βπ THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
-
man i must have posted something extraordinary to be recognized for so little. which is a bad sign, that usually means it was some awful shit.
-
I dunno, I just remember a lot of stuff. Like, I unintentionally memorize people's license plates as a means of recognizing them around town.

He doesn't think about anything jeff-related it seems. As in, he seems to not care at all.

WHOA IT'S MORBS
Time for random off topic posts.

Curse his handsome, shifty, Mediterranean eyes!

Guess what, posting that revealed a bug:
2 = 3

You're just adding stuff to the powers of 2. Sometimes. I'm too lazy to discover why.

I don't know what to say..
Ben, pretending to be autistic doesn't make you autistic, although it does make you something.
-
Self-delusional?
-
I don't know what to say..
@morbiuswilters, pretending to be a doctor that can telepathically cure me of autism doesn't make you a doctor that can telepathically cure me of autism, although it does make you something.
-
-
Bro, you aren't autistic. You're just shy and bad at interacting with people and you're using autism as an excuse not to overcome that.
-
Another bug: The top reply is the post itself which does not contain any quotes and is a reply to morbs and not to itself.
-
Summary: Messing with quotes is a bad idea.
-
Hey, I didn't self-diagnose. I'm not one of those crazy people. If you want to discuss this with my doctor, that might violate some privacy law or something.

Doctors will tell you a lot bullshit simply meant to make you into a patient. Yeah, sure, you may have some problems/differences. Guess what? Everybody does. The problem is going into the mental health system and getting a diagnosis is the perfect way to avoid any responsibility for improving your life.
"Oh, I spend my precious life posing kind of annoying, irrelevant riddles on the Internet that nobody cares about? Well, I'm autistic, so it's okay. It's not like I can talk to that cute girl/boy/robot that I find myself drawn to.."
I'm not trying to be a dick, but I've spent a lot of time around people in the mental health system. I've spent a lot of time trying to "fix" things myself. I'm going to save you some time: it's mostly crap. You have one life and if you spend it trying to classify, rationalize and distance yourself from your fears, then you likely will never figure things out. At least not until you've wasted a lot of time.
You're a smart guy. You can force yourself to do things that challenge your comfort zone, but it's hard. It's easier to accept the diagnosis and change nothing.
It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you think of yourself as autistic, then all you will do is spend time playing with computers, instead of challenging yourself.
At the same time, I realize that hearing this probably won't do anything. Sometimes you just have to learn through hard experience.

If you want to know @darkmatter better, there's this topic.

Hey, wasn't @HardwareGeek supposed to report back on his chocolate tasting?
Don't you mean @ChocolateGeek?
-
Or the following weekend.
That's some serious procrastination skills if you can put off eating chocolate!
Do you also put off drinking beer? ;-)

It's funny, the doctor I spoke to this morning pronounced it like that too.
-
Oooh, speaking of doctors and getting back on topic: My doctor bumped me up to a better painkiller starting today :D
-
Hope the painkillers do what you need them to.
As for me, I've been referred onwards to someone who can make a proper diagnosis about Asperger's, since I definitely present on the spectrum but reading this thread makes me think this is the right thread for it!
-
getting back on topic: My doctor bumped me up to a better painkiller starting today
Are you saying that this was a Bad Ideaβ’?
-
For productivity, probably :D I'm not at percoset/vicodin-level yet, but I remember after my wisdom teeth came out.... that was a fun week and a half off work :)

I'm doing required pre-work for a required training course in "Emotional Intelligence".
The pre-work involves reading articles about EI. One of them includes the following caveat: "It's important to emphasize that building one's emotional intelligence cannot -- will not -- happen without sincere desire and concerted effort. A brief seminar won't help."
Great, so can I skip the two-day seminar then? >.>
-

So... just like religious faith, then?
Filed under: what IS Emotional Intelligence anyway?

Filed under: what IS Emotional Intelligence anyway?
Apparently, understanding your own emotions and the emotions of other people. Which is apparently crucial for leadership or some crap.
I love how we're expected to spend 2 days within our first year doing this EI seminar, and hours upon hours learning about the sales department's responsibilities, but there is 0 IT training on how any of our systems work. Peachy.
-
is apparently crucial for leadership or some crap.
Ah, ok, it's all coming back now...
-
This whole training program is just stupid for IT people. The odds that I'll ever walk into a client site or speak to a client on the phone are vanishingly small, but I have to learn all about how we target our sales pitches at clients. We don't have any training courses on how to get software requirements out of business users, or how to design effective solutions, or how to interact with clients, or what makes a good bug report, but we have all kinds of cheesy videos about understanding our clients and how to teach them to upsell more of the products that they're reselling from us.
-
I'm afraid it's the ol' "if you ain't sellin', yer a cost centre" - which is pretty dumb in any case. Worse, since instead of learning to do the job you'll be doing, you're learning to do a job you won't be doing - if I understand correctly.
-
We're using an interesting model in which we capitalize our new software projects and major enhancements so we're actually building capital instead of being a cost center... which doesn't work well for us because bugfixing is therefore penalized since it's not capitalizable.
-
Okay, that's an interesting approach. I wonder what that looks like on the books...

Adding to this list, we found out how to like a post multiple times by simply spamming the like button, leading to double and triple likes, and in one case -5 likes.
Then we wondered what else breaks if you spam the UI, and someone figured out you could hold down the Enter key on the "Forgot Password" page and spam thousands of password reset emails to anyone just by knowing their username.

I thought that happened before the like spamming.

Perhaps. They were in close proximity though.

Soo... how's business dr. Bort? Any patients still alive?

I wouldn't be a very good psychiatrist if there were, would I?

DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE GO TO HELL AND GET SODOMIZED BY DEMONS!!!
If only this post was over a meta.d.

With a Burns avatar. Needs maniacal laughter.
Perhaps a British accent because, you know, all the bad guys in movies are British.

all these dumb idiots are new, there's nobody here from the old forums, so you have to repeat all the same fucking threads all over again.
-
that said, the SQL permissions thread seems ot be running itself with only a little priming from me, so there's that.
-
Just think of it as whole new generations of people who can fail to be impressed at your genius.
-
there's nobody here from the old forums
Nobody except you, morbius (right now), boomzilla, drjones, me (even if i posted about 1x a month over a 6 year period on CS), mott, pjh, and I'm missing quite a few more.
Sure a lot of people left like lorne_kates, but it's more that there are so many new people from the front page comments now linking into the forum and encouraging new people to come in.

He forgets that the population of active CS posters changed over time, too. Accurate memories are a barrier to incoherent rage.
