newlines.

On the other hand, if you use <hr>,[]()
markup for links stops working.

Filed under: [Discoursistency](#tag)Does this work better?
For clarification: the<hr>
in the quote miraculously works, the<hr/>
in my post works, too.

Yes, that makes even less sense.

I'm beginning to suspect the Markdown parser was written by pointing MarkovBot at StackOverflow and Github.

I'm going to create a poll for people to discuss the merits of UpdatePanel versus non-.NET AJAX-y stuff.

There's JavaScript.NET now?
or Asynchronous JavaScript and XMLHttpRequests.NET?
-
There's JavaScript.NET now?
I think WinJS probably fits that description. It started off being for WinRT HTML apps, but has recently gained cross-platform browser support. Apparently the next move is using it with Cordova for crossplatform (ie. iOS, Android and Blackberry in addition to Windows) app dev.
-
Sure, why not.

Oh god, I literally just invented a new form of terrorism.
TVs are controlled by infrared signals right? With no authentication, you just need line of sight with the room it's in (a sufficiently strong light will reflect and scatter in the wall and be detected by the receiver).
So in a big city, if you can find the right spot, you could turn on or off thousands of TVs remotely with a powerful IR laser. You could turn them on and turn up the volume to the maximum!
-
In elementary school, there was a kid in my class who had a universal TV remote built into his wristwatch. He used to turn on classroom TVs as he walked by during restroom breaks. Nobody had any idea what was going on!
-
If you could pull that off logistically, I'd worry about a lot more than my TV (that I don't have) switching on: use your imagination, Grasshopper.

You also need the correct codes. Each device with an IR receiver uses different codes to mean different things. Each manufacturer has a few different sets of codes they use, and then they decide which set of codes to use on each model. This is why your DVD/Blu-Ray player doesn't turn on when you use your TV's dedicated remote, and vice-versa.
This also means your plan wouldn't work. Not only could you not turn on every TV, but you couldn't even turn on every Sony (for example) TV.
If you could pull that off logistically, I'd worry about a lot more than my TV (that I don't have) switching on: use your imagination, Grasshopper.
Not feasible, for the same reasons I outlined above.
Also, I suspect that if the IR signal was too strong, even with the right codes, you might burn out the receiver instead of triggering a response from the target devices.

Me and my sister often messed with each others' steroes.
Funny enough, they were >10 year apart in age and by two different companies (Grundig and Philips). But the remotes worked with both of them.

In 1972, Grundig GmbH became Grundig AG. After this Philips began to gradually accumulate shares in the company over the years, and assumed complete economic control in 1993. Philips sold Grundig to a Bavarian consortium in 1998 owing to unsatisfactory performance.1
I'm guessing that the Grundig radio was purchased during the period when Philips had a controlling stake. There goes your coincidence.

After a complaint about running out of likes in that topic, I had an evil idea, and just had to share.
What if when you try to like a post, Discourse asked you:
You only have X of Y likes remaining for the next Z {discotime unit}. Are you sure you want to like this post?
Yes No
