🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD

Nah, I should be fine as long as I don't drink anything that's been near a radio wave. I don't drink my TV, silly!
-
CMYK pronounced with Lojban sounds is "shmuck".
-
Ah! The "radiation" people! I have dealings with those daily. They blame everything from mobile phones to TV remotes (yes, really!) for every illness ever.
My go-to response is asking them why they don't live in a cave. After all, light is an electromagnetic wave. The fucking Sun is trying to kill us! Also, Illuminati, see? Illuminate! They use light to keep us in check so we can't achieve immortality!
At that point they mostly don't bother even mentioning it again. No, I don't care if it's because they think I'm crazy,

Too late since without getting into real pedantic dickweedery radio waves and TV waves aren't really all that much different...
-

That's crazy talk. One does sounds and pictures and the other one only does sounds.
-
And both on the EM spectrum at different frequencies. It's like fucking magic.

Good idea: reducing the amount of plastic necessary to produce your water bottles.
Bad idea: making the bottles so flimsy they have less resistance to twisting than the plastic holding the cap closed.
-
Man, I only ever had a ZX. :(
My first computer. Still gets me tingly occasionally because it were a simpler time then. 64K? Luxury. We only had 42K of usable RAM and we were grateful!

Almost good enough for the Error'd
-
Leaving an anonymous gift on people's doorsteps that is actually vaguely threatening (dolls that look like a kid living in the home).

That image was 7 minutes old when you posted it! I'm on to you!

I had to post on meta first!
https://meta.discourse.org/t/10k-posts-breaks-the-progress-bar/18063
Do we count that as good or bad idea?

Hmmm, If we hurry and summon Sam to that topic, we can avert the bad. If we just wait for Jeff, then definitely BAD.

They don't live in caves because, you know, radon gas.

+1 etc.

Key duplicators that use an image and mail the key to you; thus it doesn't take any skill to get a dupe of other's keys.

I'm tempted to join in on the fun over there, but not that tempted.

Wow, people are actually suggesting that at a certain length topics should be auto-closed and we'd have to start a new topic. Which in a round-about way, that's just a WTF method of forum pagination.

forum termination, is more like it

Bad idea: allowing users to like comments outside of the likes thread since all of the likes will be used up in the likes thread so that users can't like comments outside of the likes thread.

comedies of the BBC
I'm partial to Are You Being Served, Vicar of Dibley, Absolutely Fabulous, All Creatures Great and Small, Cadfael, Yes (Prime) Minister. Among many other shows (well Cadfael, and ACG&S aren't comedies, but too bad)

Don't tell them about the bananas...

Apart from the minor detail that Cadfael was produced by ITV, not the BBC. And ACG&S... the Fifth Doctor in something that wasn't a minor part!
Filed under: how much more pedantry do I need to display?

