🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD

I still remember my time on the Warsow forum, where people would always complain about performance issues with 999fps on 640x480 with all the options off. The suggestion was always 'seta cg_placebo 1'.

it is never called anything other than aspirin in the US.
Not only that, but--and I admit this is minor--in the US we would call it acetylsalicylic acid. Don't know why Germany uses a slightly different spelling, although I imagine it's similar to how acetominophen is called paracetamol in the UK.
If we're getting that pedantic, then the proper name for the stuff is 2-Acetoxybenzoic acid.
-
At my last job, users who complained to the data center about performance were told to type in
GO FAST
(this was on a mainframe). That really was a command, which did nothing but record the user IDs of everyone who fell for it.

Basically, yes. Calling it homoerotic isn't really an outright lie, as it is prepared in a homoerotic way to take advantage of the legal loophole, but it is only minimally diluted.
whaaaaa?

never been verified in clinical trials
Not entirely true. There have been clinical trials, and some have indeed shown beneficial effects. However, the trials have not been large enough or sufficiently well-controlled to be conclusive.
you lose your sense of taste for a few weeks
After further reading, the problem seems to be with nasal sprays, some of which can cause loss of smell (which is intimately connected with taste), not with oral medications, which just taste bad (in some cases — zinc acetate has a longer shelf life than zinc gluconate due to zinc gluconate developing a bad taste rather quickly; it's also claimed to be more effective).

OK, so it's been verified, just not conclusively verified. Silly me.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspirin lists that as a synonym along with a couple of other things. It lists the IUPAC name as "2-(acetoxy)benzoic acid" if you want to get that pendantic.
-

"shown some beneficial effects" == anecdata != verified.
HTH. HAND. YMM(OMN[1])V.
[1] in this case it probably shouldn't, unless you like to make up your own definition for words, à la @blakeyrat's abnormal definition of the word "bug".

Supposedly, sucking zinc lozenges will also reduce the severity or duration of a cold, but there's the problem that you lose your sense of taste for a few weeks.
They're homeopathic according to the label on a bottle on my desk from my last cold. Therefore, they couldn't possibly work and any symptom relief you may have experienced is strictly a figment of your imagination.
Mine don't say anything about homeopathic anything. Each lozenge contains 23mg of zinc gluconate which is identified as 153% of the US RDA (along with 100mg of ascorbic acid and 20mg of Echinacea purpurea). Directions say to take one lozenge every two hours up to six per day and not to take them for more than seven days.
It's my understanding that zinc, among nutrients, has a particularly narrow range between the recommended amount and the amount that begins to show toxic effects. One source warns of both diarrhea and vomiting at the high end, which sounds like the body trying very hard to get rid of something.
Clearly there are both "real" zinc lozenges and "quack" zinc lozenges on the market, side by side.
Shall we next discuss the homeopathic silver nitrate ("argentum nitricum" in terms of the label) nasal spray that was the only decongestant I could find at Sprouts?

Among chemists, the IUPAC name is the proper name. And the brackets are optional according to IUPAC naming rules, by the way. The acetoxy prefix as the denotation for the ester of acetic acid is a whole functional group on its own, the brackets are thusly superfluos. There simply is no "oxybenzoic acid".
-
Among chemists, the IUPAC name is the proper name.
Though it gets unwieldy fast once you start dealing with the wilder parts of metabolomics.
-
superfluos
You expect me to take you seriously when you can't even spell "superfluous" correctly? YMBNH.
-
Well, I also wouldn't want to name even the simpler peptides according to IUPAC. :)

Maybe he's talking about making his teeth extra clean.
You know. Super-flossing!

The monomers aren't too bad. :D But the polymers…
-
Let's just agree that pretty much anything organic above 1,000 u is guaranteed to become unwieldy fast. ;)
Not to mention that those bicyclic compounds also tend to confuse me. The bastards.
-
Need moar dickweedery!

It's the ones with the bonus C7 rings that really start to confuse me. The chemistry of the more complex terpenes really does my head in.

Is now a good time to introduce medical stones with holes in them into the debate?

If your idea of "medical" is oriented along these lines?

Bad idea: I wanted to see what prices are like for shipping large things, so I googled "big packages" .

This is probably not actually a bad idea as it lets Nat Geo reach more people for their educational stuff. But their brand when they get 27% seems a little off even though they are getting a big payment for it.

Bad idea: sites that redirect

when they detect you're on mobile.Bonus points if said main page also shills for the app in a full-screen ad.

You sure that's not an evil idea?

I can actually top this one, and point out how stupid I can be at times:
If you want the website for Kohl's, you can safely enter kohls.com and get what you need. Same for most of the major retailers.
You cannot do that with Dick's Sporting Goods...or at least you cannot leave off the "sporting goods" part of it. dicks.com did not help me find fishing gear, but it did bombard me with more poles than I had wanted to see.
The answer is "none". I did not want to see any of those poles.

Bad Idea: Making a YouTube video asking if capitalism is dying, then citing all capitalist businesses to illustrate your point:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE3t77AMITU
In the video, purporting that capitalism is on the decline they cite: Uber, Facebook, Reddit, Airbnb, Twitter, etc. Every single one of these are capitalist businesses.
She also cites how jobs are moving away from "repetitive manual labor". Riiiiiight, we just capitalistically outsourced a lot of that repetitive manual labor over to China. Just like a capitalist would do.

Bad idea: abbreviate "Sales and Marketing" as "S&M"

These people are confused. I went to their youtube page to see who was putting out this nonsense. Here's how they describe themselves:
TestTube's new daily show is committed to answering the smart, inquisitive questions people have about life, society, politics and anything else happening in the news. It's a place where curiosity rules and together we'll get a clearer understanding of this crazy world we live in.
Sounds like Vox for Youtube. Yep, BAD IDEA.

I like Mythbusters, but you have to realize that they are anything but scientific. They are entertaining though.
But, I have to say, letting Kari Byron go was a mistake on their part...
Yes please.