Indeed, and I had a post elaborating on that. First posted to Likes:
http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/the-official-likes-thread/1000/10351
I cross-posted that as a reply to the guy who brought up the idea, but it was deleted on meta.
-
Furniture modeled after human flesh. SFW, but disturbing.
-
Even with all the other trolling, I think that was the post that broke the camel's back TBH.
Also, look, this topic is approaching the first so-called :edge case" of 1k posts... surely no one would do that in a topic that's not specifically designed for it? Right?
-
I still find it funny that if we'd been shown a little more respect by Jeff, we wouldn't have tried nearly as hard to troll.
-
I'm pretty sure I was trolled by the guy who brought it up in the first place. If I posted that with a non-Burns avatar and a different user name, would it have been deleted? Doubtful. Maybe I should have left off the last bit about coming up with a name. It might have been a bit too much snark. At least the original lives in the Likes thread.
-
That depends on whether he figured you were the same person as here. I thought, quite frankly, that my post which was moderated was quite tame (repro'd in the likes thread)
If Jeff and co get bent out of shape by my commentary, they're amateurs compared to the hell I dish out to SMF. And they listen. They don't always agree but at least they listen.
-
I honestly don't understand the fuck they flagged you for? I managed to read the posts before they got purged (may still be available, don't think it has been 24h). Yes, it was a bit rough, you may have sounded a bit irritated (which I guess you were), but if their bounds of civilized discourse can't take that well, fuck it, it really is a religion then.
Do not question the dogma!
-
Did any of yours get fully deleted? I saw one that was definitely flagged, and I had to click to get the content. I didn't understand why it was flagged.
-
Officially someone from the community marked it as off topic, but it was only hidden rather than outright deleted last I looked, but honestly dealing with the BS makes me not want to go back there. I successfully avoided meta.d from February 2013 until this month.
-
And that reminds me, I was dealing with Jeff-like retardedness back then too but not Jeff himself.
-
I think it's good to maintain a presence there. I doubt I'll be a regular.
Ultimately, I don't think the issue is super high priority, but it's another example of a bizarre set of priorities. If they'd said, "Yeah, we should figure out a better way, but there are more important things right now and we'll get to it later, maybe post 1.0," I could accept that. And @sam kinda did just that.
But no, it has to be rationalized away. And @codinghorror kept moving the goal posts. "Find me some bit posts." "But different ones than what has been pointed out."
-
Sam's all right, IMHO. When he disagrees he's civil about it and has good suggestions, and even if we all disagree I think everyone can understand his point. I feel like him being cautious with agreeing with us is mostly due to not wanting his work environment getting hostile. Which I can respect.
-
As I said to Jeff when I ragequit here earlier this month, I have enough WTFery in my life without him compounding it.
I understand the whole push for 1.0 thing, I get that, and I'd have been fine with them pushing it back to post 1.0 if they (well, Jeff) hadn't been an ass-hat about it. We see it as a legitimate issue - and I admitted that there was a finite limit to it, as 5 digits is probably the limit with 6 digits being an edge case ("5 digits should be enough for anyone"?)
I don't get what the problem is with just making it bigger.
My biggest concern though is that they're generally so blinded by how they seem to think forums work that real world use just does not match up. We all have horror stories of shit co-opted to jobs for which it was never even remotely designed. Discourse will be no different in hindsight.
-

Indeed. At least for non-mobile. I never use mobile, so I couldn't comment on that. There was actually some constructive stuff going on with the guy suggesting going to the fuzzy display, e.g., 10.5K like on the categories list.
-
There are many solutions actually. For example, you know how in some mobile browsers they show the URL bar when you scroll down? You could make the progressbar be 100% width and just show it when you scroll down, leave it on the screen for a second or two, then hide it before you can read down to the point where it's in the way.
But we never even got far enough for suggestions, so I didn't write it.

Trying to burn through the remainder of 5000 likes when you've already burned through the entire Likes topic and the status topic and are wondering what to spamlike next.

My stepdad once tried to extol the virtues to me of using EDLIN as a text editor on DOS because - and I quote - "it'll always be around".
I haven't seen EDLIN in nearly twenty years and it don't seem a day too soon.
-
New bad idea: posting here about my confessions rather than posting on CodingConfessional because I feel happier about fessing my sins in front of people that will mock me but whose opinions I have some respect for.
-
The funny thing is vi was written like 10 years before edlin.
-

yes - and my nested quote that followed it up was just a bomb planted in the camel's pack.
Also, look, this topic is approaching the first so-called :edge case" of 1k posts... surely no one would do that in a topic that's not specifically designed for it? Right?
I've seen so many 1k+ post topics on so many forums - only a person with limited forum experience would ever think that doesn't happen. Though usually it's because there are like 500 members on the forum and 1 topic applies to all of them... that's 1k posts even if everyone only posts twice.
-
Of course, Jeff flat out stating that he doesn't use the competition is part of the problem here, because he flat out believes he's doing better - except he has no idea what's really going on because he doesn't use forums.
-

It also happens a lot in threads like this, where the topic is fairly broad and solicits a long running posting of suggestions/happenings.

You mean like how we're only ~50 posts from 1k?
